Coach Pop - gotta love his honesty

"Sometimes in timeouts I'll say, 'I've got nothing for you. What do you want me to do? We just turned it over six times. Everybody's holding the ball. What else do you want me to do here? Figure it out,' " Popovich said, according to the San Antonio Express-News, not long before the Spurs used 14 3-pointers and a season-high 39 assists to dispatch the Cavs.

"And I'll get up and walk away. Because it's true. There's nothing else I can do for them. I can give them some bulls---, and act like I'm a coach or something, but it's on them."

Didn't Aaron Fearne recently get criticised for saying pretty much the exact same thing in regards to Wilson, Mccamey and Loughton? If it's good for pop it should be good enough for AF

pop's record is "slightly" more distinguished than fearne's unfortunately so he'll get away with some things that aaron won't.

Context is different from the Fearne saga.

Plus, Pop wasn't naming any players.

Plus Pop wasn't attacking his own fans.

So in reality its plenty different from AF's situation.

To answer all your questions, how long have they been right up there, esp considering everybody thought they'd flounder when The Admiral retired

You have to be a great coach to have the courage to do this, and you have to have the right players. Spurs have both. Love it.

"I think competitive character people don't want to be manipulated constantly to do what one individual wants them to do," Popovich said, according to the Express-News. "It's a great feeling when players get together and do things as a group. Whatever can be done to empower those people."

Pop says it himself - he's empowering his players to make decisions. He's showing trust in his players and allowing them to be part of the process, rather than just being dictated to - when things are going well and when they're going badly. Terrific leadership imo.

What Fearne did was publicly call out three players for criticism, saying their performances were below par and team success was riding on their performances. That's not empowering anybody.

I feel for Fearne though as Loughton et al are treating it like a holiday up there rather than work.
