Possible Kings move to Homebush

Due to the Sydney Entertainment Centre/Convention Centre redevelopment the Kings will likely have to move to the State Sports Centre Homebush for 2013/14.

What are the likely impacts of the move. Will it see a reduction in member numbers? Will corporate box holders and sponsors drop off due to location and inferior facilities? Will it engage a new fan base if they are located in the West?

it can only hold 5,000, that would mean it would be then end of getting some big crows like they did this season.

What about moveing to the All phones arena? it holds 17,000, and moveing to that would increase intrest and attendance because it is such a big ( and a newer) stadium.
but that would obviously cost alot more to play in.

From austadiums.com:

"The venue is due to be demolished in 2013 to make way for a new integrated Entertainment & Convention Centre which is expected to open in late 2016."

This is really bad for the kings, that is alot of seasons to be played somewhere else, and haveing a max of 5,000 at the state centre could mean loosing money?

ALL PHONES AREANA!

However, after the New entertainment centre is built, having a bigger and the best stadium will be a big plus for the kings

NYC_LGK27, seriously calm down.

Moving to All phones arena would bankrupt the Kings. Deal with it.

OP raised some good points re: engaging a new fanbase, sponsors etc.

NYC_LGK27.. Getting a bit carried away there!

I posted this on ATF about a year or more ago. At that stage the Kings had no solid plans to move to Homebush or anywhere else.

There was a rumour that the Kings were allowed to play at the SEC until the new stadium was built (apparently it was going to be built next door, wiping out parking but Kings wouldn't have to re-locate). Heal tweeted it and then it was re-tweeted by the Kings, however I spoke to the Kings from office who advised that wasn't the case & it was a misunderstanding, someone took something the wrong way. The last time I spoke to anyone from the Kings front office about it (2-3 weeks ago) they had said that there are a few options they're looking at. Homebush being one, Allphones Arena NOT being one due to their history and it's size/cost. But nothing was close to being finalised.

The Kings want to stay where they are for as long as humanly possible.

From what I know the developers are waiting for X amount of apartments to be sold in one of the new high risers before they can fund the new entertainment centre.

And All Phones Arena is used for international tours, conventions etc. Trust me, if the Kings moved there, with the high running costs & advertising costs they enforce for events held there, they would go under mid-season.

go homebush... pack it out and then have 1 or 2 blockbusters each year at the bigger stadium...

yeah thats a good idea ^ if they played at homebush all season, but maybe a single playoff game in all phones arena? or if they made the grand final?

One question: when the new entertainment centre is complete, it will be alot bigger and newer, so will it be more expensive for the kings to play in it?

They will move to the State Sports Centre. All Phones like people has said is too expensive & too big for the Kings.

The SSC is quite a cheap venue so even though they won't be able to fill as many seats as at the SEC, they would actually come close to turning more coin over per-game as they do at the SEC.

It's not all bad for a short term issue with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour.

If past history is an indication, they will have significant difficulty moving their crowd (should I say sold tickets) to Homebush.

The State Sports Cente is the obvious choice. I think 1 (maybe 2) games at Allphones could be worth ago. Any more is too risky. Who are the biggest draw cards? Maybe do a deal to get a discount for traveling Wollongong members. Is there any chance of an overlap with the Easter show to bring in more fans?

I also think its an opportunity for the kings to expand their brand. They could have 1 game in each of Newcastle and Canberra and offer region specific memberships. Offer buses etc for Sydney based Kings fans to help fill the joints.

Kings believe they are staying at SEC until 2015 and then moving into new stadium built next door.

NYC_LGK27, the new entertainment centre will be smaller than the current one, not bigger.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Kings to follow the Breakers example if they have to move to the 5,002 seat State Sports Centre.

The Breakers currently play half of their games in the 4,400 seat NSEC, but also play some games and playoffs at the 9,300 seat Vector Arena. The Kings could possibly play the majority of their season games at the SSC, but play blockbusters (against Melbourne & NZ) and playoff games at the Allphones Arena, which according to its website can actually hold 21,000. The spectator and corporate facilities at the former Olympic venue would shit all over what the SSC can offer.

However, like everything, especially in this league, money will probably be the deciding factor. Even a small number of games at Allphones might be too much for the Kings to afford.
