Geelong to host 3x3 Qualifiers

Geelong will host the Australia's inaugural FIBA 3x3 qualifying event over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend June 9 - 11, 2012.

The Geelong event will qualify two teams of four players to play at a world tour qualifying event in Vladivostok, Russia this July. These are the only two teams that will qualify from Australia.

Basketball Geelong also has the opportunity to host Australia’s World Tour qualifying event for the next three years, with our winning teams qualifying to an Asian region Pro Tour Event.

How was this event 'won'by the Geelong associations? Was it put out for tender by BA/FIBA??
Why would it be played in Geelong in WINTER??
Hello, GC, Cairns, Townsville.... GEELONG???

It was won by A geelong association, not the geelong associations.

From someone who lives in Geelong, dumb move to have it outdoors on the waterfront in the middle of winter. Agree with you Prince, there are much better places in Winter than down here.

Geelong is an interesting choice in winter!

My understanding is that BA submit these types of tenders through the states so maybe they got very few takers. I note that a significant part of the tournament is being played at the two indoor venues, so maybe the outdoor thing is a gimmick?

But 5k prize money and a trip to Russia might bring some players out, and long weekend in June means most of SEABL and BigV are not playing.

Are there any other basketball tournaments out there offering that sort of prize money?

This will be an indoor tournament, only the finals are scheduled outside (weather permitting)...

There is a concern that during winter the stadiums in Geelong produce lots of condensation overnight so any early games will have a chance of being put back and if it rains at the wrong angle the roof at the Arena leakes like a siv!

Otherwise, Geelong is an awesome place for basketball and the waterfront there is world class, the only thing is the time of year!

July in Geelong is freaking freezing.......!
