SEABL round 2

MtG gets the expected win over CoE but the kids put up a fight. Great to see Hill, Allen and Daly on the floor for pioneers, when burden gets back they will be tough!

Nuna showed Hobart will lack the depth this year. Without Creek and Greer they easily won.

Thank goodness these two teams are in opposite conferences, already looking like Nuna v MtG for the championship!

For MTG to only win by 10 poses some question marks. The CoE team are pretty underdone. And Burdon will make a difference but hes not exactly a superstar in the league. MTG yet to prove their worth IMO.

And Nuna get the easy win? They won by 8! Hardly a demanding score. With Creek and Greer to come in they are going to be deep tho but not necessarily tougher. Chemistry and balance will be the issue. If they nut that out they're the team to beat.

Think MT G will slowly put it together over the next few weeks...often takes some time to settle when guys come back together and are new into the group.

I think Nuna will be the same when Creek/Greer return might take a few weeks to get rotations/roles adjusted as guys currently playing won't be seeing as much floor.

@ Talis said not sure Nuna/MT G are faves to win it, think Geelong, Dandy & Bendigo might have a very good chance...not forgetting to mention Hobart (if they can get 2 more depth players or NBL guy

NW Tas down by 7 with 3:09 to go and got up by 2 after Nuna turned the ball over 4 times in last 5 minutes.

Tas 3-0 with Hobart next week. Both imports playing well with major minutes going to the Tas kids.

Word is already that one of their imports isn't up to speed. A fresh NWT playing a semi beat up Spectres should always win. Add Creek and greer into the Spectres side and every chance they will be untouchable.
Jerker Jenkins scored 21. Spectres had 17 t/o's. They wont win any games with that many t/o's.

Some interesting results!

Seems Jenkins at NWT may be the real deal after all? 3-0 start for a team that cleaned house in the off season.

Also seems Ballarat may not be as bad as some where saying? Pretty impressive win over a talented Brisbane team who only have Teys left to add. The Kenny/Massingale combo didn't have a great night.

Sandringham win over Frankston proves the Sabres will also be better than a few have said already. Huge last term to get the W.

Less interesting was...
MtGambier and Albury did what was expected while Geelong and Kilsyth beat up on undermanned teams. Bendigo should win by 30 against Knox who are missing several key guys.

Albury nearly didn't do what was expected with the scores level at half time after a missive 2nd quarter from the kids.

School teacher, good coin? Please. However much better than being a 10th man on NBL roster and having zero job security...

Claiming Jenkins is legit doesn't mark McDonald down, it just proves he is best Australian PG outside NBL.

no one knows anything about Jenkin.
2 games against poor sides and 1 against a beat up Nunawading doesn't make him NBL material or as good or better as Jazz

jazz was an nbl flop and Jenkins prove that some D loeague players are legit but we are all missing the big picture that he is making Phil Thomas look like a real coach!

1st coaching change of the season:

Basketball Geelong, home of the McDonald's Geelong Supercats, have terminated the contract of SEABL women’s coach Paul O’Brien, effective immediately.
CEO Dean Anglin confirmed the club’s decision on to release O’Brien from the position.

"This is a decision we have made with thoughtful consideration," Mr. Anglin said

“The club understands this decision may come as surprise to some given the team's on court success.

“However we are of the belief that Paul is not the right person to lead the McDonald’s Geelong Supercats SEABL women and that the best course of action for the club and the players was to move forward with a new head coach.”

O’Brien took the reins of the Lady Supercats ahead of its entry into the SEABL in 2011, guiding the team to a conference grand final appearance in 2012 and a further playoff appearance in 2013.

The SEABL women’s team have started the 2014 season with two wins from their opening three matches, defeating competition powerhouse Dandenong Rangers on Saturday evening.

“We would like to thank Paul for his contribution to the McDonald’s Geelong Supercats and wish him well in his future endeavours” Mr Anglin said.

“We recognise the work that Paul has put in establishing our women’s program, but we simply believe this is the right decision for the future and have made a conscientious decision to move on.”

Former Supercats’ NBL player and current Director- Pathways & Development Bruce Hultgren has been appointed interim coach for the remainder of the 2014 SEABL season.

“The club will begin the search for a replacement immediately,” Mr. Anglin said.

“We are expecting to make an appointment ahead of preparations for the 2015 SEABL season.”

Why doesn't Geelong actually state why the coach was fired???

It's one thing to make tough decisions but very weak to not at least state why to those who support and follow the club.

PS - Really classy to see on the clubs Facebook site that some current players and representatives of the club are publicly 'liking' the fact a guy who committed his time and effort over many years was fired. All class. Fresh new profile but same old Geelong.

Considering that round 2 has only just finished and there is 18 rounds to go, shouldn't the Geelong Boards focus be on what is best for the team going forward and trying to make the transition to a new coach as smooth & easy as possible for them, rather than potentially stirring up unnecessary shit just for the sake of it?

And in regards to any post on facebook and it being "liked", what else are people meant to do to acknowledge the news? There isn't exactly a "dislike" button or a "thanks for update" button - maybe they are clicking "like" not because they necessarily like or agree with what has happened but because they like being informed & updated with what is happening within the club.

For what it's worth there are only five likes on the status, only one of which is a current player with the Youth League men's team.

Bruce Hultgren is a great coach and I think he'll do a great job with the girls for the 2014 season as Paul's replacement.

"Bruce Hultgren is a great coach and I think he'll do a great job with the girls for the 2014 season as Paul's replacement".

@BethDavis:
Can you please state some actual substance behind this statement. You are usually insightful and prominently deal in facts which is rare(esp on this page)but this one is a surprise from you.

I understand Bruce Hultgren played very minor roles on the end of a couple of NBL benches as a player in the 90's but what has he actually ever coached and what achievements have his teams produced??

I looked into him when he was appointed the Vic Country state coach this year and can not understand how could he be qualified to coach a junior VC team let alone at nationals or at the seabl level. From all reports he is a fantastic guy but it would appear he is not qualified at all.

Happy to stand corrected beth.

I know Bruce from my time at Geelong, including when he was the assistant coach of the SEABL Men's team.

Aside from his four years in the USA (where I believe he also did some coaching, at what level I am not 100% sure) he has always been involved in coaching representative basketball in Geelong, and if you ever get the chance to sit and talk ball with him you'll know he is pretty switched on when it comes to the coaching side of things.

He has always been a source of knowledge and input to the club, and has written and implemented several coaching development programs for the club over the years.

He's the type of coach/person that players respond well to and in my opinion is well suited to step into the role as a replacement.

So, it might not be FACT that he'll be a great replacement, but certainly my opinion!

Anon, are you suggesting that just because you cannot find something written about a coach, a resume or fancy document with credentials that he can't coach?

Bruce knows basketball, he is the interim coach until a permanent one is found, this process takes time.

You ask for evidence and facts, yet present none yourself.

At seable level, absolutely.

FACTS: Appointed a coach who has no coaching credentials, not history of success (at any level), no proved history of development of players.
Over a coach who has the complete opposite resume...

This is the GEELONG SUPERCATS! What has it come too?

The expectation was high for the Lady Supercats this year, wasted year after round 3 it appears now.
Expect opposition coaches to mess this new guy up.

Who is to say it wouldn't have been a wasted year without this decision? If speculation is to be believed that there was disharmony between the playing group and coach, how were the 2 parties going to be able to work together across the year to achieve success?

This might be the best thing for the playing group, and allow them to concentrate on the remainder of the season.

SEABL Round 2 Recap on PnR is now up:

SEABL Round 2: Geelong Create East Separation while the CoE Inflict Some Pain

SEABL MEN: The East Conference is looking a little lop-sided after two rounds as the Geelong Supercats sit on top with a 3-0 record while four sides are yet to pick up their first win.

SEABL WOMEN: Having picked up a victory in their first ever SEABL match, the Centre of Excellence were even more impressive this week, annihilating the Albury/Wodonga Lady Bandits in one of the competition's worst ever defeats.
