Aus U17 Men’s first training camp

Any feedback on how this camp went?

They are meant to choose 16 (down from the 24) for the next camp prior to qualifiers in NZ.

All I have found is a photo from jschueller15 twitter/instagram showing the whole squad of 24
https://instagram.com/p/38O6q1xyr0/

back row (? = unsure if named right, rough heights);
Froling 205
Majok
Dalton 205
Runnells 204 (see article)
Johns 196
?Bines 192
Colina 208
Fakira 203
?Gregg 196 (as of may 2013)
Starr 197
Hepburn

Front row (? = unsure if named right, rough heights);
?
Dent
?Armstrong
?
Mudronja
Lutula
Fullerton 199
O'carroll 195
Elkaz 195
?Matthews-hampton
Garang 195
Mills
?

Can anyone fill in the missing names (?) and add heights, etc

It looks like the beginnings of a very good team, good height and skills in a lot of positions. This team will be following two straight silver medals 2012/14.

found a good article on Runnells

The fact that the U-19 team can't field a full-strength team due to a variety of other commitments doesn't bode well for the future.

Curtley, I don't really agree. It just opens up more depth and opportunities. Some of the the kids not involved in U19s worlds will develop over the US and come back and play for boomers. Whilst the US kids are absent it opens up a window for others. We need to pumpout more depth now. Focus on that BA!

Yes. Performance in this tournament is only one measure and very dependent on the team around you. The camp is next week, the under 17 coaches are watching most of the games, it's too late for this year, but all will be taken into consideration for the worlds which are next year, you would think.

Seriously. 'Lets hope the selectors have made the right choices' . Folks these guys are profesisonal coaches with networks watching everywhere, always. They are very aware of players on the radar and have been watching this group for a few years now. These nationals would be just one point of reference. A bit of respect please, our national coaches have made a lifetime and career of the game rather than 5 minutes since little Johnny's been playing. I think they know how to identify who's got the goods. Fair dinkum.

The next camp for the 17s will be interesting. The above list for the girls has the 7 under 16/15s included. That's unlikely. How the top age group have developed since 18s will be crucial. Against slightly older, stronger bodies, some of these might not look as impressive. Not going to name names out of respect for their ages, but could be as few as 2-3 in the final 12. At least one big and three guards better in older group.

Traditionally the Auscamp groups were targeted so they were top age in the year of their potential championships. That is why the u17 and19 WC's are on subsequent years, that way all athletes have the opportunity to reach their highest potential at their targeted championship.
This appears to no longer be he case. Very few of the originally targeted group made it to the U19s this year, instead they chose to use COE athletes and move players up from the U17 group. Not saying this is good or bad but IMHO the lack of team bond seemed evident in that group.
The cynic in me tends to think it is largely budget driven. The number of camps seems to have reduced, lead up tournaments have been cut and the program generally contracted.
Federal funding was obviously cut with the lack of perceived success from the men's seniour program. The AIS program was significantly reduced back to the COE which then targeted resources towards the women's senior program, as was obviously warranted due to their success. The ripple effect of these cuts will be felt for years.
The obvious result is the elevation of the US college pathway as the preferred pathway for our best basketballers. Kids moving over there early to maximise their chances in the system and seeing reduced value in coming back for tournaments with teams they have not developed or trained with or feel part of.
What used to be about development is starting to look more like desperately trying to win to justify a return of funding. Just my opinion as an interested bystander!

I chose Abel/Shelley and heal because all 3 can get to the basket, are excellent ft shooters and can distribute. Ok defenders.

Cubillo shoots at a really low percentage and turns the ball over frequently.
Stats can be deceiving. She has been doing ok in vic league of late? Definitely could play over heal.

The other girls in camp are primarily sg's. George, lehmann, satie etc
Simmons and goodchild who I chose are also better suited to the 2.
Once again, get to the basket types... Who are also excellent mid range and ft shooters with a lot of hustle on both ends.

The other g or f spots are really anyone's guess.
Girls that Have been to many camps previously may get the nod.
Mole, McLean, Rowe, bourne. Eventhough they are stronger and more experienced I would still pick some of the younger girls over them even for a loss at the defensive end. Mole and possibly McLean I would take along with Simons and possibly Dangelo.
The ability to shoot at a descent percentage and simply Move the ball or dribble the ball under control through traffic counts for alot.

The post positions are pretty straight forward.
Magbegor and pizzey are the 2 I like. 1-2 more out of Rees, Cochrane and motuga.
Each of the last 3 offer something different.

Just my opinion.
What would you change?

^ 16 have currently been named (its listed above!).

if changes have been made at this stage I would think it would come down to injury replacement or unavailability...

Its all about qualifying against NZ (right now) so changes should be minimal at this stage due to the limited opportunities to get the squad together which has been a symptom of small resources to work with.

After qualifying (hopefully) the squad will expand again and hopefully see the re-establishment of a larger number of camps with a focus on playing games again state league calibre mens teams (as game time in the lead up has sorely been missing).

#653, I think you are off the mark.

First point again (without naming players) is that only 3 bottom age girls are in the 16 going to Canberra on Friday.

From what I saw at nationals that seems pretty right.

The young guards had little impact against quality defence and some looked like they have already reached their ceiling. Others looked like they have A LOT of work to do to play at u17 worlds level.

Similarly one of the SA girls with a big reputation is now small and slow footed - scores heavily against weak opposition but looks like her time may have passed.

I've seen a list with 16 names on it and some that are listed as locks (based on performance at under 16s) are not on it.

When heights, positions and y.o.b are all wrong probably best you don't name children publicly.

23 named in larger squad with FIBA

16 invited to camp that is on this Friday at the COE.

Why do they name 23 in the squad if they only want to work with 16 is this how it's always done what happens to the players named in the squad who don't go to the camp

099, as anonymous pointed out, most of the players in this squad are bottom age 18s, so you couldn't have seen them at U16 Nationals anyway.

I'm not really sure what you're on about.

some players have been picked up to attend these camps from school nationals as well, especially those who missed state and nationals for whatever reason. scouts also attend local games. we need to trust they pick who they need as well as who is talented to being a balanced team

None. It was a dumb comment by someone with no knowledge of the basketball pathway.

For other fun comments, have a look at the sooky Queenslanders cry foul on facebook where the BA announcement of the team is made. Someone should mention to them that it is an U/17 tournament, not an U/16...

There is only 3 Queensland girls in the whole squad and none of them even went to camp so how do you expect them to be chosen. Goodchild, Heal and Motuga and all are bottom age. Their chance will come in time.

Even though Cochrane is a forward/guard, everyone keeps playing her as a centre so she will play there with Ezi I'm guessing. Tallest and youngest in the team, will be 14 still when they play.

Magbegor is 6'4 193cm.

Imo cochrane will play pf. She can at least shoot the mid range. Magbegor can't just yet. The other centre will most likely be pizzey who backed up magbegor at u18s or batish who is a solid defender but has a lot less length.
All the other positions are pretty straightforward. George will probably play pg on occasion.

Yeah well if BA hurried up and announced it this would eliminate these issues. Here you have kids making their first Australian team, they're super excited and can't celebrate it loud and proud but because Jane Aubrey hasn't pulled her finger out and posted it they have to keep quiet. Boys were told midday Monday. It's not fair on them to wait this long. Shame on BA
