Andrew Bogut tweets about Markovic situation.

Steve wasn't fired, he decided to leave the club after they weren't paying the money due.
Anyone, no matter the job would make the same decision...

Interesting to read that @kkradnickikg claim they fired @steviemarc10 ! Being behind 5 months in payments might be the reason why HE LEFT!

Bogut and Markovic have the same agent. Obviously there is validity to the comment...

The media always follow with what the respective club reports!

I think everyone read between the lines on this one and figured it out. Why else would a basketball player refuse to enter a game?

Good to know for sure though that he's coming back to the NBL without any questions hanging around about this.

Glad that was clarified. I Don't think the certain NBL clubs have the greatest reputation for always paying players on time either.

In other news, I didn't know Bogut was back on twitter

He started to look at Australia as soon as there was issues with his pay a couple of months ago. But good to see him back!

I've been told a lot of horror stories about Euro teams.. Players not being paid unless they get 20/5/5 in a game + the win. Bradtke said something along the lines of he heard he was about to be released, asked the team, team denied it and then released him 2 days later only to back track and ask if he could play 1-2 more games. Mark said yes, played the two games and they didn't even pay him for it.

Yeah, NBL pays issues are pretty minor compared to some of what you hear of in Europe, and it is getting worse with their economy in such a sorry state.

Bradtke lost a lot of money going to Europe, a whole lot of money. He didn't get paid for a lot of his time with Olympiakos, not did they reimburse his flights despite telling him to fly himself and his family over first/business class (I can't remember which one). On top of that, because he voided his current NBL contact, when he came back, he lost about $100k per annum as the maximum player salary limit had just come in. Overall, not a good experience for the big fella. And that's dealing with one of the biggest, most successful clubs in Europe, so you can only imagine what goes on with some of the smaller ones!

He should take them to the BAT. Basketball Arbitral Tribunal.

Get his money, and the other team have to pay Tribunal costs.

5 months pay is quite a lot!
That's nearly half an annual salary!

Problem is a lot teams will lose arbitration and still not pay, or pay a small amount as a first 'instalment'.

recently there was such a backlog of cases that teams in Europe were deliberately using this technique to save money

1. dont pay import
2. import eventually works out he is getting shafted so quits or refuses to play until paid
3. club "sacks" import
4. import takes club to arbitration
5. club refuses to clear player to next team or job until arbitration is finalised
6. player either drops case or accepts smaller payment in order to gain clearance as arbitration was taking 12 months for a case to be heard.

It will only get worse in Europe with the way things are heading.

Over the years NBL clubs have had issues with paying on tim but that said 99 time out of 100 they eventully get paid.

Could be good news for our league maybe? Imports might prefer taking the smaller salary on offer in the NBL, rather than a big euro contract that might not be honoured?

That is the reason we get such good imports here - lifestyle, weather, fast league, good standard, less chance of being sacked or not paid than Europe, welcoming people and good club cultures.

Go the NBL, maybe going off to Europe isn't so attractive after all. Now to discourage them from America...
