Junior Player Movement Gradings

We are just finishing our first year of Under 12 Div 1 at district and my son has to move up. The club is unable to advise it's policy on grading for next year. Do other clubs have policies and if so what are they ?

Absolutely clubs do. Have you spoken to your JDO directly?? This is your best port of call.

Yes clubs do. Contact the club's JDO.

They do? I haven't seen too many policies published or is it secret women's business?? At the end it is sosubjective especially when many kids are in the grey areas.

What is annoying with all of this is the need to pay money to trial or an intent to play when clubs do not pre-announce coaches and in some instances policies for selections. Why??

Simply put most clubs allow Division 1 coaches to have control of an age group.

At good clubs they will have done research and received feedback from previous coaches and the JDO but at the end of the day the Div 1 coach manages squads.

never seen any policy on this sort of thing. Posts above are correct div 1 coach is the age group leader and selects players with JDO. Usually best players make div 1 - either first or second years. next team is usually a lot of first year players that look like they will make div 1 next year. Depends on the amount of players in the age group. From there the 3rd 4th 5th 6th teams are all based on skills and ability to improve / commitment.
As recommended above have a discussion with your current JDO but if nothing changes expect more of the same. As a div 1 parent who moved to a stronger club to Div 2 level - we have never looked back as it was what we wanted. we had the odd season in div 1 but over 8 years we learnt more about the game and got exactly what we wanted out of it after moving. it really depends what you want and more importantly what suits your child.

Just home - spot on

A quick formula to remember though:
Player goes up an age group (eg. U12-U14) then goes down a division.
Player has second year in an age group, usually goes up a division.

As mentioned above, this is not set in concrete, there are a lot of contributing factors.
And yes the selection is subjective, unfortunately we are dealing with humans and often volunteers.

So before getting upset about little Johnny, consider volunteering for a committee position within your own club. You can make changes from the inside and see the difficulties dealing with a lot of parents who, are all positive little Johnny or Johnette is the next NBL/WNBL player.

Usually the best players play in the Div 1 team and this is a mixture of top and bottom age kids. Some clubs hold a spot or two in Div 1 to develop kids for the next year, some keep a group of kids together and play last years U12 Div 1's as U14 Div 2's, then they play U14 Div 1 as a top age. The Div 1 coach at most clubs makes the final decision in conjunction with a number of factors.

There's always hard decisions to make and parent see kids playing Divisions higher than theirs and think "they're not as good as Johnny".

Don't worry too much about whether they play as a Div 1 or a Div 6, just so long as they are having fun enjoying the game, keeping fit, meeting new people, growing through being challenged and keeping off the streets !
