NBL Team Averages 2011-12 - So far

Well, we're nearly half way through the 2011-12 NBL Season and I'm a bit bored so I thought I'd put up some team scoring and defensive averages.

Adelaide 36ers: 8th
P - 12 W - 4 L - 8
Points For: 1,059 - 88.25 ppg (3rd)
Points Against: 1,121 - 93.42 ppg (9th)

Cairns Taipans: 6th
P - 12 W - 6 L - 6
Points For: 890 - 74.17 ppg (8th)
Points Against: 926 - 71.17 ppg (1st)

Gold Coast Blaze: 4th
P - 10 W - 5 L - 5
Points For: 851 - 85.1 ppg (4th)
Points Against: 845 - 84.5 ppg (=6th)

Melbourne Tigers: 3rd
P - 13 W - 7 L - 6
Points For: 1,093 - 84.08 ppg (5th)
Points Against: 1,073 - 82.54 ppg (5th)

New Zealand Breakers: 1st
P - 13 W - 10 L - 3
Points For: 1,151 - 88.54 ppg (2nd)
Points Against: 999 - 76.85 ppg (2nd)

Perth Wildcats: 2nd
P - 13 W - 8 L - 5
Points For: 1,155 - 88.85 ppg (1st)
Points Against: 1,064 - 81.85 ppg (3rd)

Sydney Kings: 7th
P - 13 W - 6 L - 7
Points For: 1,067 - 82.08 ppg (6th)
Points Against: 1,129 - 86.85 ppg (8th)

Townsville Crocodiles: 5th
P - 10 W - 5 L - 5
Points For: 820 - 82 ppg (7th)
Points Against: 817 - 81.7 ppg (4th)

Wollongong Hawks: 9th
P - 12 W - 3 L - 9
Points For: 905 - 71.42 ppg (9th)
Points Against: 1,014 - 84.5 ppg (=6th)

Now, if the NBL ladder went by Marty Clarke's "its not about wins and losses" then it would look (offensively speaking) like this: (can we lobby the NBL for this ladder to be the official one?)

Perth Wildcats
New Zealand Breakers
Adelaide 36ers (I like this ladder)
Gold Coast Blaze
Melbourne Tigers
Sydney Kings
Townsville Crocodiles
Cairns Taipans
Wollongong Hawks

If the ladder went on the average points against then it would be:

Cairns Taipans
New Zealand Breakers
Perth Wildcats
Townsville Crocodiles
Melbourne Tigers
Gold Coast Blaze
Wollongong Hawks
Sydney Kings
Adelaide 36ers

Ok, I've wasted enough time so enjoy. And hopefully the 36ers can give their fans who've traveled to the Gold Coast and those of us back here in Adelaide a great Christmas present by beating the Blaze tonight. Pity its not on OneHD.....

Pity the 36ers are the worst defensive team in the league by quite a margin too. 93 points against is disgraceful. You guys better fire Marty quick.

Points against is no measure of a successful team. It can depend on the tempo you're striving to play. Cairns on top of one ladder, bottom of the other - and Adelaide similarly vice versa. One plays up tempo, the other slowed down. Which would you rather watch? That said ..... those Denver Nuggets teams of the 1990s, regardless of result, sure would've been fun to watch ..... and play against.
