Victorian Youth Championship Division

Proposal has gone out, 8 x SEABL D-League teams and top 8 x SYCM teams will combine to make a Youth Championship Division 2 conferences of 8 mixed in. Under this there will be Youth League 1 and Youth League 2.

Who will be the 8 Big V SYCM teams?

Diamond Valley
Melbourne
Hawthorn
Ringwood
Waverley
Eltham
Geelong
Sherbrooke

This is based on ladder positions from last season. I feel bad for poor old Sherbrooke. They were 4 wins behind Geelong who missed out on finals based on head to head.

All of the other teams apart from Sherbrooke will be very competitive in this division with the D-League teams

Both Sherbrooke and Eltham are loosing players due to age and there are no juniors below ready to come in and compete at that level, especially Sherbrooke, would they apply for the second tier?

Werribee, Bulleen, Whittlesea and Hume City are the others.

Great idea, I suspect this will identify those Associations which have been focusing on development rather than recruitment of older players!

There may be a reason for nominating the teams that will possibly have the best chance of success initially, however I think the concept could be a move forward...

Just get a good name. Like "The Victorian Development League" - the "VD League". Wait, maybe that's not so good...

V.B.Y.C.L.

Victorian Basketball Youth Championship League.

Or conversely the V.B.Y.C.L. perhaps?

Makes for a long name tag though...

AKA the Y.C.L.

or Youth League.......

Heard of that one??

YMCA ?

Just make up what it stands for ...

At least then you already have a theme song built in for the new competition.

Not sure how integrated Basketball Victoria are trying to make all their competitions.

But if the junior competition is Victorian Junior Championship League (VJCL) ...

Then making this the Victorian Youth Championship League (VYCL) would be consistent.

Of course this would then frequently get shortened to Youth League ... but everyone still calls the junior version VC as well.

Any name transition will take a bit of time.

Great idea to bring all U23 basketball under one administration, will only further strengthen Victorian Basketball.

Who will decide the top 8 from Big V?

Are the bottom D-League teams any better than the bottom Big V teams? Saw Ballarat during the year, they would have lost to some Big V SYC 2 teams!

The Top 8 will be the finishing order from the SYC1M ladder of 2012 season unless a team from that top 8 requests to drop down.

The teams from Big V: (Unless requested otherwise)
DV
Melb
Ringwood
Hawthorn
Eltham
Geelong
Waverley
Sherbrooke

Teams that miss out are:
Bulleen
Whittlesea
Werribee
Hume City

These bottum teams weren't competitive anyway so best they drop down to a level they can compete on.

You'd think a few of the better players from those teams that don't make it will move to the better teams as that second tier is looking pretty weak even when combined with the SYC2M comp

Half of these top 8 big V YL teams had over 23's last season so its going to impact their ablity to compete. The bottom 4 will struggle again the top 6 SEABL DL teams while the bottom 2 SEABL teams will struggle al together. It will be fun to watch a SEABL club get relegated to Big V YL2 in a few season.
Its going to make for a very interesting couple of seasons and will really stretch some clubs in terms of recruiting and player development.
Hopefull it will also mean that this new U23 comp becomes a real force and not treated like it doesnt matter as some Big V clubs think !!

hume city and bulleen should stay in div 1 because they have a scm team....

Yeh but their teams are no good. Sherbrooke may drop down because they will struggle. Someone may come up.

Don't like the idea of mixed conferences. Should be all in one conference, play each team twice. More double headers, start season earlier. Or play everyone once, home one year, away the next. Longer finals series.

Think that guy above means that Eltham and Sherbrooke had guys who will be too old for next season.

and hume city have good players coming up from under 18s and a very strong core of about 5 players.. they will easily be competitive in div 1 and will win games..

Obviously you don't realise u18s don't impact Youth League too often mate...

They had one good player last year, so unless they get 4 more, they'll still suck

8 from Bigv & D-League makes for the best comp as the team that miss out arent very good...plain & simple!

The better players from those clubs should make the move across to the better programs so they can link in with the comp and have a clear pathway to ABA basketball rather than Big V D1 or D2 which isn't a bettet standard than the new VYC will be. (apart from the odd import)

So the better players from the bottom teams are forced to leave because they wouldn't want to play YL2...

Rhea, that will only happen to 4 teams, who don't really have much there anyway.

Tigers YL that won it only had 3 under 18 guys, 2 of them played for the Aussie under 17's, so only the absolute best under 18's players have an impact on SYC.
