Phill Jones found guilty, fined $1,000

The National Basketball League has fined Cairns Taipans player Phill Jones $1,000 after he was found guilty on the charge of 'Head Butting' by the NBL Tribunal.

Jones was reported by the match officials following his team’s 76-75 loss to the Sydney Kings at the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday night for allegedly head butting Sydney player Ben Madgen in the closing stages of the first quarter.

NBL Tribunal Chairman Scott Derwin took interviews by phone yesterday (Tuesday) and found that Jones was guilty as charged and fined him $1,000.

The full finding of the NBL Tribunal is below.

Charge/s dated 26th February 2011 against Cairns player, Phill Jones on a charge of Head Butting
Hearing: The hearing was conducted today by telephone at the request of Cairns club, on behalf of Phill Jones. Two of the game officials, Kings Player Madgen, Score Bench Chair Trish Brown and Jones were interviewed.

Finding/s:
Player Jones found guilty of the charge of Head Butting.

Penalty/ penalties:
$1,000 fine payable to NBL Office by 5:00PM AEDT 16th March 2011. If payment is not made by that time the player is suspended from his next 2 NBL fixture games.

In arriving at the penalty, the Tribunal took into account in determining the penalty some mitigating circumstances, such as the provocation caused by the Kings player in aggressively confronting Jones and the fact that no injury resulted from what could be described as a "soft" head butt. However countered against this are previous findings of the Tribunal which have resulted in 2-3 games suspensions for this charge. In addition, player Jones was before the Tribunal in the 2008/09 season on a charge of Striking which resulted in him being suspended for 1 game.

yet Janev did the same thing to Mitch Creek and didn't even hear boo from the NBL tribunal. A little consistency would go a long way.

Joe Blake has suggested that he should have thrown the ball at his face, it would have been more effective and cheaper.

On a side note, interesting they said they interviewed 2 match officials AND the score table chair. The score table and stats table are part of the officiating team, so I wonder why they had to differentiate.
