ABL Preseason tournament

Hi all, no discussion about the preseason tournament over the weekend. Did any hoopsters get out to see any games?

What do teams look like?
Who were the big performers?
News on new additions?

Men:
- Norwood beat sturt in the GF by 20.
- Norwood had a full lineup, sturt were missing 4 starters (Warbout, Daly, Holmes, Ng)
- Looking forward to round 1 win they play each other.
- Woodville comfortably worst team out there.
- Southern Tigers new import is average. 6 foot 6, 120kg. Spends most of his time holding opposition jerseys. Not much offensive game, just a huge body.
- Woodville's import is just a shooter, not a whole lot to him.
- South will suck until they get Johnson and Creek.
- West relied completely on Truslove and Spud this weekend.
- Hard to say who the big performers were. Most teams rotated their lineup and played 10 guys each match. I thought Marriot was impressive for sturt, and ely for norwood

DJ and Creek to south would have been done months ago if the sixers weren't trying to control them. Maybe Clarke should stop worrying about his mates ABA tram and start worrying about his failing NBL one.

West import looks the goods. Struggled early in the tournament shooting the ball, however when he was struggling he didn't shoot as much and distributed the ball very well for easy buckets. When he was on tho knocked 8 threes against southern.

West women played pretty well, they were almost at full strength with only Irene Soulatzis to come back into the side.

Norwood were with out Foley, Duke and Romeo

Sturt were pretty reasonably good, and will be alot better when Monz and Madgen play.

Looks like a long season for Woodville and Southern.

Any news on how recent aquisitions fared?

West - Braithwaite
South - Boal
Norwood - Hambour
Woodville - Blight?

All interesting transfers IMO...

Think you will find Norwood doesnt have Duke and Foley this season, they have both moved on.

I could be wrong, but I thought that was dicussed on here months ago.

long season for several clubs not just woodville tigers south and centrals - top teams are already set up - it very predictable
might be some interest in remaining final spot but seems bottom clubs not dont much to improve lists

Sturt woment will be very good with Madgen and Monz. Would give current Lightning a close game.

The only problem with this is that it will limit opportunity for all of the great junior players who were on the bench on the weekend. Most of which have played state basketball for SA.

As a parent that is a problem with sturt, that after my daughter has finsihed juniors limited opportunities to play aba for sturt.

So perhaps time to look elsewhere.

Norwood definitely not at full strength. Didnt see thompson, krause, ottey or hambour play in the final. they are looking the goods for this year IMO

Woodville were missing Knight, Reeves, Pilkington, Campbell (import), Miller and Furness all weekend, Blight for 3 games, Egel for 2 and had there major fundraiser for the year on saturday night. Not to worried about the carnival if you ask me.

Womens to come in yet:

West- Soulatsis
Sturt- Monz Madgen
Forestville-DNP but lost Newley will have 1 wnbl player
Norwood- hansberry,foley, payne, talbot, ireland
Southern - Cutri
South - Lil Keane
Woodville - ?? as is?
Centrals- Import + Mahoney
Eastern- all the money went to the men
North- joey / import(singapore)

Hard to say how accurate that list is

Forestville West Sturt Norwood South as my top 5 at this stage.

SSTomatin, interesting. By moving to your club after her poach her on a forum taking one of YOUR junior spots, are you not creating the same problem for YOUR juniors she is currently facing at Sturt..... If she's a senior player/played state I'm sure she knows the right clubs to call.

lol re Eastern. All too true. Their committee is shocking and the women's program is obviously of very little concern to them. I'm a little unsure how they will even field a team this season. Must be 90% juniors.

Yo - ok so you have a gripe anout the $$ spent on the men's programme versus the women's BUT having a swipe at the committee? Most general committees at Bball clubs have nought to do with the recruitment and retainment of players, it would mainly be left up to the hierachy, eg President in consultation with the Treasurer, ABA coach, Senior programme personnel.

Your committee appears to do a lot of hard work, getting your ABA teams and nights to happen. Why would you knock them. What is it that you do for your club? which I am assuming is the Mavs club!

I am not associated with Mavs just dont understand your criticism of the committee

hustle,

from the few games I saw Braithwaite didn't play except for last game against old team and played pretty well, probably had close to 20.

Boal seemed to struggle at times with different team, but may have been injured?

Hambour was pretty good for Flames when he played, seemed to fit in well and gives Norwood ANOTHER big presence in the paint.

Blight didn't play all weekend.

Pilkington can't - Woodville already got Blight from South. South can refuse to release Pilkington.
