Breakers have signed 17yo as Development player

17yo Isaac Fotu from Aucklands Rangitoto College has moved up from the Breakers Academy Squad to take up 1 of the Development player spots. He is hoping to play College Ball in the States next year so this is def a step in the right direction for him.

Oh never mind, just read it on Stuff.co.nz now.

They have added Dion Prewster and Josh Bloxham to contracted DP's, while Fotu fils the 'non-contracted' DP spot.

The Breakers are still trying to get Steve Adams involved with the team.

Wouldn't playing in a fully professional league make him ineligable for college? Development players sitll get paid right?

Macdub it may be wise to not use the acronym for Development Player, it could be misconstrued ;-)

The rules have changed. As long as you dont get paid you can play in a pro league and still be NCAA eligible.

Can still get paid unless as you don't receive any more "beyond ordinary means for living" e.g.Enes Kanter was ineligible because he received more money than was determined 'adequate for living'..He was on numerous hundred thousand and the NCAA deemed that this was well in excess of his living costs.

Fotu is a non-contracted Development Player (Im not using the acronymn now SRT070 ;) Therefore he won't receive income anyway I believe.

Would have like to see Dion Prewster stay at college (NCAA Div 1- Stephen F.Austin). I would have thought that that would have been the best for his development.
He was averaging 17 mins a game (5ppg and 3rpg), so its not like he wasn't playing..Coming to the Breakers he is unlikely to see alot of action.

I was told that Andrew Gaze messed things up for everyone by going to college whilst being paid squillions by an NBL club.

True, but he did get paid quite well before that. Squillions is quite a stretch though, especially when talking about the Melbourne Tigers in the late 80s! They played in front of a man and his dog and barely won a game back then.
