Australia vs US, U17 Final

US got up in the end, but a deserved silver medal for the Australian team. Well done.

Exum had 21.

The Aussies hung tough for the first six or seven minutes and then fell down double figures. They were then back to 28-22 halfway through the second but after that were never in the hunt.

Just not enough talent, and once the US zoned the shuffle (a real credit to how well the Aussies run it) they seemed to run out of ideas and died by the three-point sword, even though defensively they did a pretty good job of disrupting a very talented team.

But what a great effort to be 'the best of the rest', and they played as a real team. Well done boys.

Great effort by the Aussies - silver on the world stage is no mean feat. The core of this team have the talent to go onto even bigger and better things. Exum, Simmons, Djeric and Duncan in particular have put their names onto the International stage...

Absolutely 100% agree with your comments paul and LC. Being the 'best of the rest' is really extraordinary when you consider how many countries play high-level basketball. Jonathan Givony from Draft Express tweeted during the tournament that Exum and Simmons will be able to go to college anywhere they want to, so it will be very interesting to see if either of them end up with one of the big legendary college programs (think UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Kansas etc.)

Watched this game live and pauls comment is on the money, just not quite enough talent.

Our bigs were typical undersized but tough, intelligent, and could step out and shoot, we rebound well for a side that is not as big. Thats where the US hurt us and built their lead. Their posts were tough and we ended up having to double them and rotate out of the double, gave up a couple OR that way.

Was interesting that we played the old classic 1-2-2 extended then back to zone and made a run to get it close in the second.

We lived and died by the 3 ball and didnt hit enough. The yanks were tough quality athletic bigs and skilled guards.

I also saw the Croatians the other day and they were tough, contained the ball well, while the other 4 defenders contested EVERYTHING including position on the floor. Had a bunch of skilled bigs and ran some nice stuff to get good looks.

Didnt see us beat them and I know Djeric hit 7 3s when we did but were a bloody good side to be trading punches with the top teams in Europe like this lot. Its also nice to see Croatian hoops rising again, they had a few down years for a bit there.

Great result for Australia. The standout was obviously Exum.

Exum is great to watch. He has got some speed and explosiveness and can get into the lane and appears to be at least 6'4". I had heard about him, but wasn't expecting to be so impressed. It's not that often we have an All-Tournament player.

What should we expect from Exum in the next few years? How good is he likely to be in college? Is he good enough to get a call up to the senior team in 2 years time?

The kind of exciting thing is that he was so dominant, yet has so much room for improvement (in particular, his jumpshot and defense).

DE would look good in a Duke uniform, no doubt Coach K knows who he is now! His style of play is well suited to the college game. He will def play in the NBA in the near future.
Great effort by the Aussies for winning a silver medal. They have made us very proud and represented the country well. Can't wait for future Olympics with these guys on the team.
