Drafting out of High School

Are you still allowed to Draft Players out of High School in the NBA. Just hasn't happened for a long time. If so I think whoever has the number 1 pick should draft Austin Rivers out of High School, He has a NBA ready game and he can shoot that Basketball incredibly.

NBA instigated a minimum 1 year in college rule for US High School players - hence the "one and done" terminology now widely used.

Not anymore. They made a compulsory rule now that all Draftees have to have attended 1 year of College or have played something like 2-3 years of International Basketball to be eligable.

Helps increase the number of mature players that enter the league and improves the overall quality of the talent. There's been more discussion about whether or not to force it to 3-4 years of Int experience or 2 years min in College.

Rule was brought in after the Leon Smith affair in 1999 from memory.

They do require 1 year of college before being allowed to declare, but for international players they have to be at least 19 with 1 year of experience.

Under the above comments that means Brandon Jennings shouldnt even be in the NBA.

He has not completed 1 year in college and he not an international players.

without knowing the exactly workding of the rule its something in the lines of

A player cannot be drafted by a NBA club until they are at least 12 month out of High School. This allows players to play College or overseas in that 12 months.

This helps mature the athlete both physically and mentally for the pressures of playing NBA.

The Banker, Jennings was eligable. The kid played in Italy and Europe after finishing High School for a few years.

Would have gone to College but chose to travel instead.

Here you go according to Wiki

In the past, high school players were also eligible to be selected. However, starting in the 2006 Draft, high school players were not eligible to enter the draft directly after graduating high school. The rules now state that high school players will gain eligibility for draft selection one year after their high school graduation and they must also be at least 19 years old as of the end of the calendar year of the draft

Austin Rivers is going to Duke next season, committed to them a while back. They will be a strong team with him and Kyrie Irving, plus another Plumlee brother.
This has always been a heated topic and only changed a few years back. Many of the kids that go straight from Highschool to NBA aren't quite mature enough to handle the pressure of playing 60 plus games a season, and although there have been a few exceptions most take a few years to develop into a decent nba player.
I'm a big college fan so I love that these guys have to at least play one year of college ball....Wish it was two years like the NFL!!
