Best NBL games you've ever seen?

With playoffs around the corner, let's relive some memories!

What is your all-time favourite NBL game or games?

That double overtime Taipans win over NZ is probably my favourite in recent memory.

Game 3 2001 Semi-Finals Adelaide @ Wollongong.

The infamous non-foul call on Darnell Mee with Damon Lowery winning the game for the Hawks with three of the rudest made FT's you will ever see.

I still say the 36ers were screwed out of the championship that year but rightfully went on to win the title the following year.

Hands down the most exciting, drama filled NBL game I've ever seen, as painful as it was.

Most memorable (apart from GF wins) was 1994 GF Game 1 at the Powerhouse, best atmosphere ever in the time between full time and overtime. Never heard anything like that night since

I have a sweet spot for that game against the Crocs last season that required Knight to hit a late three to seal. It's one thing to see players doing what they do best to win a game, quite another to see players go way outside their comfort zone to do so.

Not to go off on a tangent but the topic got me thinking

The one problem with getting a consensus about greatest games is that we had a black hole in terms of coverage for a decade or so with only a couple of games on Fox.

There are many games I went to at the stadium which were not televised and so with no highlights have been easily forgotten and 7/8th or more of the fanbase did not see which saddens me.

That was close to the most spectacular games, that's for sure.

Favourites that come to mind for me are the 99/00 Melbourne derby where D-Mac hit the game-winner, all three games from the 2012 GF, G3 & 4 from the 2008 GF, and the Sydney v Townsville game where Heal hit the triple with 6secs to go then Rose won it with a three at the other end!

Maybe not the best but it was my 1st NBL game I attended. Blaze vs Crocs at the Gold Coast. The Blaze came back and brought it to overtime and then went on to win.

Prob the last game at the old Snake Pit in Wollongong vs Townsville, came from behind to win and people threw dummies at Rucker from memory.

Have to agree with anon about the great Lowery Swindle game and with Wabbit about the '94 GF. Both great games in Sixers history.

One thing I've always wondered about the Lowery game was that there was like 0.3 of a sec left or something and his last FT bobbled around the rim. Doesn't the clock start once the ball leaves the shooter's hand? If so, and time expires after the shot, but before it goes through the net, does the shot count?!?!

Clock starts once it hits the rim for a final free throw shot?

Just like a buzzer beater though if it bobbles around for a while as long as it was shot before time expires it counts.

How about his obvious foot violations on all 3 free throws?

Or that despite the fact there was time still on the clock the 36ers players weren't allowed to line up for the FT's.

The best NBL game I have ever seen is SF Game 3 of Perth Vs North Melbourne (Grace's first year and their first championship).

The Cats had one of the greatest liabilities in Jeff Allen (whose turnover led Grace to foul out in the 4th).

There were heroics from everywhere, Ellis, Pinder, Crawford, Fisher, Joe Hillman, some unknown called Ricky Skenderis (spelling) and Marty Clarke was playing too!

I used to have this game on VHS but lost it moving house.

The year earlier one of the most exciting games was Perth @ Adelaide I thin for a playoff game. A see-saw affair until an Orlando Phillips putback in the last few seconds.

Everyone was going nuts and blocked the cameraman from the actual shot, but very good viewing nonetheless.

As a kid I didn't watch NBL on tv much though it was on channel 7 back then. The first game I watched was 1990 grand final Brisbane v Perth game 3.
Brisbane were expected to win (Perth finished 5th that year) and Perth ended up winning easily.
I went to parade in Perth a few days later and have been hooked on the game ever since.

Maybe not the absolute best, but the finish to this game against Cairns in Adelaide got the crowd going: Adelaide vs Cairns - Farley hits a three running to the side and then Maher has a layup before the Taipans are denied at the buzzer. This seems to be the boxscore - I'd forgotten about Tate Decker! Looks like we were missing Nash for that game.

I also personally enjoyed this 36ers-Breakers game mostly because it involved the 36ers winning *and* my brother getting a lot of shots up with Penney out injured.

The bullets v wildcats quadruple overtime wasn't bad! Think it was '94. High quality game. Not spectacular but so much pressure riding on each shot but each team kept hitting and trading baskets throughout each OT. Of course Heal had to be the one to hit the winning shot >:/

I used to have a VHS called Rebound '01, a season review of 1991 showing the highlights of one game per round. (I miss it so badly)

One game with a great finish was Tigers v Giants. Ray Gordon (I think) hit a late shot to put the Tigers ahead. Pat Reidy went for the game winning 3 and Gaze plucked the ball straight out of his hands just as he was releasing the shot. The crowd was so loud you couldn't hear the commentators.

Regarding the Lowery free-throw discussion, the clock starts when a player touches the ball, not when it leaves the shooter's hand or when it hits the rim. If the players had been allowed to line up, it would have gone to OT.

Given that they weren't, clearly the game was over and the Sixers won.

Ron Dorsey hitting the 3 to send GF into overtime about 4 yrs ago was a beauty to watch live against NZ. Of course CJ was dropping daggers down the stretch also as he does!!

There was another reg season game against NZ about 6 yrs ago where it went to 2OT & Cattalini finished with 40 + & CJ had high 30's. Big shot after big shot & fantastic stuff. Cairns got the win!! Gonna miss CJ Bruton in this league - special player. Cat on his night in his peak was also worth the entry fee!

I remember on this night we ended up at crown casino & Daryl Braithwaite was singing 'horses' live & we were all that pumped we went straight to the dance floor.

Hoping Taipans can keep those moments coming...

"Given that they weren't, clearly the game was over and the Sixers won."

The timekeeper stops the clock when the ref blows the whistle. So a foul can happen when the ball is live, with say 0.02 on the clock, but the time can expire before the play is called.

These days with video review you can go back and put time on the clock but they didn't have that luxury back in 2001.

A couple of games not mentioned, but:

Brett Maher's last game. What a ripper. Stadium was louder than Pete Walsh's shirts. The 3 made by Brett was amazing.

Not a high quality game, but the "Hodge Stomp" game was probably the most memorable.

Wabbit is spot on. That game was ridiculous, the atmosphere was intense and it was so loud. I ran around the concourse giving high fives to anyone and everyone right after the 4th qtr ended. Got back to where my mates were standing, and proceeded to pass out for a couple of minutes. Woke up to the fact that OT had started and I was missing a couple of minutes. Wild night!

Double overtime game between Adelaide and Brisbane in 1991. Leroy Loggins scored 46 points, 17 in the overtime periods alone to lead the Bullets to victory. He hit a massive running trey to tie the game and had a huge block on Mike McKay in the open court. Classic Loggins game. Rucker also dropped 40 odd.

Going way back to the mid 80s and the 6ers invincible team (or around then). At Apollo, Pearce misses the long shot, and Bill Jones comes through with the put back slam to beat Geelong on the buzzer.

Also Bradtke's 1st game back in Adelaide after doing the dirty on them. Crowd booed him the whole game and 6ers get the upset win. He opted out/asked for early release from contract to go overseas to play. Then comes back early and signs for Tigers.

I remember a great Tigers v Giants game at the Glasshouse where Andrew Gaze was in hospital but Mark Gaze hit six triples and I think the Tigers stole the win, either that or they just got pipped at the end.

Just looked it up, late in the 1990 season and the Giants got up 110-109. Was an absolute thriller. M Gaze had 20 that night and had 32 for the rest of the season!

You don't need video review to put time back on the clock, you just need to decide that there should be more time on the clock. I can remember it happening several times in other games.

If they weren't going to put time on the clock, Lowery shouldn't have got free throws.

Out of interest, can you find somewhere in the rule book that says time should have been put back on the clock? I ask because time between foul and whistle isn't put back on the clock at other times.

It is if it's enough to be noticeable. It just normally takes several seconds running off for that to be the case without the buzzer going off to alert everyone.

I was curious about the rule regarding when the clock started, as discussed above, a while back so I looked it up and I'm pretty sure that the rule states that either there's time on the clock or it was a foul. Can't be both.

I think this thread has undone 13 years of therapy for a lot of us 36ers' fans. My most memorable game was watching 36ers vs Ian Davies, i mean vs Newcastle Falcons in the semi final in '85, at the Apollo. The score was 151-103 to the 36ers. No free throws needed to decide that one. I feel better already.

Not an NBL game but it involved the Bullets "in their absolute prime" as mentioned by above Anon.

It was a preseason encounter between a full strength China national team (including Yao Ming) against the Bullets. Bullets leading the whole way but the Chinese refs towards the end called ridiculous phantom fouls to overturn a double digit lead. CJ with a go ahead running buzzer beater after a turnover from the Chinese froutcourt to win the game. Amazing.

I was going to write this in the CJ tribute thread as it shows how clutch he was even against dodgy officiating.
