Ben Allen breaks finger, in doubt

The Crocodiles have received a blow on the day of the NBL showdown with arch rivals Cairns, with centre Ben Allen breaking a finger.

Allen suffered the injury yesterday while completing an individual session with club legend pat Reidy.

It is bad timing for the Crocs and Allen, with coach Paul Woolpert revealing he had planned to use Allen and Luke Schenscher in tandem to combat Cairns' front court tonight.

There is still a chance the former St Mary’s college star will play and he travelled North with the team this morning.

Woolpert said the final call on whether Allen plays will come from the player.
Cue Boti joke about not leaving tough decisions to Allen...

What a loss for the Crocs, the league, and basketball on this planet.

Are we sure it is a finger and not a finger nail!!

Allen is currently fighting it out with Helliwell for the title of worst "big" in the league!

What a huge loss that is. No idea where the Crocs will get his 2pts a 1 rebound from.

Allen & Walker are good examples of why you can't asume that on okay college career will make you a success in the NBL.

They were pampered by having Patty and Omar take the heat, and have been a serious disappointment since.

Allen had a far greater impact at SMC than Walker ever did hoopie! Walker's collage career was solid at best, but I tend to think of his experience as more of a role player providing some solid minutes off the bench - at least that is how it ended. Allen finished his college career as a starter...

Also, quite a few D2 college players have gone onto good things - Worthington, Barlow, Madgen & Cooper etc...

Allen got 6 years in of college! A redshirt and sitting out due to transfer! He was nicknamed "Bench Allen" while at Indiana, the fans weren't a fan of him at all.

LC - fully agree that Ben Allen had more impact than Lucas Walker.

I still reckon his success was largely on the coat-tails of Samhan, because when Samhan wasn't on the court then Allen struggled to make an impact.

I'd be curious to know if Allen would benefit from an alternative program that included boxing (as one example), or if a change in club would help. Maybe losing a contract and having to fight and prove himself to get another? Remember that Vanderjagt season when he only got time because of Blaze injuries?

I know the coaches of Allen get tired of trying to motivate him. His career will be short ,,, which is why they keep telling him to pull his F%&^#ing finger out!!!

Ben has been working really hard with Pat Reidy on his post moves and foot work, according to the 7 news here in Townsville... unfortunately he hasn't worked on his D

I wonder if the Crocs will consider Greg Vanderjagt again?

Having him as Big Red's backup would be a lot better than having Allen IMO. Even though they only got him as an injury replacement GV had actually begun replacing Allen as the starting centre until Schenscher returned early.

Is Helliwell on a 1 or 2 year contract here in Adelaide? If its only 1 I would be seriously looking at Vanderjangt as DJ's backup rather than Helliwell for next season, um, providing we can keep DJ that is. Helliwell will be lucky to get picked up by another NBL club after his performances here this season and for the Tigers last year, unless its the rumored new Melbourne team.
