Taipans @ Tigers 5th Jan

Cairns playing 3rd game in 6 days, Tigers pretty much in the same boat.
Cairns has won 4 out of their last 5 games while Melbourne are on a 5 game winning streak.

Despite the Taipans' starting to win games the Tigers are on a roll and Goulding has been killing us the last couple games between the two sides. Cairns need to play 3 or 4 times better then the Kings game to have any hope and without Trigger we are going to have to shoot the lights out without that inside presence.

Would love the Taipans to upset the Tigers today. Melbourne really concern me as a 6ers fan and as much seperation between them and us is a good thing! Who knows perhaps today is the day Stevie Weigh finds all that potential Mr Magic always talks about!

I'm in a Sydney King style tipping slump but surely Melbourne will get the win today.

I think Wortho thinks it is his performing right as Tigers' awesome leader.
Oh wait a minute, he isn't the leader.
How can that have happened?
He is soooo predictable.

come on fearne, left young on way too long and turned the game, young needs to stop trying to putting up shots over the bigs, and passing, well enough said.... weigh should be going inthe lane drawing the fouls

Fearne seems to be out of his depth.

If Fearne is out of his depth, Heal must be a mile under after Friday night.

Good to see Balls still playing well when he gets given court time.

Fearne this season is starting an import on the bench. Who is out of their depth?

On Tens commentary Carfino used the line "Steve Weigh got confidence in the win over the Kings. Just waiting for him to erupt" (He will be waiting a while).
How long until Carfino gets over Weighs potential? The guy is nearly a veteran.
I guess Brad Hill is a rookie and Oscar Forman a development player.

Most of the afore mentioned players are average. SRS.
Some have found their niche others haven't

anon. Being sarcastic regarding Hill and Forman. The point is we don't talk about their potential anymore, yet Weigh year after year is talked up by Carfino and crew.

All you anonymous posters saying Fearne is out of his depth are just clueless. Also the Taipans frontcourt rotation right now is only Burston/Loughton/Young (Andronicus is still too raw) with Trigger out so when Young made those errors and Loughton is sitting on the bench in foul trouble theres not much he can do against a big Tigers team.

Ballinger shooting stroke looking good again since those ankle injuries. Tigers getting a lot of momentum and next 3 games should go 2 of 3.

Not sarcastic about Hill nor Forman at all. Formans found his niche and Hill has yet to prove himself.

Marty Clarke, Mark Radford and the potential that was Stevie Weigh was the worst combo to happen to bball in SA over the last few years. Carfino should be watching 6ers re runs and he'd change his tune on Stevie boy.

How many games does Hill need to prove himself. He has now logged over 200 games at multiple clubs now at his 4th and was at the 36ers twice. If he ain't done it by now, by when will he do it?

He could've put Loughton back in. Would you rather win the game, or finish it without any of your players fouling out?

Why was tragardh out this weekend other than to screw over my dream team?

Great work by 'Balls'. Gotta give the man some court time!

It's not as simple as that though is it. In order to win the game the Taipans needed Loughton in the 4th. He becomes just as much of a liability on defense as Young was on offense except the consequences for Loughton picking up his 5th with an entire quarter to play is much bigger than giving up 4 points off 2 bad passes. The game was still very close at that stage.

Why do you need him in the fourth any more than you need him any other time? If you're going to be in the same position late in the fourth quarter regardless of whether or not a certain player has played, or how many minutes that player has played, that player is adding no value to your team and there's no point having them on the court anyway.

If they are adding value, you're going to be in a worse position in the fourth if you leave them on the bench than if you play them. You can bench them, let the game run away from you, and play them in garbage time, or you can put them on the floor and risk it. If they foul out early, you're at least in with a chance.

Alternatively, you put them in and get out to an insurmountable lead, so it doesn't matter when they foul out.

When the going is at its toughest late in the game you need your best players on so you can get buckets. Earlier in the game you are more likely to create buckets thru your offence.

Two points is two points whenever it's scored. A player with five fouls is out of the game without a choice. A player benched through foul trouble is out of the game only through the choice of the coach. Really depends on the style of the player and their opponent, you'd think.

However, this NBA analysis suggests that benching primary players to avoid foul trouble hampering their game is generally the right move, especially for bigs.

Fearne just didn't gamble in the end. Can't blame him for trying to protect Loughton but to suggest he is out of his depth in this league (which is what I was addressing to begin with) is ludicrous. At the end of the day players need to step up as well, it seems the condensed schedule affected Cairns more than it did the Tigers and we got sloppy executing plays whilst Melbourne did a great job making the shots when it mattered.

"However, this NBA analysis suggests that benching primary players to avoid foul trouble hampering their game is generally the right move, especially for bigs."

One would guess a large part of that is due to them playing to keep out of foul trouble, rather than to win. If they know they're staying out there regardless of how many fouls they get, they're less likely to be tentative. It's essentially become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I also noticed Gliddon was benched the entire 4th quarter while on four fouls, despite shooting 4/4fg for the game up until he got benched. Probably could have used him on the court, not sure what Fearne was thinking there.
