Crows sign two more basketballers

http://www.afc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/4417/newsid/150857/default.aspx

Jack Osborn: 22 years old, 208cm Tassie boy returning from College

Tim Klaosen: 22, 196cm from Sturt

Anyone know much about these guys? Think they'll be able to make the transition?

Is Osborn a big loss to basketball? Would he have made NBL?

Osborn was signed to gold coast blaze so was good enough to make NBL roster

Another year or two in SEABL and Osborn would have had a good chance of cracking NBL.

Osborn was signed by the Blaze before the went under (well committed), and then worked out with Hawks and also signed as a Development player with the Taipans.

Never heard of the other guy

Osborn has been looked at by adel, crocks, hawks and was signed by the blaze sight unseen. Taipans? I dont think so.

Why do we lose these guys to footy?

Surely it's not just money, is it?

I know the opportunities in basketball are fewer, with a smaller roster and a smaller competition it hurts hoops here in Oz, but like soccer there are many opportunities overseas for our best players...

Good luck to the boys, but sad to see them leaving basketball, many more may follow and this is not great!

Why they change:
-Money
-Popularity
-Roster spots

No brainer unfortunately. They have the opportunity to go straight into being a professional athlete and the possibility of being set up for life financially.

Most of these guys were never going to make it as pros in basketball. All fringe or below. (Osborne may have been exception but his SEABL numbers were average)

Pros

Basketball
- Indoors when it's wet, cold and miserable
- Chance to play internationally
- Can play for your country
- Olympics
- Less chance of serious injury
- Not a collision sport
- Can play well into 30's and beyond
- Can get a degree, scholarship

Cons
Basketball
- Stadiums here are small, crowds not big enough
- corporate dollar is not as high as football or overseas
- competition is small
- opportunities are limited due to number of team and small rosters
- Media coverage is all about footy, cricket, soccer and netball before hoops gets a run

Around 1000 professionals on AFL lists and I suspect the lowest rookie would earn more than most NBL players - certainly much more than a fringe player on a NBL bench. So if they are spotted by a talent scout and offered an opportunity to be a professional sportsman, it would be hard to resist. If it doesn't work out then they are young enough to return to basketball stronger and fitter, and their public profile would also be boosted for other employment opportunuties.

A certain ex-6ers dev player and abl champion mentioned he made more in 6mths playing reserves sanfl than his entire ball career. The move to footy a no-brainer.

Klausen seems to have made a good start at training yesterday. Hope he can catch the different shaped ball as well as he can run
