Is it time for a second NZ team

from Wellington, say? Do they have the financial backers for it to succeed?

Yes please, if only to dilute the tall blacks over two teams.

From the media reports it wouldn't seem that a second NZ team is a priority at the moment. Brisbane should be and then a second Melbourne / second NZ which ever has the better backing, which it would seem another Melbourne team does.

Wellington Saints have a very good organization. I like the Breakers having a stacked team but would not mind if NZ players went to another NZ franchise.

There are a few NZ players that would get NBL jobs as a result - Tait, Daniel, Bradshaw, etc.

a second NZ team would always be on the cards - if the financial backing, players, public interest and infrastructure exist.

Wellington is the obvious choice. Christchurch would be the other choice, but the case would need to be strong. ChCh gives the North Island-South Island rivalry then.

The NBL might need to look over the netball's picket fence to see how successful that has been and pick out the good points.

I love the diea of a 2nd NZ team, but I would personally like to see a team in Brisbane first.

Will be interesting to see what evolves with plenty of talk about a 2nd team in Melbourne come season 2013/14 as well...

Mystro/MACDUB, How much influence would you say the Breakers Development Program has on the development of young Kiwi players?

Would you agree that Wellington find it difficult initially to access NBL calibre NZ juniors because they are all (or a large percentage) in the Breakers program?

I think if there is a NBL team in Wellington/Christchurch, it opens formal roster opportunity for some ex/existing Breakers development players and also some southlanders players can be developed and emerged. That is good for NZ Basketball development and more diversification for the whole NBL league evolve. Personally really look forward to it.
Beside, Im wondering why there is still no announcement for the Brisbane expansion, is there any new flooding recently affecting the decision?

Breakers Academy is a huge part of player development in NZ. Breakers organization has been great, even the Tall Blacks use their facilities to train.
Breakers can't always hold on to every player coming through the ranks tho, Truman for example had to be let go and got snapped up by Perth and played pretty well last season. Would have been nice if he could have stayed in NZ playing for a New Zealand franchise. Corey Websters ban isn't going to last forever, Bradshaw and Tait as previously mentioned could have spots. Add a couple of NZNBL role players, 2 imports and any Australians you can poach and you have a team.
Wellington have a pretty good model to work off with the Breakers and can build their own Academy if they desire and it would give more NZNBL guys the opportunity in a tough league.
I would say the Breakers would have the pick of most of the players at the moment but guys want to play minutes and if Wellington's paying who knows what could happen.
Christchurch isn't really an option, they have historically struggled with even NZNBL franchises. It's Rugby country.
Wellington are pretty good at supporting their teams and there is money there to back it.

The breakers lose heaps of money every year from what i hear so i doubt a 2nd franchise is financially viable!

Bradshaw would NEVER get a gig if Wellington got a second franchise in the NBL. Is un-hireable!!

mystro a bit over a year ago there was an article where they interviewed the head guy from the saints and he said that the bank guarantee of 1 mil was a brick wall for them at the time, not sure if this has since changed or not but theres been no new news since, so...

Gareth Morgan (rich guy who got richer from Trade Me) and his investor friends are loaded and into getting behind Wellington, they own the Phoenix now and would not be surprised if they got involved to make it happen, 1 mill bank guarantee is a piss in a pond to them. I think Wellington would find a way to get round any hurdles even if he didn't help.
Breakers have solid sponsorship deals in place and the owners have plenty of bank, solid on court with a growing fan base and plenty of local media coverage. You don't own a sports franchise to make money lol.

havent had any confirmation that theyre financially viable to the point they need to be mystro, was just stating exactly what they had said when they were interviewed about it, and their statement was they didnt have the funding at the time. thats all im saying. if millions is a piss in a pond to them then im surprised they didnt put in for a licence at the same time as 2nd melb team also.

Christchurch is defiantly not an option for a team. They have not had a team in the NZBL in 2011 or 2012 and the priorities in christchurch lie elsewhere at the moment.

A 2nd New Zealand team could have:
Tait, Bradshaw, 1 or 2 current breakers (ie Benny Anthony and Leon Henry),3 or 4 solid Australian players, 2 imports and maybe some young players that are currently at college (Fannon, Loe, Edwards). Fill the rest out with NZBL players. coach either Dean Vickerman or Pero Cameron.

Agreed that brisbane and melbourne 2nd teams are priorities at the moment though.

Dont know what the moron who says get rid of nz breakers is thinking, mnaybe get rid rid of imports too you fool. Nz can handle 2nd team they dont have afl to compete with. 2nd melb team, bribane, a canberra youth team and wellington could expand slowly into nbl.
