Rumour: Phill Jones to re-sign with Taipans

Rumour has it that Phill Jones has (or is about to) re-sign with the Cairns Taipans for the 2010/11 NBL season.

If this is true, he will be joining a small group of announced signings in Crosswhite, Grabau, Loughton and Rychart.

Obviously this is just a rumour until something official is released by the NBL.

Pretty sure you are right clarky, word was he agreed to terms a couple of weeks back. Kerry Williams will be added to that and Id believe either Trueman or Behrendorff.

That would leave import 1 and 3 and a backup swingman (possibly Boodnikoff again).

Official Release from NBL website

The Skytrans Cairns Taipans are hoping captain Phill Jones can be the x-factor for the club as it pushes for play-off action in the 2010-11 National Basketball League season.

The Skytrans Taipans are rapt to have re-signed the former Kiwi international sharp-shooter for another season.

He topped 20 points in five games and rarely scored below double-figures for the Skytrans Taipans this past season, averaging just under 12 points an outing shooting 44 per cent from the field and 37 per cent from beyond the three-point arc.

Jones has had a storied basketball career. He was the second leading scorer at the 2004 Olympic Games, played in two FIBA World Championships and was one of New Zealand's leading players on the international scene for many years. He was named the NBLs Best Sixth Man in 2008/09 and his value coming off the bench was evident again this past season for the Skytrans Taipans.

Jones is currently averaging 20 points, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game for the Nelson Giants who sit in third place on the New Zealand NBL ladder.

Taipans coach Aaron Fearne said Jones was the ultimate team man who was determined to help lead the club back into play-off action.

"Phill brings that veteran leadership to our group which is something we definitely need," Fearne said.

“Guys look to him and he proved last year on a number of occasions that he is capable of making the big shot when we need it.”

“Having Phill back for another year will help us in our pursuit of reaching the playoffs and winning a championship.”

The Taipans now have five players signed for 2010/11 with Jones joining Dusty Rychart, Ian Crosswhite and Aaron Grabau and Alex Loughton.

More player signings are expected soon.
