2010 Stankovic Cup - commences 28 July

The Australian Boomers ramp up their 2010 World Championship preparations by taking part in the 2010 Stankovic Cup commencing on 28 July in Lizhou, China. The Boomers will be defending their title after winning this tournament last year.

They will play a round-robin series against China, Slovenia and Iran - all teams headed to Turkey - and teams that will be playing at or near full strength.

Schedule
28th July 16:30 Slovenia VS Iran
28th July 19:30 China VS Australia
29th July 16:00 Australia VS Slovenia
29th July 19:30 Iran VS China
30th July 16:00 Australia VS Iran
30th July 19:30 China VS Slovenia
1st August 16:00 Final-3rd
1st August 19:30 Final
(all times listed are Chinese local time)

I would like to think the Boomers can defend their title, with arguably the best lineup on paper since Beijing. China and Slovenia should prove very tough competition.

All the results will be posted in this thread hence the spoiler.

Last year Fox Sports showed the Boomers games from the Stankovic Cup (albeit weeks after the tournament finished) but it doesn't seem like they or One HD intend to show any games (if at all) this week.

As far as I know, nothing is scheduled for Foxtel or One HD. Your best bet is online...

The Boomers take on the host nation today who are ranked 9th in the world in their first game as defending champions of the Stankovic Cup, and the first time they will play a competitive game with the core group headed to the World Championships.

China at home are always tough to beat, and unlike last year boast players with NBA experience including Jianlian Yi and Sun Yue.

Australia defeated China with a last second shot from resulting from a Mills feed to Andersen to win by just 1 point, 64-63.

Whilst NBA player Yi Jianlian scored a game-high 17 points to go with 10 rebounds, Australia's Patty Mills top-scored for the visitors with 13 points and 7 rebounds and was well supported by Matt Nielsen who had 10 points and David Andersen with 8 points and 7 rebounds.

In the other game, Slovenia crushed Iran 107-74. for Slovenia, Sani Becirovic racked up 23 points with 6 assists, Goran Dragic scored 15 points with 4 assists, Samo Udrih added 19 points, 3 assists and 4 steals, and Primož Brezec contributed 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Australia play Slovenia tonight in a game that is now likely to decide who finishes the round-roubin games at the top of the table.

Some quick thoughts:

- Worthington, Nielsen and Martin were very impressive with their unselfish team play
- Mills (2 assists, 2 turnovers) was dynamic at times but unreliable at others
- Ingles tried to do too much
- Andersen really struggled offensively, 2/11 from the field, but his board work was ok and made a big shot
- Gibson and Markovic seemed susceptible to pressure against an average team
- Baynes seems far too foul prone to take to Turkey
- Our small line-up struggled on the boards against a team that isnt great on the boards (5th at FIBA Asia Champs)
- Did Barlow get injured? Made an impact and then didnt play again
- We didnt get enough drivinglanes for Newley or Mills out of our system, and we werent aggressive in transition.

Tonight will be an excellent test of what needs work a month out from the WCs.

In a much improved performance, Australia defeated Slovenia 77-63 last night to remain as the only undefeated in the tournament.

Patrick Mills and Adam Gibson led the Aussies with 15 points each, with Brad Newley adding 14 and Joe Ingles 12. Slovenia's scoring was led by Sani Becirovic with 15 points, Jaka Klobucar added 13 and Uros Slokar had 10.

In the other game, China accounted for Iran 86-64. Yi Yi Jianlian led the way in scoring for China once again, whilst Kamrani did the same for Iran.

Australia play Iran tonight at 6pm AEST, and China take on Slovenia immediately following. If Australia win, they play for gold tomorrow against the winner of the China vs Slovenia game.
