Wollongong Hawks release import Durrell Summers

The Wollongong NRE Hawks have today released American import Durrell Summers from his season contract with the club.

Summers advised the club upon arrival last month that he was working through previous matters with his agent, including his contract with the NRE Hawks, admitting that there had been a significant miscommunication between him and his agent in regards to the terms of his contract with the club.

Summers has since parted ways with his agent and although discussions have continued, neither party was able to come to an agreement. Summers, who is now being represented by his Uncle advised his immediate departure from Australia to return home to review his situation.

Not much the club could do.Its not the first time its happened and wont be the last. I know of a SEABL club that recruited an import and he thought he was getting US dollars not Aus dollars. Dare say he was out of here rather quickly.

And most of these guys just finished college yet can't take the time to read a contract

Surely the one thing you do actually read is the part which tells you how much you're getting paid!

How is he going to read his contract in Europe, if that is where he ends up? Hopefully they write it in american for him.

His agent sounds like that import that played in the SBL and bragged to the media about being paid 1mil+ and having his own private island/jet.

hopefully he ends up at the team that Corin Henry played for where they only gave him a bike to ride to games/training in the snow... lol...

Disappointed for Hawks fans (I know, I feel dirty just thinking it) as they had a real gem...

Feel sorry for the Hawks but better to find out now than later. Know of two SEABL imports who got out here played a few games and then asked for more money. They were sent packing as well!!!

I too feel sorry for the Hawks, not much luck with imports in recent years.

What for? They need a PG not a SF.

Interesting thought Paul, wouldnt be the first time the 'i want to make more money in Europe' clause was used then to end up in another NBL club, Ebi Ere did it to the Dragons in 2009 and played for the Tigers from memory.

Anyone know who is on the radar to replace him for the Hawks, any of the good SEABL imports still in Oz able to be bought in quickly and cheaply for atleast a trial?

Rather scathing assessment of the whole debacle on the Illawarra Mercury website.

What for? Summers can play, covers a reasonable proportion of what Goulding and Dennis offer and has his visa clearance and should be available for round one, which most other options wont be.

Furthermore, of the half decent locals on their list to replace Greer most are point guards who could form a tandem with Tomlinson with ballhandling help from Summers and Worthington.

A short-term deal might work well for both sides as there will be more Euro jobs open around Christmas and the Tigers will prob get a better PG if they wait until November when NBA pre-season finishes.

The downside is how he's acted with the Hawks, do you want someone like that at your club?

The Tigers have never really had concerns with guys that have had professional issues in the past (Flynn, Hodge, Tucker, Devendorf etc) but doubt they would bother with a SF when the only PG they have is Tomlinson, he's not NBL starter level yet just because he had 2-3 decent pre-season games.

If they want a cheapish option who would likely jump at the opportunity with enthusiasm, and would be able to play straight away with no visa issues id assume, Willie Farley is still in Australia, can still play at a decent level.

Summers isnt really a pure SF, he is a guard who can rebound, handle and create shots, not dissimilar to Goulding and Dennis in some areas.

If they want someone for round one to cover their scoring hole with Goulding and Dennis out, and have local PG options to replace Greer short term then Summers is a near perfect on-court fit.

Re issues, the Tigers had big issues with Flynn last year (first of new ownership) and were delighted with how good Dennis was as a person. I think that would be somewhat of a consideration, but if it is a short term deal til they get a PG in November then maybe not.

Summers should've played out the season and then gone looking for payday. This, as his first gig, can't look great. Maybe he has something lined up already. In which case, pretty shitty to desert a team a week or so out.

Wonder if he actually realises the American dollar isn't that strong (not that big a difference after conversion) and is going to become weaker in the immediate future.

There are always 1-2 imports released every preseason, last season the Crocs axed both of their imports on the same day!

Quite ironic that Summers majored in Sociology at MSU.

Probably spent all his time studying other people's human behaviour that he forgot about his own.

Tigers need a point. You would expect an announcement in the next week as more players are getting cut from NBA teams.

I doubt anyone who didn't read how much he was getting in a contract would be overly capable of considering financial trends of countries...

Yea, to be honest i wouldnt be shocked if he ended up un-employed or on a gig paying no more in a place not as nice to live. His problem should have played out the season and got a pay rise at the end if he proved to be good enough for one. The good Euro jobs would allready be filled wouldnt they? Guys like Ingles and Jawai who play as imports in Europe were signed ages ago.

From the Illawarra Mercury article:

It is believed the 23-year-old swingman approached management earlier this week and requested a more lucrative deal.

When coach Gordie McLeod and general manager Stuart Wilkinson explained to Summers the club was not in a position to offer him more money, he asked that his contract be torn up.
The Hawks press release was more than fair to the guy.

Paul's suggestion makes some sense.

The Tigers really have no business beating anybody in this league minus Goulding and an import. If Summers could help them sneak a couple of wins over the first month of the season, thent it could well be the difference between making finals or missing finals come March
