Sixers Feedback

A suggestion was put forward that Isaac could put forward some Q's for the Silver Fox for Wednesday. I am proposing you have your say by filling in the gaps below:

1. What do you want to see more of from the Sixers?
2. What do you want to see less of from the Sixers?
3. What are the Sixers doing right that you're happy with?
4. What do the Sixers need to stop doing?
5. What do the Sixers need to improve on?
6. What's more important. Winning or a night's entertainment.
7. If the Sixers just did one thing right, what would it be?

I'm going to give the short answers rather than write an essay for each, though one or two will have more than a one word answer.

1. Wins.
2. Losses.
3. $10 game tickets. The increase in crowds since they did that says a lot.
4. Getting imports who stink up the joint come game time.
5. Marketing. Other than the TV ads on 10/One/11 and a bit in the 'Tiser, there isn't much. How about something like getting a weekly spot on the FiveAA Sports Show a-la the Crows and Power?
6. Winning, but good entertainment never goes astray either.
7. Bring Brad Newley and Joe Ingles home to play starting in 2013-14.

R U living in "Dream Time", Toft, or just stupid? Nothing will save the 36ers. What Adelaide needs is another team and organisation. Let the 36ers flounder in "Never Land". After all these years, do you still think some super hero can make a cherry pie out of marshmellos and grease?

Sixers could more easily collate responses by setting up at SurveyMonkey and emailing the link to members. In fact, they should almost do it 1-2 times a year by default.

Been thinking about this from the POV of a non-36ers (Taipans) fan. Not suggesting that the Taipans are necessarily the best-supported team in the league, but they do pretty well considering Cairns only has 160k-ish people. Never watched basketball in Adelaide but there are a couple of things that the 36ers could maybe heed of they want to get out of what seems like a bit of a death spiral:

Taipans are rarely out of the local newspaper and are on the local news two or three evenings a week. This may be a reflection of the fact that *nothing* often happens up here and the Cairns Post/Win 7 (who are sponsors) need content but they're in the local media all the time.

People in the community talk basketball. They may not go to games often (if at all) but still take pride in the Taipans winning. I know a lot of people who won't go to games more than once a season (if at all) but who are still interested enough to have it on their radar. As the guy who services the aircon at work said to me on Friday: "it's not really my game but I love to see them win"

You can take a family of 4 to a game for $50. Platinum/Gold seats usually have more hardcore fans but the cheap seats are packed with families with kids, teenagers and students. Kids go along, maybe see their schoolfriends, parents get to skull a few cans of piss and enjoy the show.

The team are out shilling in the community *constantly*. They do tours of local schools for miles around, give away free kids tickets, go to council all the local events with the free throw van and generally just put themselves about. At the carols in the park even half the team were there in Taipans-themed orange Santa hats making fools of themselves.

The club *is* a club; people feel part of something. I went up to the casino at 4:30 on Thursday with about a hundred other people to watch the NZ game live on the big screen. Most of the management, marketing and admin staff and one or two of the development players were mixed in there too. Great atmosphere and a real wide mix of people there.

So I might be out of line saying this but from what I've seen on these forums there are a lot of people who want the 36ers to revert to being an all-conquering team without really figuring out how you build support or a financial basis for doing this. Seems to me they've got to get more people emotionally invested in the club and the sport for the 36ers to have this kind of a future.

1. Cheaper tickets to home games.
2. Less Import changes.
3. Being a close knit group that has support from top to bottom in the organisation.
4. Let Mitch Creek have the Twitter password.
5. The Sixers need better imports.
6. Entertainment is more important.
7. The players and Daryl showing their full support for the coaching staff. (closely connected to Point 3.)

1.Stability in front office management. We had Ben Fitz as CEO when SOS first formed who left suddenly. Leanne was then appointed and again has left after a short period of time in the postion. The ownership group also seems to have dwindled over the last 3 years creating uncertainty which cannot be good when trying to attract corporate sponsors, players, new fans etc

Communication from the coaching group to the fans and media has been below average for a while now creating a lot of negative speculation. As well as being a good coach the coaching group need to have the skill set to engage the media and fans and to help promote the club.

As Isaac mentioned above - regular online surveys to the fans so the club can be proactive rather than reactive in making changes if needed.

Re'engage the clubs legends such as Maher, Al, Davis, Smyth, Brooks, Sapwell, McKay etc Get these guys to game nights and get them involved in functions, trainings etc to try and get the culture of the club back. The fans love these guys and they are all passionate about the club.

2.Sunday afternoon games. I understand this may be somwwhat out of the 36ers control however I would like the club to lobby the NBL for the majority of their games on Saturday nights then Friday nights.

3.Trying to introduce new fans to the game through online discounts to fill the stadium. Getting the Allstar game to Adelaide this season. Regular email and social media communication has been good.

4.Stop having a large exodus of staff and players (especially imports) each season. We need to work out our core group, sign them up and add role players and quality imports around them. I also feel we have not had balanced teams over the last 3 years. I personally would go with a good core group of 8 players given we only play 40 mins and round out the squad with locals like Daley, Pero etc who are passionate South Aussies who have a crack but have an 8 man rotation. The players need consistent court time to get into a role and get their confidence.

6.A few more wins would be good but a night out at the 36ers is a good night out. If we lost and we good see improvement, development and effort I am sure the majority of fans would be happy. The issue is the same mistakes, lack of structure, random sub patterns, import selections etc that cause the frustration after 3 years. This will be our 2nd wooden spoon in 3 years and the fans understand that we have put together a very talented roster that should be playing better than we have.

7. Try and secure a long term sponsor like we had in the past such as West End, Pura Milk or approach Coopers, one of the local credit unions, a university like Perth, a mining company etc.

Show some consistency on the court as well as the front office. A a clear plan and stick to it to rebuild the club and communciate it to the fans. Target the South Aussies (e.g Madgen, Oscar, Ingles, Newley) and try and get them home. Recruit Aussies with some mongrel like Petrie, Gibbo, Creek that never give up as the fans see and appreciate the effort even in a loss.

1. Accountability, heart and toughness. That applies to front office, coaching and players. No excuse type culture. Use criticism to fire up on court and not online like some of the mentally weak players that have led us to the bottom of the ladder. More players with Petrie and Sapwell like attitude and less Cadee/DJ type players even if such players have less talent. A coach with some level of emotion wouldn't go astray.

2. Less sulking and selfishness. Harden up. You are professional athletes. We have players who clearly play for their stats and not to win. Also, less interstate recruits. Lets get back to the 36ers actually representing SA. Might mean guys play for the jersey as opposed to their name on their back. What do you expect when you recruit DJ and Weigh. They came here for better opportunities to put up bigger individual numbers.

3. Not intentionally being negative but this is hard to answer. I don't know what is going on financially but you can't help but notice no naming rights sponsor and the corporate boxes look empty. However, I agree that I liked how efforts were made to fill the stadium. It was great when the district kids and the kids from the holiday bball camps filled out the areas behind the baskets and actually made some noise. They also reduced the average age of attendees from 70 to 50. Some of the 70 year olds actually brought ear plugs for use when the junior bballers were cheering. Amazing. Might not make much money from the kids but atmosphere was better for me (don't know about the 70 year olds though). Some of these kids and/or their parents might buy tickets in future so good investment.

4. Stop being boring. I don't agree that it is all about winning and winning cures all. Ken Cole brought more media attention to the 36ers than Clarke did in 3 years. Create some drama, talk trash via the media (with the opposition not your own fans), create some rivalries. Encourage personalities not robot drones. If Melbourne had played the 36ers with Hodge again after the foot stomping incident we would have sold out AAMI Stadium let alone Adelaide Arena. Obviously recruiting two entertaining exciting imports goes a long way. Win lose or draw watching Robert Rose was always worth the price of admission for me. Never left a game that Rose played as disappointed as I do now. Played with heart as well. Same applies re Darnell Mee and Farley (and Davis and Green before them).

5. You get a hard nosed coach who knows how to use the media and pick imports that goes a long way. Media savvy coach results in more paper space and tv time. Exciting imports mean more casual fans wanting to go to games to see a few dunks and an import pg break some ankles.

6. Entertainment. This will translate to ticket sales. The more financial we are and exciting then the more likely we are of attracting a further 1 or 2 players required to contend.

7. Get the coach right. Then domino effect applies. Good coach recruits good team (and imports) that are exciting ... And win. Learn from the past and don't give anyone (other than Goorjian) a three year contract.

1. What do you want to see more of from the Sixers?

More personalitys, from the coach through to the players and everyone in between.

2. What do you want to see less of from the Sixers?

Excuses, Marty Clarke, losses

3. What are the Sixers doing right that you're happy with?

very little

4. What do the Sixers need to stop doing?

Picking up dud imports. I think we now need to go back to the old days where you built the team around the imports.. they are simply flashier and more appealing to watch

5. What do the Sixers need to improve on?

Everything to be frank, they need to be in the medias eye more and it doesnt neccesarily have to cost much to do that. they need to be more entertaining in all facets...

6. What's more important. Winning or a night's entertainment.

A nights entertainment

7. If the Sixers just did one thing right, what would it be?

picking up Anthony Petrie

1. What do you want to see more of from the Sixers?

On court - Fun
Off court - just more sixers. there isnt enough exposure. thats partly due to the press in SA and partly the club not doing enough to get itself out there.

2. What do you want to see less of from the Sixers?

Really just the coaching staff at the moment

3. What are the Sixers doing right that you're happy with?

The game night product is ok i reckon. it's usually a pretty good arvo/night to go to.

4. What do the Sixers need to stop doing?

picking unispiring imports. i thought last season was ok with Warren and Simpson. they both had a bit of X factor. other than that though they've been a bit vanilla

5. What do the Sixers need to improve on?

on court excitement.

6. What's more important. Winning or a night's entertainment.

entertainment. if there's exciting play, people will go. i dont buy it that winning is everything. it has to be fun to watch. right now all our best players are very good players, but none have the inclination to try anything spectacular.

7. If the Sixers just did one thing right, what would it be?

athletic, highlight reel import. i know if they're super athletic and skilled they're probbly playing for better money somewhere else, but if you get the right mix of players it doesnt matter that your 2 guard is a poor defender or your 3 or 4 cant knock outside shots. we need someone marketable with a bit of flair.

I note a trend towards 'entertainment'. Important to be clear what is meant. Are we talking entertainment on court, i.e. entertaining game style and players, or more clutter around the game - like Hans and the girls Saturday?

I favour the first; not the second, but that's not the issue. Need to be clear or [assuming the push is for more entertaiing basketball] we could end up with more boring ball and heaps of peripheral distractions and be told that's what we asked for.

Entertaining team and game style.

Replace Cadee, DJ and SC with Homicide and Dunigan and how much more exciting is that team?

Get a coach who can manage egos and let them play.

That team would sell more tickets than the current version.
