Basketball is Victoria's most popular sport!

The AFL is not the most popular sport in Victoria despite what the AFL would have you believe...

Putting aside the recent woes of the NBL, basketball continues to thrive at grass roots level in Victoria reports Melbourne's Herald-Sun.

"Aussie rules has been slam dunked by the popular American pastime, which has exploded in popularity across Melbourne's fringe. And with a whopping 35 per cent of Australia's registered players living in Melbourne's southeast corridor, basketball chiefs have warned there's no stopping the boom."

"The Australian Sports Commission's Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey showed more than 230,000 Victorians aged 15 and over squeeze into their trainers and run onto the basketball court every week, with soccer attracting more than 228,000 participants. AFL comes thrid with 220,000 participants."

"Nationally, soccer topped the poll with the biggest jump in popularity - up 52 per cent since 2001. The biggest increase in the sport occurred during 2007 and '08. But Aussie rules wasn't far behind with a 38 per cent increase for the same period."

Just confirming what a lot of people already knew down in Melbourne...very good to see. Any idea what the stats are for Adelaide?

Add to that a maasive number of Victorian kids under 15 who play the sport. One American recruiter once said that Victoria is a strong a basketball heartland as anywhere in the world, including Indiana!

Totally agree.
And the good thing is that the older ones, if and once they have kids, are more likely to encourage their kids to play basketball as well...

That is my dream for SA,but clubs being choked by our governing body dont give the sport much of a chance. A shcool programme should be introduced,im sick to death of netball/afl/cricket/rugby being shoved down kids throats.
