Ex-FIBA pres Bob Elphinston to aid NBL

The NBL has received a tremendous boost by enlisting the services of one of the league's originators and outstanding sporting administrators Bob Elphinston.
A week away from major decisions on the futures of Wollongong Hawks and Townsville Crocodiles who both are in voluntary administration, and with a forum in Brisbane tomorrow regarding a 2015-16 future for a Bullets club, Elphinston’s additional advice and assistance is a huge plus for the NBL.

He joins the fight for the league’s future as a past president of the sport’s global governing body FIBA and was one of the men who helped put the NBL together in 1979.

Hooray finally a basketball brain with the runs on the board to help the failing NBL.

Great guy with a huge amount of passion still for the game and a founder of the NBL all those years ago!!

It sounds like his role is as a consultant of some sort? His FIBA experience hopefully gives him insight into modela that have worked in other countries. Good to hear.

On the article itself, I had to grimace at "the NBL [is] the second-longest running league in the country, after the AFL. (Actually, even the AFL only has been around 25 years".

This is the sort of poor journalism of which Boti frequently used to accuse Steve Carfino. The longest running national sporting league, with home/away matches and with a national championship at the end of it, would almost certainly be the Sheffield Shield. That started in 1892 and has been running every year since then. Moreover, it's widely reported in the media and has been for decades, so knowing about it is hard to avoid.

PeterJohn, the first statement is from Elphinston. The second is from Boti and is technically correct.

It's possible that he didn't want to detract from the gist of Elphinston's statement. It's also possible that he didn't consider the Sheffield Shield - I would've forgotten about it too.

Well lets hope Elphinston can help get the NBL on the right track, but he must be a bloody Victorian to claim the AFL existed as a national league before the NBL did. There wasn't even ONE team outside Victoria before 1982!!!

Maybe I'm just a cynic but to me it's just another has-been reminiscing about past glories with no clue about the future. Talk is cheap & resumes don't have much value either.

Yeas FIBA president clearly makes him another dud and has been let alone being involved with basketball across the world for the last 40 years or so.

He's right it was the Pura Milk cup for 9 years and only returned to the Sheffield Shield in 2008.
