Aussie Irving nominates for draft

Potentially the greatest Australian-born player ever has nominated for the NBA draft. I think in the event he ever gets selected for the USA and is scheduled to play against Australia he should sit it out respectfully as Tim Duncan did V the Virgin Islands.

Of course I'm joking but I wonder whether the media over here will make anything of his birthplace in the event he goes number 1.

His Dad was a smooth player. Brett Brown imported him to Bulleen in 2002 from memory. I've heard his son is a slick point guard who can seriously play. His Dad Dredrick was a great guy too!

From an article in USA Basketball June 2010

http://www.usabasketball.com/mens/u18/10_mu18_q_a_irving.html

Headed to Duke in the fall to play for USA Basketball Men's National Team head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Irving had a tough decision to make prior to arriving at the USA U18 National Team training camp in San Antonio last week. Born in Australia, he lived in Cue, a town near Melbourne, until he was a year and a half while his father played pro ball for the Bulleen Boomers. As a dual citizen, Irving had the option of playing for Australia or for the United States. If he chose Australia, he would more than likely be going up against Coach K and the U.S. at the 2012 London Olympics. Instead, he opted to don the red, white and blue and hope that his game is good enough four or six years down the road to play for the USA Basketball National Team.

Something that article missed:

"If he chose Australia, he would more than likely be going up against Coach K and the U.S. at the 2012 London Olympics. Instead, he opted to don the red, white and blue [unfortunately for him he now may come up against his country of birth which would surely be a horrible moment for him].

Well firstly It's the wrong decision, he should have left it 1 more year, having missed so many games to injury then electing into the draft okay weird move! He's still projected to go early, maybe a mid first rounder but definately not in the top 5 if Kemba Walker doesn't get drafted before him there is something completely wrong. Secondly, If Kyrie isn't staring in the NBA if drafted, there may be a chance that he does suit up for Aus. Some players have done it in the past, Chris Kaman from the LA Clippers is 1 tried to play for america didn't pan out so he used his second passport to play with Germany....

Yep, nice to have options...

I reckon Brett Brown would be jizzing in his pants just with the thought of having Mills & Irving in his Boomer backcourt!!

Kaman never represented USA before while Irving has. unless we are that desperate to claim Irving and make him an exception to the rule

He is projected as possible #1 pick, and only played 11 college games this year. Hats off to Duke staff for getting him ready in time for NCAA tourny. Would loved to see him spend another year at Duke with the recruiting class they have coming in. Would be even better seeing him sporting the Aussie colours at the Olympics but we all know it will never happen :(

No offense but I don't think Irving even considers himself as an Australian.
