Nowitzki to opt out and joint the Free Agent queue

Another marquee NBA player is set to enter the Free Agent market, with Dallas Mavericks All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki officially opting out of the final year of his current contract.

From the article:

"Nowitzki will forfeit next season's scheduled $21.5 million salary by opting out and is eligible to receive a four-year deal from the Mavericks worth a maximum of $96 million. Dallas is precluded from offering him a longer deal because of the league's over-36 rule, which prohibits giving players the league maximum if they will turn 36 before the contract expires. Nowitzki turned 32 earlier this month. The Mavericks have spent the past several weeks trying to convince Nowitzki to sign an extension that would keep him off the open market. But opting out provides him with multiple contractual benefits. One of them is the ability to incorporate a no-trade clause into a new deal, which can only be secured by players -- in a new contract, not an extension -- with at least eight years of service time and four with the same team."

So does he still remain in Dallas or could he be headed elsewhere?

Saw something on ESPN saying that the Mavs were interested in Al Jefferson.

Mavs are also trying to secure LeBron James as well - as are many other teams!

If he doesn't resign with Dallas will he get a Max contract?? I would assume yes considering all the teams that have huge capspace but is he really worth a long term max contract? I think alot of players are going to get grossly overpaid this free agency period.

I'd welcome Dirk to the Knicks if Lebron and Bosh can't be done.

Dirk aint going anywhere. Just cashing in for a longer deal before the lock out and new CBA.

D-Whistle has also nominated the Mavs as being a team that interests him. Miami, Chicago and now Dallas.

Also some chatter that they will go after Joe Johnson via a sign and trade.
