Lightning sign Leilani Mitchell

For a basketball club that was on the bones of its backside less than two months ago, Adelaide Lightning have bounced back in no uncertain terms.

Today announcing Leilani Mitchell as the club's No.1 signing for the 2015-16 WNBL season, Adelaide officials rightly could be forgiven for giving themselves an extended pat on the back.

Mitchell, 30, has been the WNBL’s premier point guard of the past two seasons, winning All Star Five selection in her 2013-14 debut with Dandenong Rangers and last season leading Sydney Uni Flames to the preliminary final.

The MAC Adelaide Lightning is excited to announce the key signing of Leilani Mitchell for the 2015-16 season.

Mitchell is the first player to be announced in the new Adelaide Lightning team and Head Coach Tracy York is thrilled to secure such a strong on court leader.

"Leilani has a proven track record in the WNBA and has become a key player in our national team. To have a player of Leilani's calibre is invaluable. She’s experienced at playing at the highest levels and will bring that leadership into our new team" said York.

Basketball SA CEO Mark Hubbard noted that it’s a really important year for the Lightning as the team rebuilds its connection with the South Australian community.

“When giving consideration to the new team list it’s been a focus of ours to ensure that we not only have good players, but also good people that will embrace a positive culture and style of play. We’ve heard nothing but good things about Leilani and we think she’ll quickly get the attention and support of our community” said Mr Hubbard.

Mitchell has played 7 seasons in the WNBA; two seasons in the WNBL and represented Australia with the Opals in 2014.

Currently Mitchell is enjoying another season in the WNBA playing for the Phoenix Mercury, after previously playing six seasons with the New York Liberty.

In 2014 Mitchell played in the Opals winning the bronze medal at the World Championships; whilst last season Mitchell made the WNBL All Star Five after averaging 12.4 pts per game for the season and leading the league with an average of 5.6 assists.
