Ten Greatest Teams in NBL History

Matt McQuade is doing his top 10 greatest NBL Teams on the NBL website.
So far It's
10: 85 Brisbane Bullets
9: 80 StKilda Saints
8: 02/03 Sydney Kings
7: 99/00 Perth Wildcats

How would you have your 10?
Which of the Sixers teams should be there?
I'd have 86 and 98.

You talking teams or teams in seasons?

The 97/98 Magic were unbelievable but then fell at the final hurdle to the Tigers/36ers

Surely the Wildcats with Crawford, Vlahov, Fisher, Grace, Stewart, Trahair etc would be the best team in the NBL ever.

Id say the Dragons final season team would be the next best.

"Adelaide hasn't beaten the Magic in Melbourne since July 15, 1989. They are 0 and 5 in Melbourne this season. The Magic are 15 and 1 on this court....This isn't meant to have happened!" - Clinton Grybas

Be interesting to see if the Breakers make it in there.
Since the evening out of the league occurred and salary caps are more policed, their team is one of the best I've seen. South's team was huge too.

Hmm...
How do they stack up against 98 Sixers?
Maher, Mee, Brooks, Cat, Rees, Davis, Ninnis, Rillie, Sapwell, Williams.
Penney, Bruton, Vukona, Wilkinson, Abercrombie, Braswell, Boucher, Pledger, Henare, Webster.
Worthington, Gibson, Vukona, Darden, Smith, Ingles, Horvath, Carter, Herbert.

Dragons also had Burston. Wow! Ridiculous team.
Look at that with current points:
Worthington 10
Darden 10
Smith 10
Gibson 9
Ingles 10 (you'd imagine)
Burston 8
Vukona 8
Horvath (hard to give a value)
Carter 5
Herbert 6
76 plus probably 7 for Horvath as an ex import

1986 team

Green 10
Davis 10
Jones 10
Pearce10
Nelson 7
Ninnis 5
Mckay 7
Ali 7
Wood 7
Spear / Sykes 3

Maybe light on with some of those points for 73 total.

Did Holmes play for the Dragons in their final season or was he already at 36ers by then?

Holmes played in the Shane Heal Captain/Coach year.

The championship was their final season (08/09). Holmes was there in 06/07 and the 07/08 season (where they were mostly woeful with Heal, though Holmes was captain and club MVP) and then returned to Adelaide from 08/09 while the Dragons went to the championship after cleaning out the roster.

Two more to go and no mention of any Sixer championships. I'm biased but surely the 86 team will fill one of the two final spots.

So far we have two Sydney championships and two Perth championships. Add to this Brisbane's first, and St Kilda from the early 80's, South East Melbourne and a Tiger's championship.

Incredible that both Ninnis and Davis were on the 86 and 98 teams...

06/07 Bullets are #2.

Defeated Melbourne Tigers 3-1 in Grand Final
Regular Season Record: 28-5
Playoffs: 5-1
Head Coach: Joey Wright

Key Players:
Sam Mackinnon, Forward
Ebi Ere, Guard/Forward
CJ Bruton, Guard
Mark Bradtke, Centre
Stephen Black, Guard

Surely a 36ers squad at #1.

As I recall 24 games were won by huge margins and 2 were 'lost' by the narrowest of margins in '86
and that's the best NBL record.

What happened to Stephen Black?

I got the impression that he just stopped getting the offers that he wanted? Heard that a few teammates didn't really enjoy playing with him. Pretty capable in his prime though.

That Bullets team also had Rychart. Who else? Brad Williamson? Was Boucher there at that point? Gibson yet?

Stephen Black had a degenerative back injury. He is coaching in regional QLD I have heard. I played some juniors with/against him, a genuinely pure shooter with genuine range on a three pointer. While Shane Heal was with the Kings Stephen used to practice with Hammer regularly (3 point shooting0, made him very arrogant but you can't argue with the results he got.

No. The Boomers would love to have him in his prime right now. Shame.

#1 has to be '86. It is the only team that would make sense, and no one in their right mind would leave the invincibles out of their top 10.

That means the 98/99 team misses out. That was a damn good team, but was a massive underdog to the incredibly good SE Melbourne that year. I think I would have snuck that team into the top 10 somewhere just because of the excitement of that incredible demolition of the previously untouchable Magic on their home court, but I guess I am biased.
