It should be a good season with Adams, Loe and Fotu all looking like they will play good minutes. The number of Division I women is probably as high as it has ever been.

There is also alot of junior college women's players that will be looking to move onto DI schools next year.

The season starts today with Steven Adams Pitt playing in an Exhibition vs Indiana University (PA)

Tall Black Isaac Fotu came off the bench for five points and eight rebounds, but couldn't prevent his University of Hawaii team falling 78-79 in overtime to Illinois, their first loss of the season. The Warriors (3-1) next host North Dakota on Wednesday.

Fellow international Rob Loe also tasted defeat, as St Louis University lost 64-72 to Santa Clara at the Hall of Fame Classic. The Kiwi centre led his team with 13 points (3/6 3pt) and the Billikens (1-1) next host Texas A&M tomorrow.
Unfortunately, St Louis have lost legendary head coach Rick Majerus, who left the team earlier this year for health reasons and has now announced he won’t be back.

Steve Adams and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half, before rallying for a hard-fought 72-62 OT win over Oakland to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Adams had four points, four rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes, and the Panthers (4-0) face powerhouse Michigan in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals at Madison Square Gardens on Thursday.

Hawai`i 58 (5-4) vs Miami 73 (8-1)

For one half, the Warriors looked like they could withstand the force of the Hurricanes, but the second half turned into a different story. Miami opened the second half with a 14-3 run to break open what was a close game in the first half.

Isaac Fotu had 5points 2/5 7rebounds 3assist 1steal in 27minutes of action.

Fotu is doing really well so far this season. Definitely worth keeping an eye on him.

As for Adams, I would be interested in the thoughts of others as to his progress to date in college hoops. I have not yet seen him play a game, but his stats in general appear to be underwhelming for a potential 'one and done' player...

The basketball world got a look at Tai Webster last year and it liked what it saw. Offers from colleges started flowing in and after an enjoyable recruiting process he opted to sign with Big Ten school the University of Nebraska while on an official visit there in December. The Cornhuskers as they are known, are very much a program on the rise and are coached by up and coming first year head coach Tim Miles, they currently sit at 9-6 for the season. Miles knows just how important Tai Webster will be to his team and recruitment experts have begun to cotton on to how exciting of a player this kid really is. ESPN have him ranked as the 29th best point guard in the 2013 class and his emergence led college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla to declare: "I'd be shocked if there were 25 better 17-year-old players in the States than this kid".

prob around the mark so far for a freshman centre in a tough conference but a little under what people were expecting with all the hype.
I think he will live up to the hype eventually but it will come after he is fully comfortable with everything off the court (living in the U.S and the workload with his education) and develops his game under a good Coach in a good program and learns the systems and expands his Basketball I.Q.
The one and done isn't going to happen but I don't think it was ever on the cards with his Minders/Family intentions of him making the most of the educational opportunities from what I have ever read.

He's has been prone to picking up early fouls limiting his minutes and he hasn't been racking up the points but he has been contributing defensively and doesn't take a heap of bad shots. Jamie Dixon by all reports has been happy with his progression and I think if he can keep his grades up and keep progressing, when he finally does declare, he will be ready, and he will go in the first round. I think next season we will start to see the offensive/defensive game that people are hoping for.

Is it the influence of a minder/similar that can prove difficult (there are another couple of cases in AU hoops, right?) or is it more so the fact that the individual is in need of a minder that sets these situations up?

from everything I have ever read and how Steven conducts himself in interviews he is a pretty simple kid from a tough upbringing and still a fresh Maori from Rotovegas in need of positve influences and by all accounts McFadden and his Care Giver in Wellington have been just that and they only care about Stevens best interests (didn't play for the Tall Blacks Olympic Qualifying Tourney instead went to the States early to help him settle and to help qualify academically).
Even in early interviews when he just landed at Pitt and was playing some High School ball, when the "One and done" was ever mentioned to Steven he always down played it and was more focused on getting an education that wouldn't have been available to him in Rotorua.

Being that big men always seem to develop a little later I think he's on a good track.
Fellow Kiwi 7 footer Rob Loe has started to show a little more of what he's capable of after a couple of seasons at College so hopefully Steven will do the same.

Updates on 2 New Zealanders playing Junior College-

Michael Karena is a freshman forward, playing at South Plains College in Texas. This is a top Junior College that sends alot of players to D1 schools, the current team has big men committed to SMU and DePaul.

Karena is averaging 5.3ppg , 2.7 rpg and shoots 68.1% from the field. He has had several 'breakout' games, scoring in double figures, which given the quality of the team and the fact he is only a freshman, suggests he may be a Division 1 player in 2 seasons time.

Jordan Ngatai is a 6'6 foward at Sierra College in the Californian JuCo league. Only a freshman he is scoring 15.1ppg and getting 6.9rpg.

Last year he was committed to Brigham Young-Hawaii but may have had eligibility issues, I have no idea if he is still intending on going there, but I would think that he would be in good position to sign with a Div 1 school next year.

Hawaii improved to 13-9 overall and remained in third place in the Big West Conference at 7-4. It is the first time since the 2003-04 season that the Warriors have won three consecutive road games. Fullerton dropped to 11-11 and is in seventh in the Big West at 4-6 - which includes two losses to Hawaii.

Freshman Centre Steven Adams had 13 points (5/6 from the field and a much improved 3/4 from the freethrow line) 2 rebounds 2 assists and 4 blocks in 29 minutes.

I watched the Pitt vs Cincinnati game and IMO Adams was very good. He may not have had the rebounds, but he did all the dirty work in boxing out and opening the way for his team mates to scoop up the boards.

One thing that is not helping him is that his team mates do not go to him often enough, and having said that, their entry passes to him in the post were not often high quality...

When he got the ball in a decent position in the post nobody for Cincinnati could guard him and it was an all but certain score each time.

I started a new job so haven't got to watch many games of late.

he seems to be steadily improving with each game and they have claimed a couple of decent scalps. I have read that Jamie Dixon would like him to be more selfish offensively but if his team aren't getting him the ball their isn't a whole lot he can do.

Warriors have gone down to UC Davis 89-65
Hawai'i’s "big three" of Vander Joaquim, Christian Standhardinger and Isaac Fotu were basically nullified by a UC Davis zone defense that double-teamed in the low post. They are the team’s top three scorers and rebounders, but they combined for 16 points and 11 rebounds. Standhardinger himself was averaging 22.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game during the previous five-game winning streak.

Isaac Fotu played 13minutes for only 2 points courtesy of freethrows and 2 rebounds 1 assist and 1 block.

Pitt are now ranked #16 and face #18 Marquette next.

Great to have 2 New Zealanders playing in nationally ranked teams getting decent minutes and contributing. Even better that they are both 7ft. Add Pledger to the mix and we have never had deeper stocks at Centre.

The Tall Blacks in about 3-5 years will have some quality bigs. Adams and Pledger at Centre, Fotu and Loe at power foward. Now we just need a couple guards to come along...

If Jackson naturalizes and plays for the Tall Blacks NZ have the potential to do more than just make up the numbers on the world stage and push Australia in qualification series consistently and hopefully secure 2 Oceania berths in all major tournaments.

Cedric Jackson/Tai Webster or Bartlett
Kirk Penney/Cory Webster
Thomas Abercrombie/Leon Henry
Mika Vukona/Rob Loe
Alex Pledger/Steven Adams

there was a passport issue with Isaac Fotu from memory that had him playing as a naturalized player in Fiba tournaments, not sure if it has been rectified so Jackson obviously would be the 1 naturalized player selected.
Put Pledge in front of Adams due to chemistry.
3 legit 7ft on a Tallblacks squad!!

St Louis 24-6 #16 AP Top 25, #16 USA Today Coaches Poll, #17 ESPN Power Rankings

both pretty decent programs with pretty decent shots at progressing deep, not a bad situation and even better for New Zealand's International Prospects down the track with both Players being 7ft and very talented. Hawaii with Fotu was the only other program with an active Kiwi playing decent minutes and they were well off the pace.

How old is Richie Edwards now??

He seems to have bounced around a bit... seemed to be doing OK at Val last year then transferred...

Any ideas what he's up to after college?

I think NBL would be his ceiling..

Edwards is 22 and will finish college when he is 23.

Depending on how he goes next season at Arizona State he could pick up a development player spot at a NBL club.

Terai Sadler has been awarded 1st Team Junior College All-American honours. She averaged 18.6ppg and 9.0rpg for Crowder College.

Milomilo Nanai was also awarded honourable mention honours. She averaged 15.4ppg and 9.1rpg as a freshman at Sheridan College.

I think that 3 of this years NZ junior college women have the potential to transfer to Division 1 schools. Will be interesting to see where they go.
