nah that's an error, I thought of Ricky early on in the list but somehow forgot to type his name

He is there for sure, instead of Shane Heal

Another up there is Paul Rogers

I think my top 10 is close to on the money though, right?

Depends if you count guys who were amazing players but only stayed for a year or thereabouts and therefore don't have much of a legacy in the league.

Leroy Loggins is still right at or near the top even though he was well into his 30's by 1990. That guy had amazing longevity. Brilliant scorer and defender. No one played both ends like he did.

Anon - re Patty Mills, see Mick's comment and note Mills didn't even play a full season

If we go down the path of one or most of one season players who dominated then left, you get a somewhat different list. You have to think of including unstoppable players like Chris Williams, Tim Dillon, Doug Overton, Julius Hodge etc. Problem is, we don't know if they would have remained unstoppable, as Jackson has proved to be, but other players like Joe Hurst and, to some extent, Derek Rucker proved not to be.

In answer to the original question, I can't stop at 10. There are too many ties.

Derek Rucker was pretty unstoppable right through until he left the Suns. Age slowed him, nothing else really did. Look at those stats from his years as a Sun/Falcon/Bullet. Pretty amazing stuff.

What do you get if you break it down by position? It seems like we have a real concentration in the PG / SG / SF spots, but not too many in the PF / C spots.

Was Bradtke the best C? Was Gaze or Rucker the best PG? Was Penney the best SG?

Derek Rucker's only average year was his second one. That was mainly a huge drop off from the 1990 year when he was MVP. He came back into the league as a much better allround player a few years later. Rucker at his best was a far better player than Patty Mills.

Put Derek Rucker in his prime against todays imports he would dominate most of them

So tough... like the current Triple J poll. 1990 was the first year I started following the NBL. I put a premium on NBL success too... there have been some great players like Ray Owes & Doug Overton, but they stayed only for a season or two.

Okay here's mine:
Steve Woodbery
Ricky Grace
Andrew Gaze
Brett Maher
Mark Bradtke
Rob Rose
Andrew Vlahov
Darryl McDonald
Shane Heal
James Crawford

I did have Loggins in there, but took him out. He undoubtedly is an NBL great, but his best years & championships were in the 80's. The D-Train sure was great, but wasn't here long either (& when he came back to the Bullets, his best years were behind him).

As Bullets fan from 1990, it hurt a lot to list so many Wildcats players; but their record stands. I loved Derek Rucker... and to be sure, it was because of his electric play that got me hooked on a BBall. He didn't have the wins unfortunately.

I loved watching Rucker play but Ricky Grace toweled him up almost every time they played on each other. Thats why i chose to leave him out of my list with ricky in there.

I agree with the point about factoring in longevity in the league when choosing an all time list. Considering omitting Jackson purely for this reason.

It doesn't sit right with me that i dont have scott fisher and mark bradke in but its impossible to narrow it down to only 10.

From all the comments above, the players mentioned several times:

Darryl McDonald
Rob Rose
James Crawford
Leroy Loggins
Ricky Grace
Andrew Gaze
Brett Maher
Derek Rucker
Mark Bradtke
Mark Davis
Shane Heal
Al Green
Andrew Vlahov
Cedric Jackson
Dwayne McClain
Lenard Copeland

Single mentions:

Brad Newley
Butch Hayes
Chris Anstey
Chris Jent
Chris Williams
CJ Bruton
Darnell Mee
Ebi Ere
Jo Ingles
John Rillie
Kirk Penney
Paul Mayley
Paul Reese
Paul Rogers
Sam Mckinnon
Scot Fisher
Steve Woodbery
Terry Dozier

For my 2 cents, the final contenders to be discussed are:

1. Brett Maher
2. Mark Bradtke
3. Mark Davis
4. Rob Rose
5. Darryl McDonald
6. Andrew Gaze
7. Shane Heal
8. Al Green
9.CJ Bruton
10. Sam Mckinnon

Andrew Vlahov
James Crawford
Leroy Loggins
Ricky Grace
Derek Rucker
Cedric Jackson

I think there needs to be at least 100 games of service played as well, maybe 200?

Perhaps 5 seasons or more to make main list and a separate list for one or two season wonders for example Overton or Chris Williams. I like jacks selections

Overton was quite simply superb in his year in the NBL. He was every bit as good as Grace, possibly better, we didnt get to find out long term because he made a living in the NBA.

Thanks everyone whilst I loved Marcus Timmons, Mike Mitchell, Bruce Bolden, Leon Trimmingham, Tony Ronaldson, Chris Anstey and Melvin Thomas, the fact they weren't mentioned just adds to the greatness of those listed.

I personally loved Steve Woodberry's game and the defensive skills of David Van Dyke and think Kirk Penney doesn't belong but maybe time will change that
