Best way to convert old VHS to digital

I've been looking around on the net to find the best (not too costly) way to convert old vhs and vhsc tapes to digital on my computer. However I am getting a bit confused with all the different programs etc as to which is the best for what I want to do.

I figured going through the computer was the best way so I could edit etc, and take out adverts before burning to dvd.

Is there any tech savvy posters here that can point me in the right direction?

LOL TR..
Should have expected that one...

Old videos of the kid's birthdays from 10 years ago, plus an extensive collection of NBA from '86 onwards.

Maybe some of the MJ games are almost in that category ha ha. So can you help TR, or are you just here for the comedy hour? : )

DB5, the way I do it is with my vcr/dvd recorder combo, although I'm guessing you dont have access to one of the those. Might be a worthwhile investment seeing as you have a helluva lot of stuff to convert

I'd be curious to know the answer to this also as I'd love to convert my old NBA games and Brisbane Lion matches during the Premiership era.

some easy options are:

Convert to DVD intitially by just copying. Then you purchase some simple ripping software that will transfer it to MP4 for instance.

Wondershare have several programs that cost roughly $40.

I have a TV card in my laptop. I tune it to an old VCR and record the tape contents onto the PC. I then use editing software (Nero 10 in my case) to make any changes, add titles, etc. I then burn to a DVD. The quality is not too bad.

If you could buy or borrow a TV USB dongle (cost around $80), you should be able to do the same thing. The editing part is really just a bonus. Any burning s/w should then be ok. The only hassle you might have is the video format (compression and/or container type) that the TV software uses. Not all software recognises all formats.

Thanks guys.

Editing is required, as some tapes have ads in them, and I also need to put some of the home videos into some sort of chronological order.

Are you talking hoops or porn now TR? ; )

anon, I was looking at going the vhs/dvd recorder, but I believe I would not be able to take out any adverts etc, is this true?

RG, have just been investigating the tv card option, possibly Leadtek vc100 video editor. Looks like it isn't too hard to work with my lack of know how...

The VHS/DVD recorder combo will allow you to edit, but only very basic. As in hit pause on the dvd recorder, fast forward thru the ads on the VHS then hit record on the DVD again. For alot of copying this is definatly not the way to go. Time consuming, and very fiddly. Go through the PC, much easier to edit and a hell of a lot less stressful.

cheers Detroit.

ha ha TR, that's what I thought.
No using paying people to do it, I would have about 30 tapes with 2 - 3 games on each. Would cost a fortune! Cheers for the link though mate.

Big Egg Media are friends of one of my employees. We've had them do some stuff before and recommend them.

Thanks Isaac, but at 25 bucks a tape or so it will be too pricey for 30+ tapes that need converting.

If it was just a couple I would probably go for it.

How often do you anticipate watching these videos? Is it worth spending all this time now editing out the ads for something you're only going to watch once a year and can fast forward through at the time of viewing?

Yeah billo as there is some old footage that needs to be taken out.
Also there are around 10 home videos of the kids over the years, all in random order wherever I had space on a tape. Major project I know, but hey, I am hoping it will be appreciated in years to come (like 21sts) ha ha.

DB is hoping for a hot tub flashback thing to happen...

He'll crack that old VHS player out of the cupboard, blow the dust of it, slot in a tape and wham-oh... back to the mid 1980's to replay his mispent youth and catch up on all those missed opportunities...

i have done this myself via both vcr/dvd combo and plug in dvd converter via the previous post. I even bought one of the tv tuner cards that plugs into one of the slots inside the pc.

the dvd vcr combo is cumbersome and time consuming because you have to know when the adds are on to delete them out. this means sitting in front of the tv to edit them out. This is not fun believe me this is not fun i have done it.

i found the better way was to record the tape onto a large hdd and use editing software to edit out quickly the bits you dont need and then whamo burn dvd. you could be doing something while the tape is burning to the hard drive in one hit. then just spend the time editing the file on the hard drive. video editing software should come with the tv tuner card or the plug in model for the usb.

I have done a file of the 2007 36ers quiz night and the celebrations of the 2002 championship(the winners parade on rundle mall, the premiers reception etc) posted it on youtube so you get some idea of what is possible.

I am happy to discuss the pros and cons over the phone or via email if this will help. Currently trying to get the 1999 36ers grand final road trip on to DVD to keep for prosperity.

my contact details are in the ADD on the right hand side of this page.

Have a go and have some fun with it.
