WNBL 2013/14 schedule released

The 2013/14 Women's National Basketball League season will tip-off on October 4 this year, headlined by a blockbuster Grand Final rematch between reigning champions Bendigo Spirit and the Townsville Fire on opening night.

Basketball Australia today released the full 2013/14 WNBL schedule, which features all nine teams playing 24 home-and-away games throughout the regular season.

Opening night will see Townsville host Bendigo at the Townsville RSL Stadium as the Fire look to settle the score following their Grand Final defeat at the hands of the Spirit, who claimed the WNBL premiership following a thrilling 71-57 win during last season’s title game.

Easily the most exciting addition to the WNBL this season will be the much anticipated return of international basketball superstar Lauren Jackson, who will suit up for the Canberra Capitals as they take on the Sydney Uni Flames on their home court at the AIS Arena on Saturday 5 October.

On Saturday night, the Adelaide Lightning will host the West Coast Waves at Adelaide Arena, while Dandenong Rangers host the Logan Thunder at Dandenong Stadium - with both games tipping off at 7:30pm.

Capping off round one, the Sydney Uni Flames face a first-up road double as they head south to play the Melbourne Boomers (formerly Bulleen) at the State Basketball Centre at Knox, with the Melbourne Boomers having this week announced their new name, venue and colours.

The Bendigo Spirit will raise their championship banner in front of their home crowd at the Bendigo Stadium in round two, when they take on Adelaide at 7:30pm on Friday 11 October.

The 2013/14 regular season will boast 19 rounds, running through until Saturday 15 February 2014.

The 2014 WNBL Finals Series will commence on Saturday 22 February, with the Preliminary and Grand Final games to take place in early March.

KK got off her arse this morning and did something! Maybe trying to deflect some of the damage to the game she has done this week?

meo - yes

This was reported in yesterday's Advertiser as well. I couldn't connect to the Advertiser article (I haven't registered) but it should be the same as this one in the Herald-Sun - http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/basketball/adelaide-lightning-to-play-six-double-headers-with-sixers/story-fni2u9cl-1226686503269

Relevant quote is "While the NBL draw is yet to be finalised - NBL Pty Ltd still working on its ultimate fixture with free-to-air broadcaster Network 10 - the current provisional draw matches 36ers games with the Lightning on October 19, November 3, November 22, December 15, January 4 and January 18."

No Jackson for this season:

Basketball superstar Lauren Jackson has terminated talks with Canberra and will not play in the Women's National Basketball League this summer after the Capitals failed to meet a contract deadline imposed by her management.

Jackson insisted the breakdown in talks would not harm her ongoing relationship with the Capitals. The 32-year-old confirmed she would still honour a deal to return to Canberra in late-2014 and play another two seasons.

But Jackson admitted she was disappointed the Capitals had not been able to finalise an extended deal with for the 2013-14 season, and she will now explore opportunities overseas.
