ABL Rivalry Week

I'm pretty sure it's not arranged this season, but maybe in 2006 we need an ABL Rivalry Week? Probably just going by name because besides Sturt vs anyone, are there any really intense rivalries?

I'm thinking of something like this:

North vs South
Eastern vs West
Forestville vs Woodville (the Villes!)
Southern vs Centrals (battle of the outlanders)
Sturt vs Norwood

SOunds pretty good, but you'd need new management surely to get an idea thinking out of the box running

If you want a real rivals week I'd say it would have to be:

North v Centrals
Sturt v Norwood
Woodville v West
Southern v South

That would leave Forestville v Eastern. Or have Forestville v Sturt as rivals and Norwood v Eastern as the one left out.

great idea Isaac!

I know i'll probably cop alot of flak for this, but we could really take a leaf out of Footy's book. Their marketing is leagues above ours, and i think something like this could bring basketball to people who wouldn't normally go to an ABL game.

I reckon the rivals could look like this.

Centrals vs Southern
Norwood vs Woodville
Sturt vs Forestville
West v East
North vs South

or

Centrals v North
Woodville v West
eastern v norwood
south v Southern
forestville v Sturt

Although there really isn't any 'rivals' in ABL ball... is there?

The only downside is that if you create 5 potential blockbuster match-ups (girls and guys), you're going to have the crowds spread between venues. I think it's worth doing despite that.

I think the East vs West and North vs South allows for some easy promoting of the games in The Advertiser and around the clubs.

I'd say a few rivals, not a lot of clubs appreciate Sturt

perhaps BASA could pick one 'blockbuster' game per week to advertise. Have one 'rival' game a week would allow more exposure (ensuring southern doesn't get it every week www.basa.com.au ha!).

Awesome idea, Dr Drunk!

Maybe BOTI could do a write-up about it too.
Stadiums could also put up the roster of the said BLOCKBUSTER games!

I doubt BASA would care, even though the idea rules!

let's have a double header day - bbq, bar etc

ie wood v west and sturt v forestville - or whoever

start 1200 on a sunday, 1430, 1700 and 1930 - 2 x girls, then 2 x guys games

for a full days basketball - all clubs divvy the takings and everyone gets a good basketball fix

I think South vs Southern, Forestville vs Sturt & Woodville vs West would be definites. Which means Norwood vs Eastern for the battle of the east & North vs Centrals for the battle of the north.

Though, Norwood & North are traditional rivals. Perhaps Norwood could play North & Eastern can play Centrals for the battle of the far-away clubs!

Our biggest rivals have always been either Southern or West. Great idea!

When you talk rivalries you can only talk about clubs who for years went to war and hated to lose to the other and you start with South and West. Those two clubs have won more championships then the rest of you second rate clubs combined. Werner Linde, Marsland, Hughes, King, Richardson, Ali, against Mike AhMatt, Davie, Pickett, Shipway, Spry, Joe Clarke, Whitford. Last man still standing turn out the lights. The older clubs like Forestville, North Adelaide didn't win or even play in enough grand finals to qualify. I saw the first grand final at Apollo, crowd was going ballistic just like the early days of the 36'ers.

Dunkenstein,

The NBL was doing rivalry rounds long before AFL made a big fuss over it. Six or seven years back they opened the season with games like Perth v Adelaide, Towns vs Cairns, Syd vs West Syd etc.

The NBL in turn stole that concept from the NBA who for something like decades have had rivarly weeks - as do all four major sports in the US in some way.

The AFL have been innovators with very little - but they've copied an awful lot.

cheers

Sorry to put a dampner on this thread as I like the ideas, but we better get a different writer for the each week rilvary game as Boti would write about whoever forestville is playing each week.

As for promotions, how about this,

5:00pm Under 23s East vs West
- East: State U20 Coach
- West State U20 Ass Coach

6:20pm 3pt ShootOut
- One from Each Club in Uniform

6:40pm ABL Legends East vs West
- East: Championship Winning Coach
- West: Championship Winning Coach

8:30pm Slam Dunk Contest
- One from each club in Uniform

9pm ABL East vs West
- East: Runner-Up Coach
- West: Championship Coach
