Sixers @ The Gong

Another Friday night and while some punters will be off playing the last game of district for summer season, others will be watching the Sixers take on the Gong, at The Gong.

Wollongong are currently 4th and are only in the four by the length of their talons. The Sixers are in a not so happy place.

Gordie is a coaching master and is more cunning than Field Marshall Montgomery's Fox at a chess playing tournament, so a road win for the Sixers would be sweater than a fishing and croc wrestling trip with Peach. What cunning plan will be hatched to pluck the Hawks?

The Hawks shot the lights out last week against the Crocs with Deleon slicing 10/11 FT's and that pesky Oscar shooting 6/7 from the arc. I can only think of one other Oscar being more dangerous at the moment.

The Sixers got a nice win on the road, albeit against a weakened opponent, but a win is a win. Interesting to note that when Cadee has played well, the team lifts a bit. Marty called him a "slippery player", so will this mean the baby oil will come out pre-game?

There's no reason why the Sixers couldn't pull off an upset win and cut the talons of the Hawks, we just need to outfox the "Red Fox" so he doesn't see the toenail clippers coming.

Both. And considering how unwatchable the 36ers can be at times, it's a shame really. When we were good there were basically no Adelaide telecasts!

Tonight's game is the last time we'll see the 36ers on Australian TV this season. Of course they are on Sky in NZ for next week's game against the Breakers, but we won't get that.

Can we win again without Schenscher? Can Gibbo or Cadee or both stop an in-form Deleon? Will Scott Christopherson finally hit a 3 on the road to add to the one he hit at home against Sydney? Will the real Slim Shady please stand up.....

Heart says Adelaide, head says Wollongong.

Adelaide are paying a generous $2.85 if you are feeling frisky.

Hilariously, the 36ers are still a slim chance of finals if they can win this one. Bookies have them at $501 for the championship...

Imagine if the Sixers snuck into finals, played NZ in the first round, they suffered a mystery bout of food poisoning (95 rugby World Cup) and then we played Perth in the gf winning in front of 12,000. Marty would be elevated as a Sixers legend

I remember at the start of the season checking how many TV games each team had. Sydney/perth were around 18 while Cairns/Townsville had 8 each. Adelaide would have been mid teens from memory.
Side question: how would this effect potential sponsors for the FNQ teams since they get far less national TV broadcasts than other teams?

Maybe that's Clarke's plan all along. Wait for the Blaze to go down, steal all their players, purposely do badly enough to get to $501 to win the championship, bet $1-200k then win every single game from here on.

Championship and the club gets the ultimate pay day becoming super rich securing our future in the NBL and ownership of Adelaide Arena for decades to come. Best three year plan ever.

Man, what a game!

Petrie and Gibson were clutch and DJ played a great game also. For all of Clarke's shortcomings this year, he managed the clock very well down the stretch, called timeouts at the right times to advance the ball giving us a shot at the win.

On the negative side, Crosswell and Christopherson were extremely ugly to watch when they were out there. To see the standard that Malcolm Grant was playing at compared to Christophersen was rather nauseating to see. That Croswell turnover at the end of the 3rd quarter was a massive stuff up that swung the momentum to Wollongong at the start of the 4th after Demos hit that 3 on the 3/4 time buzzer. Veteran point guards should not be giving away soft turnovers on such crucial possessions. I would be trying to give Daly all of Crosswell's minutes if possible - Daly was immoressive in his time on court tonight.

Another gutsy win by the sixers on the road, again, there were many times we could have packed it up and given the game away. The last two wins have showed after a very dissapointing season, this team still has some heart.

It hit the rim, not a turn over, and offensive board in the paint with 4 seconds left. game over.

Not a foul.

Pretty sure it didn't hit the rim, Davidson tapped it before it could hit. It was also a clear foul by Deleon, Weigh went to drive to the basket and Deleon impeded his progress with his hands by reaching in - pretty sure that is a foul. Carfino and Joyce were also of this opinion, just a big brain explosion by Deleon.

The motivation comes from wanting to win for your team mate, your coach and your fans.

Belief is a strange thing, like confidence, it can come and it can go.

I cannot answer why the belief was not there previously.

I can assure you that it was not due to the lack of effort by the coaching staff.

Marty nurtures belief from his players.

When is a travel not a travel?? Have just got through watching the 3rd period on One and have to seriously question Tim Coenraad's dunk. Sure, great move from a guy who was on fire tonight and seriously bad defense (I think be Weigh). But once he stopped dribbling the ball he took 4 steps until he jumped for the dunk. The refs were clearly not looking at his feet on that play because all of them missed it.

As asked, when is a travel not a travel?

Haven't seen the end of the game yet (7:54 to go as I'm typing) but another good road win by the boys tonight. Well done guys.

Its a good point from KingJames. It's not really proper to look at one umpiring decision and say "That ONE" decision cost, the game, not in a game like basketball. Maybe in association football where one penalty kick goal can define a match, but not in a game decided by 80 v 80 scores and ~30 free throws given throughout.

If you accept refs have a success rate of about 90% then if you have 40 fouls a game and 40 near-thing non-calls, you have 8 decisions that are almost inevitably going to be wrong and cost points one way or the other.

Same as there are missed shots up and down a game where, in a tight contest, any one of them may have altered the result, so with calls. People ascribe too much importance to the final moments.

Easy to complain about refs errors but as good a coach as Gordie is he made the biggest one in that game. 3 up with 9 seconds to play in regulation and in the penalty you HAVE to give up a foul with 4 or so to go. The only chance then is a deliberate miss on the 2nd free throws and an "O" board. Far less likely than a made 3. Yes I know the Kings got one off a deliberate miss against the Breakers but as I said far less likely than a made three.

I was watching the game screaming at the TV for Oscar to foul Petrie. I guess you could add Oscar's stepping back to defend the dribble penetration into the paint that allowed Petrie the room to get his three off as another mistake far worse than any a ref made.
Great shooting at thge end of regulation by Adelaide but the Hawks and the coaching staff threw that one away.

Is it my imagination?, or do we seem to have played better basketball all season without Schenscher.

Although the Hawks still got penetration, we managed to fill holes at times and get turnovers/defensive boards.

Also agree that the game looks a lot better when players have a licence to just create/shoot and not continually be bogged down by too much "structure".

Rhythm Willie, that could be right but there is other factors as well.

* The Team has no pressure on them anymore as the season is over
* The coach is playing Crosswell and Christoperson less.
* As a result of playing some players less the main players are getting more minutes giving them a better chance to produce more (Something Clarke should have worked out in year 1)
* Daly seems to be making the offense flow nicely
* Petrie playing great

Having said that in both games we were in losing position and had to win in remarkable ways. Good to see us get some of the luck for a change. Regardless of how we won the last two, the players confidence is up now so maybe we will lose the title of easy beats.

But the guy they put on missed the 2 freethrows and we couldn't have won from 7 down .
Seems we've only got one guy who can play the three spot , but he's more of a 4 ,a brilliant shooter but guarding not his scene , so they went at him and scored easily. They didn't guard Croswell .

One little peccadillo shouldn't cause too much harm, but I'm glad he was offering his season's shoes and not another item of apparel.

On a lighter note, what a great win. I was watching the replay and the big difference to me from other games was the penetration into the key by the Sixers. They looked like they were an offensive threat and on a mission each possession. If they are going to fluff around, better get them some rabbit ears.

As for Peach, well, I've rung Nick Offerman and organised a trip to his woodshop where we can eat bacon wrapped prawns and bacon wrapped turkey legs. What a game.

Have a look at what Daly brings in 12 minutes compared to Cadee in 30 minutes. Daly deserves more court time however political Marty just doesn't allow it.

Having Crosswell anywhere near the three point line is like having a defensive rest for the opposition. Good win on the road. I am not sure if comments made about a free style of offence supports the coach. Are the players saying they have decided to ditch the plays that don't work and just play their own game?

"They did'nt guard Crosswell".

Teams basically sag off him as he does not seem to have any sort of outside shot. Shoots too flat anyway even around the foul line. Not a way I would coach juniors to shoot.

I agree that Daly is looking the goods and needs more court time, switched to watch the game in the 3rd quarter, can't remember Cadee scoring or penetrating , we won largely as a result of Gibson's and Petri's 3's, some good defence and Wolongongs brain fades.

Time to give Jan some more minutes too.

Just of note, Peach is averaging 19.5 ppg as a starter this season. In all games he's averaging 10.8 which makes me wonder why we haven't had him starting more and having either DJ or (more likely) Luke coming off the bench.

Good to see that the over-complicated offensive structure took a back seat to letting the talent of players like Gibbo run the floor. When we play a more free flowing style we look a much better side with the ball in hand. Defense was a bit off last night though, Weigh in particular had a bad night.

One question I have about the stats though, DJ clearly blocked a shot in the 4th last night, Brendan Joyce even commented that it was a good play from him. Funny thing is that he isn't credited with a blocked shot from the game.....

The players aren't passing to Christopherson when he's open because he can't seem to deliver in games. In practice he may be showing why we actually recruited him, but in games he's throwing up more junk than you'd find at the Wingfield tip. That being the case, why would they pass the ball to him? They've lost confidence in him it would seem, and seemingly so has Clarke who only played him for 4:52 last night.

Even if we don't win over the Breakers at the Vector Arena next week, I hope we give them a damn good fright.

Daly was good in his minutes, but Cadee had a pretty good game too. Similar players in many ways, but Daly seems a bit more prepared to push the tempo which I like. They both compliment Gibbo on court pretty well, but we would probably struggle if they were both on at the same time for any extended period.

Crosswell is more confusing. Not sure what his role is. He is not really taking advantage of veteran smarts (that momentum killing turnover in the dying seconds of the third was abysmal). He just gets to play loose man in offense he is given so little respect by opposition teams, but that seems to be creating very opportunities for him or the team.
