New Zealand v Dongguan

Game 1 is on, and after the Breakers jumped out to a 15-point lead in the second term it looked as if they would finally get a win this pre-season.

But behind Donte Greene, who has 25p at 57% at half-time, the Leopards charged back to only be 51-49 down at the long break. Abercrombie and Vukona have 11p each for NZ.

Looks like another fast-paced high-scoring game, I think I can get used to these! Breakers shooting 68% from the field and Leopards 50%.

At the game!

Greene is going nuts.

Vukona using his strength very well against much physically weaker opponents.

I know its only pre season but am a bit concerned about what impact Bruton will have this year.

Limited minutes and impact tonight thus far. Not sure if thats a plan or whether his knees arent entirely healthy.

Webster looking nice once again. Similar to Goulding in that he can really create his own shot (1 dribble pullup) easily.

Dont worry about CJ in September. If he's still like that in March start to get concerned!

Kerron Johnson looking like a good pick up, shoots at a good clip and 5 assists so far and 3 rebounds is good.

MACDUB it looks like Abercrombie is being very aggressive getting to the line, is that the reality? If so, good to see.

I dont think theyve actually signed Greene for the season, just this trip. Does anyone know? If so, he is putting on a pretty good audition for other CBA teams. When did he become a knockdown 3p shooter?!

Dongguan will be ruing not having Chinese refs for this game, cos it's right around this stage of the game they usually come into their own

Haha! Mind you, the refs are seeming a bit foreign to the Breakers at the moment!

Breakers much better adjusting defensively thus far.

Abercrombie is been very aggressive. Certainly benefiting from the new way the game is called. Been to the FT Line plenty of times!

Green couldnt keep up that pace, going 4/13 in the second half, and the Breakers ran out 114-93 winners.

Abercrombie had 26p on 6/8, 4/6 3p and 10/10 FT, along with 4r and 3s. Johnson had 18p on 5/9, 9a and 6r, Webster 17p on 3/4 3p, Pledger 16p and 10r, Lazare 13p, 7r, 2a and 2s, Vukona 11p on 4/4 and 5r.

Greene still had 'Brad Hill-like' numbers! He finished with 41p on 12/27, 4/10 3p and 13/14 FT, 5r and 2a. Former junior national team players Quan Gu had 15p on 6/10.

Mika Vukona fouled out in under 17mins, but was defending Greene.
Darnell Lazare ended up playing just over 23 mins and had 4 fouls and Truman played 10mins as backup to Pledger who played just shy of 30mins.
Pledger and Truman managed a pair of fouls between them.
No Breakers had any foul issues apart from the PF's who had Greene to deal with so maybe they will not struggle to make the appropriate adjustments defensively after all.

Really liked the Freethrow stats. 4x Breakers shot 100% from the stripe (Webster 2/2, Abercrombie 10/10, Lazare 3/3 and Pledger was 4/4) and only Vukona shot 50% (3/6) and Kerron Johnson went 8/12.

Breakers just need to cut down on the turnovers (14 for the game).

Corletto only one foul. Playing netball rather than D?

NZ wont be too fussed with 14 turnovers, they averaged 13 last season and 15 the year before.

From memory they had 12 by some point in the third quarter yesterday though, so wont be wanting to repeat that. It sounds like Goorjian has Dongguan playing some pretty aggressive D, surprise surprise!

Yeah, the Breakers have been the type of high-risk high-team.

Their turnovers haven't been a problem for the past 3 seasons because they had/have guys like Vukona, Braswell, Ced and Boucher who have generally gotten back just as many, if not more, than what the team have up

I agree Paul that 14 turnovers in 40mins isn't that bad for NZ but the Chinese capitalized on them and turned a lot of them into points and probably making it a lot closer than what it needed to be.
Vukona and Lazare were among the worst offenders but I expect those two to be among the teams best by the time the season rolls around.

Breakers still have plenty of outside threats with Abercrombie, Corletto, Webster & Bruton all deadly opening up the lanes for Pledger, Vukona & Lazare

Im not disagreeing with you really. In the first 24mins the Breakers had 12 turnovers and only led 64-61, with Dongguan getting 21 points off turnovers.

In the final 16mins NZ only had two turnovers and outscored Dongguan 50-32.
