NBA 2K10 Review

I was given a copy of NBA 2K10 by Isaac (sorry for the delay Isaac) and he asked that I write a review so here it is.

NBA 2K10 Cover

I have had NBA 2K10 for a month or so now on Xbox 360 and have had a fair amount of game time to write this review. I'll just start by saying that I really like my basketball games to be as realistic as possible, and that I have been playing NBA Live and the 2K series since 2003 for 2K and well before that for the Live series.

The first noticeable difference I found was the way the IsoMotion works. In previous versions you could sprint down the court and use the IsoMotion to blow by a defender without breaking stride, this year however I have found that you need to release sprint in order to perform the IsoMotion well. This severely inhibits your ability to run fast breaks and allows the CPU to stop you.

The new IsoMotion has it's upsides though, it allows you to determine down to the finest details what you want to do with the ball, you can do things like determine which way and where a crossover is going to finish and even which leg you want to jump of for a hop step. It is extremely intricate and takes a bit of working out with very little on screen help it just requires a lot of practice, however once you can master it - boy does it help!

There has been a big improvement in the way help defence occurs, however it can also be a hindrance. I have found that the help defenders come significantly more than in previous versions but if you are using a Artest type defender in the post and don't require help it still comes and can cause you too give up a significant amount of 3-point shots (which they seem to always hit).

Graphics wise it is pretty good but I do think that Live 10 just beats it on this front, there is still a lack of crispness in the models in my opinion but overall the graphics and gameplay are fluent and quite well done.

The new and the mode that really keeps the game interesting is the My Player mode. It starts with you creating a player (height, position etc) and you are then thrown into Summer Camp with a team, which is where you begin your career. Your career path depends on your performance in the Summer League - from where you are either end up on an NBA roster or in the D-League. Everything you do in My Player mode games you are scored on, whether it be shot selection, getting beaten off the dribble, successfully double-teaming an opponent, EVERYTHING! This can be a bit frustrating as it seemed like every missed shot was bad shot selection even on wide open looks. It is a fairly addictive mode with the I NEED to make the NBA mindset kicking in.

Overall NBA 2K10 is an improvement over 2K9 and if you are after a realistic style NBA game then 2K10 is for you. While there are still areas for improvement as with any game, I think it is definitely worth purchasing.

Easy to say when it was given to you lol ; )

Jokes aside, agree with your write up there Bizzy, now it makes sense the lack of posts lately, the My Player mode. Have you made NBA yet?

Love the updated rosters every time a trade in real life is made, and also like the fact if a player in real life is in a slump eg Salmons, it is reflected in the game as well.

Also the NBA today feature is cool where you can play games that were actually played that day.

Great game IMO.

Hey just curious, am i missing something, or in MY PLAYER mode can you only play 5 minute quarters?? Is there a way you can change it to 12 minute qtrs?? Any help would be cool thanx.

Speed44, I don't have the game at hand but, from memory, you can change the mins per qtr in the presentation menu of the my player mode. You will need to make sure the game is updated to the most recent version though... should update automatically if you have the Xbox connected to the internet.

So if it's not the most recent version (I don't have internet access to my Xbox), I can't do it? Just checked, and there is no "minutes per qtr" switch in the Presentation menu?

There do seem to be a few glitches in the game in My Player mode. I made the NBA, but got sent back to the D-League and then after dominating the D-League (averaging a triple double) for a season and a half still got no call up, I went online and found many people have had the same thing happen. One guy was in his third D-League season and Averaging 40 points, 20 boards, 15 assists and 8 steals and still not getting called up.

I restarted a new career and have since remade the NBA and just got a triple double in my 10th game. The insider tells me after every game that I have some important desicions to make about these teams that are interested in me, but no where can I see who it is or how I make my 'important desicion'.

Other than than, I'm really enjoying it.

Agree on the help defence. Literally every time I've had a "Smart Double Team" rating the offense has kicked it out straight away and they've scored.

Worst thing for me is that I'm rated 95 for threes but am shooting at about 20% from there. It seems I'm getting good looks and they just don't drop. Another frustrating thing is when my big sets me a pick and instead of rolling all the way to the basket he just stops half-way and stands there even though his defender has left him for me. Shit I hate my teammates... but I'm being nit-picky.

It's a great game overall! Definitely beats Live for those deciding, I won't be going back.

Now to make the NBA...

Thanks for the review Bizzy and to 2K International. Always find that reviews that note flaws are more trustworthy and credible than the glowing "10/10!!" variety. Glad you're enjoying it.

Shooting is still based off of timing on the stick. You need to change your player's motion for shooting; chances are the one you're using has a release motion too fast for you.

Biggest negative in the game is the lack of minutes in My player mode. Hilariously after a few games into the season; Clark Kellogg starts complaining about how low the team is scoring. Typically the only things you rate in when they call up season stats is FT%, Team FG%, FG% and base stats like BPG and SPG.

Good idea being able to make your own guy but it would be nice to play 8-10 minute quarters.

My 7'3" Centre is lucky to average 10ppg and 8rpg a season despite the crazy skill stats he has.

Play lots, and use your drills, I just did the shooting drill over and over again. I not only did I get 400 skill points I also got 1 3pt shot skill added which in mine was worth 1500 points.

Skip you can turn that off I was getting the same thing and after a while you don't need it.

X, I have the same problem with 3's but it seems that when I get the ball kicked out to me I don't miss but if I try and create the shot myself (off screens) not as good.

Does anyone else get annoyed with the way there team plays? I am playing with Denver (start SF) and some games Carmelo, JR and Billups will just keep on jacking stupid 3's and then other games they will play a team game (so annoying).

But still love the game, when the get the bugs worked out will be fantastic.

One thing on your review Bizzy, is you say you like realistic bball games (me too) but then complain that you can't do an Iso move using turbo. how many players do you know can make a move like that going full speed. I think the slowing down makes it realistic.

Has anybody played the PC version? I nearly bought it in the recent Steam Christmas sale, but got scared off when I read a review which mentioned several glaring bugs. Given that, and that I've already got 2k9 on PC and got fed up with that one due to the control scheme being stuffed, it didn't seem worth it.

Not trying to hate on the game though - the console version is probably miles better, and it certainly does seem to have left NBA Live behind these days.

(This was the review.)

"Shooting is still based off of timing on the stick. You need to change your player's motion for shooting; chances are the one you're using has a release motion too fast for you." -Marty.

I changed my shooting animation a few times and think I've found the most effective one. In all the shooting drills and shootarounds it says "Perfect Release" 90% of the time so I don't think it's that.

I also turned the Insider off after getting tired of hearing about Steve Nash's tongue.

"X, I have the same problem with 3's but it seems that when I get the ball kicked out to me I don't miss but if I try and create the shot myself (off screens) not as good."

Yeah when you try to create a shot it involves the "Shot off dribble" rating as well so that may be your problem. Personally I'm as bad with the spot-ups as I am off the dribble :(

Can anyone give me an indication of how much the NBA teams take notice of stats and how much the care about the teammate rating? I got a bit annoyed yesterday with the amount of wide-open layups I was missing and not being able to switch direction anywhere near quick enough to stay with my man on D and decided to skip defence in the next game for a laugh. I mean, actually NOT play D, lol, I camped at my 3pt line and waited for the long outlet. Ended up racking up 54pts on 16-30 shooting from three and am starting to wonder if that type of performance consistently would get me in the L.

Anyway, things I'd change for the next game are:

Missed Layups: Either make it harder to GET to the rim or let the player get blocked. Players don't miss easy layups like that, reallistically when they get a shot that good it's either a foul or a score. So they should probably make it harder to get such an 'easy' shot.

R-Stick: I'd make this a specific layup/dunk button. I don't like my man pulling-up for a jumper on a fast break.

D: I think the speed at which the defensive player should be consistent. Depending on the animation the player is in he changes speed, it makes it really hard (for me anyway) to stay in front of my man and follow him on cuts.

Teammates on offense: They are actually the dumbest players in history! As I said the most frustrating thing is when I call a pick & roll and my big forgets the "roll" part even when his man is double-teamming me!

I'm a 5'10" Shooting Guard (3pt specialist) for those wondering, had to be realistic!

Lol Bizzy I know but I didn't think it'd be fair on the opposition to make it my real height of 6'8" ;)
