NBA players pulling out of Worlds

Pau Gasol has decided to step away from his Spanish World Champs team to let his body rest up from 3 consecutive trips to the NBA post season. Dwight Howard is reportedly also in doubt to play for the US Team. They join the likes of Tony Parker and Ronny Turief who won't be playing

Spain..you know you've got an outstanding team when you lose one of the World's best centers and you can still replace him with a center who averaged 13 and 9 in the NBA this season. (Marc Gasol)

I think it's a good move..a few injuries for Pau this year is a bit of an indication that his body needs a rest. Also will give Marc more exposure to international basketball and have long term benefits in his development

Slovenia might be down 2 players if they happen to meet in a dark alley somewhere prior to Worlds!

Don't know about Spain but the USA team looks strong, even if Dwight Howard is injured.

The 27 players will be eligible to play for the U.S. in the 2010 world championships and, if the U.S. qualifies, the 2012 London Olympics:

2008 Olympians - Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets), Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz), Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors), Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers), Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers), Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets), Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat) and Deron Williams (Utah Jazz).

2004 Olympians - Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers) and Amare Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns).

Newcomers - LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers), Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies), Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers), Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers), Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers), Al Jefferson (Minnesota Timberwolves), David Lee (New York Knicks), Brook Lopez (New Jersey Nets), Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves), O.J. Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies), Kendrick Perkins (Boston Celtics), Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), Gerald Wallace (Charlotte Bobcats) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).

Coach K in charge again.

As if you would pass up the world championships just to get a few weeks extra rest

Flights, preparation, trainings, media, games. And the rest you could get instead might be crucial to your performance in the job that pays you insane amounts of money.

Anthony, Bryant and Wade are the key. Without at least two of those three the US wont win gold. Paul and Williams are also important.

Without the guys who have learned the international game over the past few years, particularly on the perimeter, I think they will come up short.
