Funny ABL on Channel 31

I don't know how serious any of you were about starting up an ABL show on Channel 31, but I think it's a great idea and I am willing to invest some time in it, if others are willing to join me. It's going to take a while to get organised, but I figure if we start planning now, we can have the show underway next year and do one a week for the duration of the ABL season (ie. approx 20 shows). I've done some scouting for information, and here's what we will need to do:

We can choose between an hour or half-hour each week. Half an hour will probably be our best bet, because making the show will take a lot of time as it is, and an hour-long show will add a lot of extra work, cost etc.

Channel 31 works like most TV stations... its shows are interspersed with "sponsorship breaks" ("sponsorship breaks" because it's illegal for a community TV channel to have "commercials"). A half-hour show will probably have about 7 30-second sponsors' ads interspersed with the program, maybe 3 breaks of 2-3 ads each, plus a 2 minute Channel 31 ad. Total actual program time = 24mins 30 secs a week.

There are two options with this advertising. If we pay Channel 31 to air our show, a half hour show will cost us $200 a week, and an hour-long show will cost $400 an episode. For that cost, Channel 31 will find sponsorship for us.

Our other option is to find sponsorship ourselves. If we do this, we find our own sponsors (ie. 4+ companies / businesses to pay $50 a week for a 30 second ad during the program). We then have the option of making a small profit. Also, product placement does not count as sponsorship, so if we hang sponsors' signs around our set, we have the option of making more money.

It's possible to submit each week's episode on a MiniDV tape for broadcasting. This means that we will need a digital video camera (I have one; we will probably need more to get footage of simultaneous games, etc) and access to editing facilities (I can edit at home on Final Cut Pro, and some segments could be done on simpler programs like iMovie if others have access to them and are willing to spend a little time each week editing part of a show). These would all be fine for the segments of the show that will be shot at various games each week, etc.

I am assuming we will also need some kind of "studio" setting in between different segments of the show. Channel 31 does have a studio available, with equipment (stage, 3-camera setup, studio lights, control room, vision mixing facilities, etc). Most of their shows are done in that studio. We have the option of using it ourselves, however it is hired out at a cost of $150 AN HOUR, so we are probably better off setting up a makeshift "studio" somewhere else. (Although if we want to put sponsors' signs up around the set, we could probably cover the cost of hiring out the studio, equipment etc for an hour a week).

Anyway, that's the business side of things... it will take some work, but I think we can get it done... there is a lot of possibility for sponsorship from the local basketball community, sports-related businesses, etc.

What we need to do next is decide what it is we want to do and who is willing to be involved with what. We have to decide what the program will involve, the target audience (kids? parents? the whole basketball community in SA?) The way I see it, we could generate a lot of interest for the show, putting the time etc on ABL programs, mentioning it at ABL games, putting it on the website... we could even run it both ways by putting the website address in the credits to attract people to the forum.

We also need to decide what kind of segments we will have, and what style the program will be. Then we need to write a proposal so that we can present it to Channel 31 and go about getting a timeslot for next year. (Are we thinking of it as a night-time show, daytime during the weekend, after school, after work...?)

We will need people to:

Find sponsors.
Design a logo / graphics / titles etc. for the show.
Film games and other segments each week.
Edit segments of the show each week / edit segments together to make the show.
Host (ie. be in front of the camera for various segments, or run the overall show from the studio).
Compose music to use (we can't use copyright music so we'll need people with contacts with local bands etc who would be willing to write music for us).
Find a location for the studio, if we decide not to use the one at Channel 31.
Design a website (Isaac, is there any possibility of having a page or two of hoops.com.au dedicated to the show? ie. what's on this week, the time and channel, coming soon, etc?)
We will also probably need a representative from each club to liaise with management, players etc and let them know what is going on, print articles in the newsletter, arrange for copies of game tapes if we don't film them ourselves....
If you can think of anything else that needs doing, let me know.

If you are seriously willing to get involved and spend a couple of hours (or more) a week to get this show on the air, please let me know, and tell me what skills you have to offer (even if you don't have any skills, you can easily be taught).

Also, if you have any ideas on how the program should be run, add them below. This is a great opportunity to promote South Australian basketball and I think that we should take it, rather than sit around talking about it.

Would a 1 hour show with limited highlights be possible to produce? I'm sure Paul Arnott can work the Vili's link and others like Norwood with Champs and North with Sportspower to drum up significant sponsorship $$$. Top work K!

To be honest, what you really would want, is ratgher than just an ABA focussed show, is to try and get on going sponsorship where it can go through the NBL season as well.

With the lay over of July / August / Spetember from ABA to NBL, it can give a 3 months break for the show.

Just a thought.

Thanks to all for your responses so far. It looks like we'll have enough people involved to give this a shot.

Yogee, I don't know that we would be able to do an NBL show, due to it being a national competition with a lot of sponsorship and money behind it. Here in SA we can probably get the support of the clubs behind us, but there may be legal issues involved with filming the NBL, using game footage for our own purposes, etc. Are there any lawyers using the forum that can find out if it's possible for us?

I'd like to start getting some ideas together for the format of the show and the types of segments we'll be doing so that we can contact Channel 31 with a proposal, find out exactly what we need to do with regards to sponsorship and get our planning underway. This is where all of you come in... what do you want to see on your basketball show?

Haha there's no lawyers, just a very poor law student :P INfact, I'm avoiding study right now to post for you! :)

What would I like to see? Probably the same things as they have on the local soccer shows on C31 - a panel type show, similar to the Footy Show - each game of the week previewed, a review of the previous week's action, a forum of well known players to discuss the issues that have arisen that week (ie footy show), a "street talk" segment (maybe at the unis, rundle mall, somwhere down south or up north [if teh tigers have a big win or a centrals upset], a player of the year competition, player of the week award, coaches come onto the show, an under20s segment...

Could this be a base for any website as well?

24 minutes to fill.

Have a weekly team profile. Do it in a random order. So, for example you'd take the camera to Wayville, introduce the coaches of Forestville and then run through the players with some video footage and FOX-style headshots - i.e., frontcourt, backcourt, x factor at the time, best performers of the bench, up and comers. Get a couple of quick quotes from the coach or captain on their performance that season or hopes for upcoming games.

Next week, a different team.

Have an on-camera shoot-out at half-time of a different game each week with kids and adults to spark interest.

Run through the results of previous ABL games and preview the next ones. Show some brief stats, but refer people to the web site for the full lists.

Profile a couple of local outdoor/school courts.

I think you'd have to do a Street-Talk equivalent at a court because I'm not sure that basketball has enough exposure that you'd get decent commentary from people off the street.

Then the rest would be panel commentary/interview and game highlights.

If it was weekly, that would make for a very cramped production schedule and it'd probably be best if as much stuff was prepared before each week. A fortnightly show might be best?

I don't want to make any claims of ownership, but I'm happy for hoops.com.au to be used for the show. i.e., this forum just becomes the forum of the show. Saves registering another domain, paying extra hosting costs ($500-600/year), etc.

Why shouldn't the Sixers themselves fund/run a show like this to get basketball on TV? C31 is hardly primetime, big-network FTA TV, but it's a service to the fans and better than nothing.

If it does eventuate that a group of fans put together a show, then I'm not sure what that would say about the abilities of any "official" basketball organisations in the state getting off their butts and doing it themselves. There must be the demand there -- people here are showing interest, and any fan I've spoken to thinks it's a great idea.

I have the Channel 31 "Producer / Program Provider Form: Register of intent to supply a program to C31 Adelaide" with me. We need the following information before I can send it off:

Title or working title of program (Ideas, anyone?)

Duration of program (I'm suggesting half an hour for the first season, and if we do that well and have enough support, we might be able to change to an hour the next year).

Number of episodes in series (Can someone tell me exactly how many weeks there will be for ABL next year, including finals? Or is this not known yet?)

Description of Concept
Description of main content of program (see previous posts above)

Target audience (who will watch) - "South Australian Basketball Fans"

Suggested timeslot and day (Ideas anyone? I'm suggesting as close to the end of the week as possible, probably a Thursday or Friday, so that we have as much time as possible to put together the previous week's footage. Maybe even a Saturday afternoon before that night's games would be good).

Brief profile of yourself / group.

I'm listing us down as a "community group" (the other option is "organisation")

If anyone has any final ideas and suggestions before I send the form off, let me know. It may take a while for them to get back to me, but once I hear from them I'll let all of you know what's going on.

Hoops SA is the Ticket to big money. Linked with this site, and Previewing next weeks Big Game of the Week! Following the show there should be a replay of Last weeks Big Game of the Week! I think the benefit of showing the Big Game of the Week! will allow coaches and players alike to see other teams in action. The Big Game of the Week! is crutial in the implementation of Hoops SA the TV show. A half hour show is simple and is hard enough to put together and with the back-up of Big Game of the Week! I think that there will be a huge following!

I also love the idea of a section on juniors. Maybe for 5 minutes a week we could have a kids' segment including things like age groups, state teams etc, that were mentioned above. Then maybe an ABL player or two with a "How to" section of one basketball skill a week, and possibly even some small basketball-related prizes for kids who tune in and get involved somehow (letters, posting on the forum, competitions perhaps?).

What if the show ran for 20 episodes. I think the ABL season runs for 18 games. So, we could include an intro week and finals or something.

Some features of the show, say Club Profile, or Junior Watch (sounds like an idea from a paedophile!) could be every second week, and alternate. Club Profile would be weeks 2, 4, 6, etc. Junior Watch or Street Ball would be 1, 3, 5, etc.

A couple of people would look after organising and filming the Club Profile segment 10 times in 20 games (and wow, 10 clubs. Perfect...) The Hoops SA show would still run weekly, but that sub-group would have a fortnight to arrange, film and edit their Club Profile segment. Gives us a bit more time.

And there could be a 2-3 DVD set of the series. Even if we have to burn them manually, and custom print the surface or something. Profits from the DVD sales could go towards an end of season event or financing the next season's equipment and so on.

Thoughts?

Isaac, thanks for the email. The sub-page is great and I will email you with regards to the other ideas and people who want to help out soon. Any help we can get would be great.

I really like the idea of doing segments of the show fortnightly. We're definitely going to need all the time we can get to edit and put the show together. The other thing we could possibly do is have various parts of the shows shot a few weeks in advance, even before the beginning of the season for team profiles etc.

I'm writing down everyone's ideas and planning as much as I can, but we can't really start to get things organised until we hear back from Channel 31. If everyone can keep putting ideas forward, that will help with the planning, and we can try to arrange a meeting for those who want to help out (and are willing to give up their anonymity!) as soon as I know more.

What about a 5 minute (or less)segment showing highlights of an old ABA/CBA game? Once again, don't know if we run into any legal stuff here but surely if the clubs or anyone out there who has shot some footage at a past game has it, it is their property to do whatever with it??
I've got the setup at home to get it from VHS to PC, cut it down from the whole game to a few minutes and put it out onto DVD or whatever if that would be any use, and wouldn't mind doing it if it was a fortnightly segment or something? Thinking along the lines of that "Simply Footy" show on 10 if anyone has seen it. They always do a flashback. If the old tapes are available out there, happy to let some time...

At the moment, just remember BASA and the 36ers wont be supporting anythign we do, if attached to this site.

We experienced the same thing when OzHoops first started, and evetually the NBL Head Office realsis what a valuable entity the OH site had become, to the point where even the Media Manager for the NBL posts on a regular basis, and several OH writers now also contribute to Pro Basketball Today.

Hopefully, eventually, the BASA / 36ers admin will realise that this site was borne out of a rather large gap in the web "marketplace", and will work in conjunction with us, instead of against us.

Hey everyone,

It's taken me a while to get online because I have a friend staying from overseas, but I thought I'd update you on what happened at the C31 meeting on Monday.

They seemed really interested in both ideas for the show, and said we can basically do whatever we want, or even both, as long as we pay for it and the pilot episodes are approved for quality. I didn't find out much that I didn't already know - it was mostly to do with the costs of airing a show. Just to recap:

1 hour show = $400 + GST. 51 minutes of showtime, 5 minutes of our sponsors' ads (10x30 seconds at $40 each would give us our $400) and 2 mins of C31 promos.

30 minute show = $200 +GST. 24min30sec of showtime, 2min30sec of sponsors' ads and 1 min of C31 promos.

The C31 promos sound good. We get to make a 30 second preview for our show and have it shown during similar programs throughout the week to try to get us more viewers, so that should be fun to do.

The next step on the agenda is for us to make a pilot episode, which will be previewed by C31 staff before they give us a contract for the show.

As most of you probably know, a pilot is generally used as the first episode of a series. We need to have ours completed a week or two before we want our show to start airing (although this sounds to me like a very minimal amount of time), so we have a couple of options:

1) Make our pilot now from finals footage, have it looked at and book ourselves the time we want for next year in advance. This would mean that we couldn't use it next year and would have to make all episodes then.

2) Make a 'Season Preview' show early next year that could then be used as our first episode.

What does everyone think? I'd like to get started on some things now just so we have the peace of mind that it will actually get done and people will be there to do it. I think we also need to get our pilot in as early as possible so that we get the times we want for the show.

It might also be good to make two test shows: one 30 minute talk show and one hour-long edited game with discussion etc, so that we can decide which one we want to pursue.

We should also start sourcing sponsors as soon as possible. Liam, I will get back to your email sometime this week. We would love to have your help.

K.

Just my thoughts on the easiest way around how to make the pilot and thus use it as your first episode.

Rather than doing a pre-season show so early, not knowing who will have which players.

I think it would be a great idea to have the first show next year (thus being the pilot) as a review of this years nationals. In saying that means some people would need to head over to Melb (Geelong) in a months time to get coverage, interviews etc etc. Considering there are 2 SA teams involved also.

This also gives you plenty of time to edit and get the final pilot how you want it before submitting it.

Then you could aim for your start date to be 2 weeks prior to next season tip off. Week 1 being the pilot (Nationals Review) and Week 2 (still one week from tip off) being a league/pre-season pre-view)

Week 3 of the program would then cover week 1 of the season.

Just an idea. And if you need any help in Geelong, I'll be there.

Cheers, DJ

PS an alternative would be to have the first show as a on the road with the 2 teams that go to Geelong for the Nationals. Whilst this probably wouldnt portray the format of the normal show it would be kinda cool having it focused on the 2 SA teams and hey you never know who will win? :-)

Reply #1376 | Report this post

yogee

Whilst DJ's idea has merit, I just dont think the logistics, and added expense of an "on the road show" would help.

Also, I think the pilot will need to be along the format of what the show will be for the "season", to give Ch31 an idea.

I personally think if both show formats can be put together, it might also highlight how dedicated people are to the project to Ch31, therefore giving the project better legs.

As always K, feel free to let me know if you want my help at all.

OK people,

Now that ABL season is over and some of us possibly have more time, I'd like to propose a meeting to formulate a plan and get things moving with this TV show.

We need to go through some of Liam Flynn's sponsorship ideas, work out what we'll do for the pilot episode and write a quick proposal for BASA to make sure we get the OK from them.

We'll probably need a couple of hours to get all of that sorted out. If you want to help (once again, no experience necessary), have ideas to contribute or just want to tag along to the meeting, EVERYONE is welcome.

We'll need to figure out a time and place, so post your availability below or email me ([email protected]) with the days and times you're free, plus offer some venue suggestions.

I'm thinking sometime around late August, so a couple of weeks from now.

I'm usually available Monday mornings, Tuesday afternoons, Thursdays, Wednesday nights, some Saturdays and Sunday mornings.

Anybody know what is happening with this post and or the channel itself?
