Rupert Sapwell

Posts on OzHoops are reporting Rupert has been released by Cairns.

How good would it be too see Rupert back with the 6ers, with Mahersy, Rees and Sapwell helping to blood in some of the young guns coming through.

You would have to say that Rupert would have to be a target of the 36ers.

He would be a great signing as he can play various positions, guard post players and provide good leadership.

Besides leadership, I'd say that Jacob Holmes can now do all of those things just as well, plus is more of Adelaide's future and would be a more reliable shot. He could be close to the body strength of Sapwell to hold people out too.

Don't get me wrong, Rupert is smart and great with all people, but I think his next job would be closer to running the business/marketing side of a club, or coaching, than playing. Who knows, I could be wrong.

I think, though, that our targets now have to be a 5 or a 2. Rupert is a 3/4 surely?

I think Rupert coming off the bench as a 3/4 would release Nash to the 2, and allow Oscar to play the 4 and rotate thru the 5 with Reesy.

I think he could be crucial, provided he can fit cap demands, in helping blood the youngies.

Agree Isaac. I didn't mean for Rupert to eat into Jacob's time.

It is just with the cap space we now have, Sapwell would make a far more valuable 9th/10th man than the guys being mentioned from the ABA.

We have 5 positions to fill.

I would go with

1. Farley or Tucker (both exciting players. Farley can flat out score and is a clutch player. He is proven in Smyth's system. Tucker can play 3 positions and is a chance for a quadruple double every night of the season if you include turnovers). With Cat gone we need someone who can create offensively. Either of these guys would be awesome.

2. Derek Moore (can rebound, block shots and defend which is what we need. He is quick and can play outside which is important considering Dusty is our best post player offensively. Is also the best of the remaining unsigned Australian big men.)

3. Darren Ng (with consistent minutes he could well develop into the back-up guard who can provide instant offense that we have lacked.)

4. Paul Rees (a knowledgable back up big man who won't let the Dave Cooper's and Kingma's have career games against us. Could perform the role Davis performed so well in his last seasons.)

5. Rupert Sapwell (a fan favourite whose veteran leadership is crucial. We couldn't ask for a better 10th man who is capable of filling in at almost every position.)

Probably more importantly for management, 4 of these 5 players (excluding Moore) are some of the most popular 36ers players in recent memory and would most definitely result in more tickets sold.

It is interesting to note Dusty's opinion on his website. He stated, "I would like to play with a guy like Derek Moore and a guy like farely/tucker".

I am actually slightly excited just at the thought of Farley / Tucker and Moore.

Whilst Derek rejected the Suxers (no typo) first offer, hopefully a revised, upwards, bid would convince him.

I have reason to beleive that we could expect to see Farley in town within the next 2 weeks, but that source hasnt always been reliable in the past.

Yogee, I'm sure we all are praying that your source is on the money this time.

Hard not to be excited by the prospect of Farley being a 36er again. Brings back too many good memories from our last championship year.

He will absolutely destroy some of the weakened teams in the NBL at present.

I'm sure we will sign Moore this time round. We basically have to!

The championship team will be put back together but with Rychart instead of Stiff and Moore instead of Garrison. Ng would also replace Williams. More importantly Holmes and Forman are 10 times the players they were in their rookie years.

Rupert Sapwell??

Paul Rees??

No thanks. I am surprised people are keen to go back to 2001. These guys are past it.

Ok, I can accept Rees as a backup if we are really struggling to find anyone else but Sapwell too?

In my opinion we need to chase Moore hard with a revised offer. Then we need an import guard to round out the roster. That would be a solid and well balanced lineup depending on the quality of the import.

The alternative would be to plug the 2-spot with James Harvey or some other Australian guard and use the import position to get a big man?

Not too many established free agents left though.

Does anyone know if the 36ers have spoken to, or are even interested in Tucker? I think R-Tuck is a great talent, and would love to see him in uniform this coming season.

I do also like Harvey, though he doesn't play defence.

Axel Dench is available.

Any thoughts?

Yea dench would be ok, but i'd prefer moore cos of his shot blocking!
And if it is tru that cat has left we should definatly be able to afford Farley, Moore or Dench and Rees, i would also love sapwell back as our 10th man to bring some leadership and hustle off the bench! and he's probably better than most abl players anyway! so i'd take him or they could try for another young guard eg. wilkey or bell, my team would be
PG Maher, SG Farley, SF Holmes, PF Rychart, C Moore or Dench 6 Nash 7 Forman 8 Ng 9 Rees 10 Sapwell that team could definatly bring home the title in my opinion its basically our last title team with moore in stiffs spot and rychart in garrisons spot along with the improvement of holmes, i reckon its the strongest team we've had for a while! and of course if Rogers wanted to come back and were to accept the money u would offer to Moore or Dench i'd take him over them! but not if its gonna cost us mor money
