BA launch Aussie Hoops for 5-10 yos

Official site

Basketball Australia is pleased to launch the new and improved Aussie Hoops program, helping youngsters around the country enjoy basketball - everyone's game.

Aussie Hoops is Basketball Australia’s official junior game development program for children aged 5–10 years. Aussie Hoops enables participants of all abilities the opportunity to learn basketball in a structured, inclusive and safe environment, developing physical fitness, social skills and an understanding of the sport while having fun.

In a major coup, two of Australian basketball’s biggest names have jumped on board in support of the new Aussie Hoops program.

Jayco Australian Opals legend Lauren Jackson and Australian Boomers star Patty Mills will be the official Aussie Hoops Ambassadors, helping to spread the word of basketball around the country.

Jackson, a four-time Olympian with the Jayco Opals, said Aussie Hoops is all about having fun playing basketball.

"Playing basketball has been such a big part of my life and to have a program like Aussie Hoops to make learning the skills of the game fun is great for these budding Opals and Boomers," Jackson said.

Currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA playoffs, Mills said Aussie Hoops is a great way to learn about basketball in a fun and friendly environment.

“Basketball is about having fun, being active and learning new skills, while making new friends – and Aussie Hoops is the best way to do that,” Mills said.
Global sporting apparel brand Peak Sports have thrown their support behind the exciting new program as an inaugural Aussie Hoops sponsor and exclusive footwear partner.

The new Aussie Hoops program was launched at half-time of Game Two of the 2014 Sino-Australia Challenge between the Australian Boomers and China at Challenge Stadium in Perth.

The Aussie Hoops program will be delivered in each school term, delivered by nationally accredited coaches, with a focus on participation and inclusiveness.

The program is to be rolled out at the start of term three, July 2014.

For a comprehensive overview of the new Aussie Hoops program, including fees and registration information visit the new Aussie Hoops website at www.aussiehoops.com.au.

The re-launch of Aussie Hoops has taken place following an extensive review of the program led by Basketball Australia with the valuable input and support of its state and territory members and the Australian Sports Commission.

Like all programs like this in any sport the quality of the program is entirely dependent on those delivering it. Let's hope they take the care and time to properly educate the educators.

Nice idea, but don't juniors go all right at the moment? Better off sorting out the national program and NBL (I know the NBL is not BA's problem, but there's got to be some sort of relationship.)

There's no grass roots promotion from BA so figers crossed the spend on this and get some real promotion on it.

The promotion behind this in using LJ & Mills will definitely help. But also need to get NBL and WNBL players involved (as per AFL with OzKick) to help convert juniors into passionate followers of NBL and WNBL.

100% agree #476923

Content and delivery of program MUST be 1st rate. Great having Patty and Lauren promoting the program but it's not worth anything if not done well on the ground.

The Aussie Hoops URL was getting plugged on the sidelines in the Sino-Aus game last night. Hopefully they can organise the same for NBL games, and NBL clubs don't see it as an us-vs-them thing and an opportunity instead.

Agree Isaac. NBL and WNBL need to embrace Aussie Hoops and help drive it for the benefit of the juniors, but also to gain traction with grass roots.

You guys should be excited about the future. You have a lot of bright talent. IMO, Canada, Australia and Great Britain will be the ones to watch for the future.
