Shannon Seebohm's rise to WNBL COTY

In a blog post Boti Nagy writes how BA has a massive opportunity to talk up its league MVP for juggling her basketball with being a full time single mum of someone else's child.

While this is a great story, he made no mention of the other remarkable story the WNBL awards luncheon produced.

A young rookie coach of the year. Already impressive. But then look at the road he travelled to get where he is now.

Came from a small country town to the AIS as a player. From AIS to South Dragons NBL. Again impressive. But keep reading.

He then collapses at a shootaround with a teammate and is rushed to hospital. As a result, this promising young talent is told never to play again as it could happen again and be fatal.

A promising young player cut down early. But Shannon did not give up.

He was taken under then-coach Shane Heal's wing and spent time as an assistant for Heal at the Kings.

Then because he was told to, sent out a resume to Sydney when they advertised the head coaching role at the Flames.

Sydney gave the job to Shannon, who told them he didn't think he was ready. They said they wanted to give him a shot anyway (presumably due to Heal getting in their ears).

Takes over the Flames and takes them to the finals and wins coach of the year.

Now that sounds like a story BA should be putting our there.

Not often you have such great publicity material as this from your coach of the year and your league MVP. What a double. Congrats to both and I think BA needs to get their story out there and draw some positive publicity to our great sport.

(Both South Aussies too - even better).

Congrats to him!

He was definitely one of the best stories of the WNBL season for me too.
The players seemed to be behind him 100%, which is a good amount of the battle already won right there. Sharp basketball mind and an excellent demeanour on the sidelines too.
He seems to have a very bright future in coaching.

I agree Shannon has great potential and had a very good rookie season coaching but I feel Chris Lucas was a bit stiff not winning the Coach of the Year award.

All that time sitting next to Heal must have paid off.

All that time next to Heal would have made him realise that even a halfwit can make it as a coach so therefore an intelligent guy like him would be almost a guaranteed success

It's been a spectacular year for the young man, full of achievements in basketball and in life. So happy for him and his partner Jaimee and their new baby daughter!
