Two new guys at the CoE from QLD

Will Magnay and Tom Fullarton have both made the move to Canberra, invited into the Centre of Excellence program for 2015.

Will Magnay
Age: 17
Year: 12
Home Association: Northside Wizards
Height: 203cm
Armspan: 212cm
Leonard King: "It's so pleasing to have seen his growth as a player.
Rarely do coaches have the opportunity to see the rewards from the work they put in, until much later down the track.
In Will’s case it has happened right before our eyes, and it’s a thrill to see his progression happen so quickly."

Tom Fullarton

Age: 16
Year: 11
Home Association: Suncoast Clippers
Height: 197cm
Armspan: 201cm
Leonard King: “A lot of coaches try to pigeon-hole players into a specific position, but Tom is one of those
players that I classify as an 'H’ - he’s a Hybrid. He can play point guard, shooting guard or be a swing man.
And his passion for the game allows him to defend bigger players as well.
These are great attributes for any player to have, and Tom has a very bright future.”

QUEENSLANDERS PICK UP CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

Two of Queensland’s brightest young stars have gotten their year off to a brilliant start, receiving coveted scholarships to the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Will Magnay (Northside Wizards) and Tom Fullarton (Suncoast Clippers) have both made the move to Canberra, after being identified by national selectors and invited into the Centre of Excellence program for 2015.
Basketball Queensland High Performance Director Leonard King says he was thrilled with the 16 year olds’ selection into the national program.
“It’s absolutely amazing. Tom has made great progress in the last two years in our National Performance Program and it’s fantastic to see him take the next step and be nationally identified. Will has had tremendous growth in the past eight months and he’s become a real mover and shaker in both the state and nationally.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled for the boys and their families.”
Both Will and Tom were both selected into the National Performance Program for 2015, but have had to resign following their selection to the Centre of Excellence. They’ve now taken up residence at the Australian Institute of Sport and now both attend University of Canberra Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra – the same school attended by a number of high profile basketballers including NBA athletes Andrew Bogut, Dante Exam, Joe Ingles and Patty Mills. Will and Tom will take to the court at the Australian Under 18 Junior Championships in April in a bid to seek a gold medal for the Queensland South state team.

Good luck to the boys, I expect we could see Tom playing at Nationals in a couple of months?

Strange... both good players but there are so many better in that age group that seem to have been overlooked.

It really is a poor age group. Compared to some of the ones we've had recently

Is J Hunter at COE?

Agree with other players overlooked, but should be spots up for grabs when players head off to USA.

There may be more to be announced for 2015 I just found the attached article and it was Queensland centric. so just those two players..

It would be good if BA could actually update their site with details for the CoE and do a media release as it was the impression that the new CEO's was looking to be really good at engaging with the public (new & old) media...

Bear - Magnay will be there too, he is an U/18 (he must have turned 17 earlier this year).

Thanks anon, so are they both QLD North, or South? Are these boys going to be in the same side as Froling and McDowell-White at Nationals?

They are both South kids playing against Froling & McD-W at nats.

Also keep an eye out for a late bloomer in the North team - Ethan Betts

Thanks, I will be keen to see how QLD goes this April, they are usually very well coached. It's always great to see kids get an opportunity to perform and show what they can do at Nationals...

There have been a few girls added to the 2015 group (younger age group)
Mikayla Pirini WA
Ezi Magbegor VIC
Elizabeth Tonks NSW
Jasmine Simmons NSW

There are also a few older players who really should be counted separately so as not to reduce the number of talented juniors
