New ABC TV deal for WNBL, Opals and Boomers

Basketball Australia today announced an exciting new agreement with the ABC that will see expanded coverage of the 2013/14 Women's National Basketball League season, as well as the Jayco Australian Opals and Australian Boomers road to the 2014 World Championships.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the WNBL will expand its Saturday afternoon coverage to a two-hour timeslot, with action tipping off at 3:00pm nationally.

The ABC and Jayco Australian Opals continue their long-standing relationship under the new agreement, with all Opals games played in Australia to be broadcast on free-to-air television.

In a coup for Australian basketball fans following on from the success of the FIBA Oceania Championships, the ABC will also expand their coverage to include all Australian Boomers games on home soil.
In a further boost for national team fans, the ABC will endeavour to provide additional coverage of Opals and Boomers games played overseas in the lead-up to the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women and 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The 2013/14 WNBL season will see a host of Opals stars and WNBA imports headline what promises to be an action-packed campaign.

Under the new agreement WNBL fans will see:

1. One game a week shown in full at 3:00pm nationally on ABC’s free-to-air TV channel, ABC1, with the a number of games going LIVE into Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and ACT;
2. The expanded two-hour time slot will feature increased analysis and coverage of the competition;
3. All WNBL finals will be broadcast in full also on ABC 1, and
4. Games on-demand through ABC's popular catch up channel iView for up to 14 days after broadcast.

Sounds good. Maybe the ABC is where the NBL should be looking at once the Ten deal ends, as they seem to be quite supportive of basketball lately.

I realise the ABC has a goodwill commitment to Women's sport, but to see Boomer's games shown gives me a bit of confidence that goodwill will be extended to the NBL.

Given the NBL breakaway from Basketball Australia, perhaps the NBL may not be on ABC any time soon?

Re the WNBL - isn't this just a return to what they had a couple seasons ago before they cut the full 2-hour replays down to one hour?

Be good to see more opals and boomers matches too.

Yes, WNBL-wise this is nothing more than a return to the previous status quo. I guess the "landmark" part of it is the Boomers/Opals part.

Happy to have full WNBL games back though. The 1 hour version was really ordinary to watch. Forced me to watch their live webcast a few times, the quality of which was awful.

The absolute kicker for this will be if the Boomers games that they show are also on iView to watch back at your leisure.

They will be Rick. Though the stuff only goes on to iview for a couple of weeks, not forever.

Any IT gurus out there that could possible work out a way to download the files from iview, I would be appreciative!
