Clubs unhappy with NBL Finals Format

Article in the Herald Sun the other day saying that many of NBL clubs were unhappy with the finals format and would like a change.

"There is a lot of disquiet among the clubs," a club official said. "It will be discussed at the participants meeting and quite seriously."

The knockout games meant playoffs were seemingly over before they started for some.

The article has slipped off the Herald Sun's site, but you can find it on the Tigers site here.

Read that Hurley was amazed at the finals set up.....if Hunter had been succesfull they would have had to play 2 knock outs on the road and one away game before the home fans would have seen them in the playoffs.

If this had have been the case a lot of momentum attendance wise would have been lost.

Top six 3 way series with highest placed loser advancing to another best of three for a final best of five would be a great way to go.

I still fail to see why basketball has to have best of 3,5,7 in the finals. Should the AFL look at bringing in a best of 3 for the grand final? What about soccer - should the World cup be a best of 3 event?

The short system works for some sports. In regards to Football/Soccer the way the game of football is played a series would take way too long and fan disinterest could set inn, Think how long the World CUp would take form start to finish if every game was a series!

Same thing would occur with the Superbowl, will never happen past a one game final, and that is half the appeal of the game/entertainment event.

If you were to take the Basbeall world series back to a one game Elimination, you would be shot. The entire appeal of the Baseball is a World Series that goes the distance. Basketball, especially in the States is going the same way, infact just in the past two seasons, the NBA has gone to a best of seven series from the opening round to the NBA Finals! For the NBL to then go backwards and add an elimnation aspect is amateur in there approach of having a fan friendly and competitve league... IN MY OPINION!

NBA didn't go to 7 last year. Kobe got whooped!

UEFA Champions league does a home/away series.

But the Champions League and UEFA Cups have one off finals. As do the majority of the European Cup finals (ie FA Cup etc). It's tradition more then anything. Same goes for bball.

What he said about the NBA was true - it has gone 7-7-7-7 for the finals series, so potentially there will be 7 game First Rounds.

The current format has been in place for 2 years. This is the answer given by Marc Howard of the NBL when questioned about how the format came about:

"Each of our teams has a representative at our quarterly Participants Meetings, where issues such as playoff formats are discussed and approved. Generally it is a representative of the owners group and in Adelaide's case, it is Brenton Higgins."

Its these representatives that need to realise that there is a problem with the current format and vote for a change.

Two knockout finals format was a joke. I know this topic is from years ago, but they should of just gone with quarter-finals with all teams involved.

Otherwise top-6 would of been fine keeping between those's years.
