Redhage done for the season

Just reported by Shayne Hope of the West Australian on Twitter.

RT: @shayne_hope: Redhage dislocated hip, out for the season! #NBL

This is a HUGE loss for the Wildcats and could potentially ruin a chance at repeating last years Championship success IMO.

EDIT: Article is up on NBL.com.au

Redhage went down late in the contest at The Dome in Adelaide injuring his hip and tests this evening have revealed a dislocation. He will now have surgery tonight to put the hip back in place and he will be out for the rest of the season.

Hope he has a speedy recovery, as much as i dont like him if he played in our colours i would love him lol

Depending on how the injury waiver rules work ie if we can keep Brown, I think we have the depth to still contend. It just means Weigh will have to step up.

Step up?. He stepped up when Knights broke down....He now has to step up again?

Both the addition of Brown and Majok come at a good time for Perth. It allows Perth to retain a nice balance to the team.

The players who will need to step up are Lisch and Martin and to a lesser extent Trueman. If anything this injury will reinforce just how deeply talented the Perth line up is.

Ouch! That is gonna hurt Perth's chances. Redhage is such a good weapon because he creates really difficult mismatches for other teams.

Still a good shot to make the GF because of their depth, but they'd want to shoot a lot better than they did tonight!

I agree that Weigh is probably the guy they need to step up most. There's not a lot of other guys on that roster that will score big against other teams half court defence.

What was up with Marto tonight? He wasn't his usual pesky self I thought! (Though I will give some credit to our guards, who generally did a good job taking care of the ball).

i'm not too sure!

Obviously they would have to be under the points cap, they'd have to be under the salary cap but i can seem to remember a rule that states once that player comes back they cant stay on!?

anyone know any different?

I think if another player goes down with a season ending injury then its ok for him to be the replacement player for him too. I guess the rule is in place to stop clubs sacking local players mid season just because they find a decent import.

@DJ Rod

Once Knight comes back Perth points will be

Brown - 10
Lisch - 9 ( GF MVP and he is a 9!?!?)
Knight - 8 ( this is a guess because he is not actually listed on nbl.com.au)
Martin - 7 ( A member of the WC team and he is a 7 WTF?)
Weigh -7
Wagstaff-6
Williamson-6
Robbins-6
Tovey - 6
Trueman - 4

The dumb thing is that Matok is now out (unless they cut Brown) which means another team can sign him ( hello Cairns with Al Loughton on the ropes)

A rule designed to balance out the talent now sees an exciting bums on seats type aussie out of the league

EXCEPT THAT

I beleive Matok qualifies as the Perth u/24 as he was born July 4 1987 so Trueman will definitely get bumped as long as Matok is 4 points. So in a round about way they have just replaced Redhage with Brown and Matok , that is an upgrade no matter which way you cut the chicken.

Reply #305298 | Report this post

The Situation

No, Trueman will not be getting bumped for Majok. The rules state that once the injured player (Wagstaff) returns then the replacement player has to go. The only circumstance in which Majok can stay is if another player suffers a season ending injury.

i believe you dont know what you are talking about, the rules do not say that at all.

Majok can still come into the team on a full contract.

There is now nothing to stop the Cats cutting Trueman and signing Majok to a full contract for the rest of the season- assuming he is 4 points or less which he should be.

easy call for mine.

I suspect Majok will sign with the Kings once Wagstaff returns. Perth could keep him instead of Brown to replace Redhage, but I think they need to keep Brown now that Redhage is out, and still have a pretty good team assuming Wagstaff and Knight get back to full form, and there is still 10 weeks until the playoffs.

Brown, Knight, Weigh, Lisch, Martin
Trueman, Wagstaff, Tovey, Williamson, Robbins

They will really miss Redhage's shooting and speed at both ends of the floor though, they will have to modify the game plan a bit.

What would Majok's points value be given that he has played professionally before entering the NBL? Is it not an automatic 10 because he didn't play first division in Europe?

Reply #305309 | Report this post

KB3
Years ago

i believe all other leagues outside NBA and Euro league mean you are an 8 read Knight , Khazzouh , Helliwell etc

Dumb part of that rule is that most of those players would have been ranked higher had they not left the NBL

eg Ballinger leaves here as a 10 plays a season in d3 litho league and comes back as an 8 !

technically Ebi Ere would now be an 8 point player in the NBL under the rules.

Reply #305310 | Report this post

I dont believe that's true KB3, (I checked the rule on your advice!) and Majok can now only be used as a season-ending injury replacement at Perth. Same with Brown.

Trueman would have to be injured, or 'injured' to be replaced, but I dont think Perth would take the second option.

Yeah, except that Bevo just called Majok out for turning up to his pre-game meetings for two games in a row, and despite flashes of potential, has not done what is expected of him. There is no way that Trueman is getting cut for Majok.

Re: point ratings, I think you have mis-read the rule, I am pretty sure imports are 10 unless they have played in the NBL and their stats produce a lower rating. McCullough, Sanders, Gilder, Wilkinson etc etc all came into the league this year from European competitions and were a ten. Ballinger played in Israel and maintained the same rating.

Majok. As I said, turning up late to games for two weeks in a row. Thats a no-no in any system, especially Bevo's.

On the court, he seems to want to settle for outside shots rather than cut hard to the basket at the right times. There have been a few plays in his games where if he moved towards the basket, he'd have an easy dunk from a drive and dish. Instead, he's been stepping back and wanting a baseline J instead. In the games where his minutes have been reduced, he has forced some bad shots, looks like he wants to get his points up in a hurry.

I know he has got potential and has blocked some big shots but I don't know that he'd be a better fit for the team than Brown.

Gutted about Redhage. That finished off a very average night for the Cats.

All props to Ballinger - he was solid last night and the 3 with 4 seconds left was the cherry on top.

Unless things have changed, which is quite likley, Majok is only in Aus for a 6 week gig as he was seeking a contract in Europe. Presuming that hasn't changed I wouldn't expect him to be sticking around for any club.

From what I have seen I'd rather have Brown over Majok any day. Majok has potential, but he looks like he's got a way to go yet.

Brown however, has fit right in and even though he's not had time to pick up Perth's play's yet, his game IQ has had him in the right place at the right time repeatedly so far.

Regardless of how the sqaud shapes up though, if we can't get some consistency in the games we won't make the GF with or without Redhage. As a fan it's so frustrating watching the Cat's play their A game one quarter and then fumble around and fire-and-miss from beyond the arc repeatedly the next. *sighs*

Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

a replacement player can only come in for one player. if someone else goes down with a season-ending injury they can't come in for that player. the only exception is if it's an import, then they can replace a second player. so brown can take rehage's spot when wagstaff/knight comes back but majok can't take anyone else's spot. same thing happened to tim lang last year when he replaced anstey, even though the tigers had three more season-ending injuries after that

If Perth have spent over the salary cap to put together a championship contending team, then I have no sympathy whatsoever that they've lost Redhage to injury and they lose Majok in 2 weeks. Perth's roster without these players would probably resemble closer to a salary cap honouring team. Its tough luck for Redhage personally but not for the team.

Not going to cheer for Redhage's injury, that's just falling to the same depths, but I agree with some of the resentment towards him. I lost all respect for him as a player when he started nudging Jacob Holmes in the back and then leaning back as far as he could pretending he had been hit, twice in a row, while the ball was in Perth's backcourt (so it wasnt seen). I honestly think he was taking out his anger generated from his poor performance that game on our team. I know players flop quite often, but the pushing in the back and then pretending you were hit crap is absolute bottom of the barrel bull***. Needless to say, I didn't applaud when he left the court.

Of course he's a thug. Saying he doesn't intentionally hurt opposition players is incredibly one-eyed and naive. To what degree is debatable, but how is elbowing people in the face not "intentionally hurting someone"?

And Red, so we're allowed to recognize him as the dirty animal he is when he's fit but as soon as he gets injured we can't. That's crap. I bet you're one of the blokes who started pretending Michael Jackson was an angel the second he died too.

Thanks for misquoting me entirely, Xztatik. Try and follow the discussion with both hands from now on.

Redhage suffered a season-ending injury. You, and others, seem to think that is fair because he antagonises opponents, behind the play or while setting screens. I am saying that while that may be true, he has never set out to intentionally INJURE someone at any stage. Do you understand the difference? Has CJ Bruton missed games because of these errant elbows? In all your basketball experience, is an elbow to the head while setting a screen LIKELY to put someone out of action for an entire season? Has Redhage ever done anything like stick his foot under the legs of an opponent while he shooting, or tunneled someone who is in the air? You know, acts which will cause an INJURY?

Reply #305465 | Report this post

Brown
Years ago

Elbows can cause a very serious injury to the head which is why you can't use your elbows to defend the ball offensively. Aiming a blow from the elbow (a small surface area with high force) to the head is definately dangerous, especially if it hit the neck instead, so yes I would call that as an attempt to injure someone.

Reply #305480 | Report this post

xztatik

Lol "Misquoting you entirely". Hurt/injured. A player can be injured without "missing games" (was that one ok? I know you said "missed" but I changed the tense). A blood nose is an "injury".

You're a fuckhead mate. Redhage is the biggest cock in the league and I am glad I won't have to watch his disgraceful antics for another year (or more). If you, or anyone else, think I'm a prick because of that then so be it. I really couldn't give a fat rat's tossbag. See ya next year Shawn.

Reply #305481 | Report this post

The Situation

You'd have to make a pretty good effort of swinging your elbow forcefully towards a certain area to come close to injuring someone though, right? And using Mystro's example of doing it while setting a screen, is he saying that he was trying to put Bruton of action? If so, why did no ref on the court notice such a callous act? No replays picked it up? The Breakers didn't make an official complaint?

The point is, we're comparing apples with oranges.

Yes Redhage is a dirty player, but there's plenty of them around the league, name a player who Redhage has actually delibrately caused an injury to? But to think like that after he actually picks up an injury is inhumane and just plain disturbing, you need psychological help.

No he can stay in the team as Redhage is out, that is what Chuck is saying and what has been reported by the Gaze / Bernard podcast.

They dont have the points to do it so if they want to keep him it will come at a cost of another player when Wagstaff comes back

Brown = Knight , Majok = Wagstaff at present.

When Knight and Wagstaff come in, Brown and Matok are out

Redhage is out = Brown or Majok back in ( Brown most likely)

for Majok to come in another player has to be cut or go down injured for the rest of the season.

same as what happened in Adelaide Bruce came into replace Carter but can now stay in the team when he returns as Ng is out for the year.
