Lakers' draft pick to undergo surgery

News from Fanball.com:

THE NEWS

Rookie Ronnie Turiaf, the Lakers' second-round pick, will undergo open-heart surgery to repair an enlarged aortic root and may never play again, the Los Angeles Times reports. The condition, which is often fatal, was detected by team doctors after extensive testing.

OUR VIEW

The best-case scenario for Turiaf is that he may be able to play by this time next season. Considering reports that there was a 75 percent chance he would have had a fatal eruption of his aorta in the next three-to-four years, Turiaf probably has bigger immediate concerns than basketball.

Fred hoiberg has the same condition and has been managing it over the past 2-3 years ... pretty risky stuff though.

I think with Turiaf there was no managing plan involved. Open heart surgery is the only option.

There is a bit of difference between Hoiberg and Turiaf's. Hoiberg conditions was aortic aneurysm and will have to wear a pacemaker whilst Turiaf has a enlarged aortic root (same as Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers, and unfortunately we all know what happened to them).

With Turiaf, if the aortic value needs to be completed replaced he will never play basketball again, if they can repair it then he's out for a season.
