Baynes assigned to D-League

Despite a decent effort in just his second game, Aron Baynes has been assigned to D-League team the Austin Toros...

From Spurs to Toros for Baynes

Aron Baynes has discovered the reality of life as a Spurs rookie.

Two days after becoming the toast of San Antonio when he put in a solid performance against the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night at AT&T Center the forward-center from Australia was on his way to Bakersfield, Calif., with the Austin Toros, the NBA D-League team owned by Spurs Sports and Entertainment.

he had some time off playing with the visa problems. Would have maybe lost some conditioning off that may be a good way to get some game time up for him.

Could it be that they are throwing him there to learn the game/officiating style before letting him lose on the big stage again. NBA is quite a different game to Euro. Probably just want him to learn that on an easy stage. Yes the conditioning issue is probably valid to.

Its nothing personal to big Baynesy its just to gain experience, NBA is a totally different game to Europe. They did it with Nando De Colo as well, just giving him as much experience as they can. Spurs are classy

Its not that big a deal, he will get more minutes there and should do really well will get him use to the NBA game, he'll be back.

Spurs are the best team in the NBA at using the D League system to get guys minutes/fitness/touch. As stated De Colo and Joseph have spent time (usually 1-2 games max) in the D League and then come straight back and in De Colos case, playing a pretty solid role off the bench. Nothing to worry about for big Baynsey.

Great to see another aussie in the big leagues, playing with such a good organisation will only help him bloom and hopefully have a dominant WC/Olympics for the Boomers.

@Benno I agree with 100% of what you've said in this thread.

But it kinda contradicts your post in the first Baynes thread when you said my suggestion that Baynes might spend some time in D League was stupid:

"The dudes been averaging 13.8 points and 9.8 rebounds in Euro league!! Putting him in D-league would be pretty stupid,"

If Baynes wasn't already penciled in for the next Spurs game after his D League effort, you'd have to think that the injury to Duncan today (left game in Q2 with sprained right ankle and left knee) would make him a near certainty.

Although Spurs next game isn't until Wednesday so a 4 day break might be enough for Duncan.

Recalled from D League

Quite possible that he was assigned purely to get some extra conditioning in before the Spurs rodeo road trip.

Hopefully Baynes gets decent minutes even if Duncan is playing.

In ESPN preview talking about Duncan:
"The 14-time All-Star, however, was shooting jumpers at practice Monday, and the team has yet to say when he is expected to play. One member of the Spurs said he would not be shocked if coach Gregg Popovich played Duncan on Wednesday."

This will be the first of 9 straight road games from the Spurs, btw.

Not the best couple of days for Aussies in the NBA.

Baynes: 11 minutes, 0 points, 1 block, 1 TO & 3 Fouls (hopefully not going to become an issue when he gets more minutes as last game he got 4 fouls in 18 minutes)

Mills: 1 minute, 1 rebound, 2 fouls.

Baynes finished with a +/- of +4, but after he had played 5 minutes he had no stats to his name at all, and yet was +12 so hopefully that means he was contributing off the ball.
