Boomers risk vs reward for NBA players

After watching Dante Exum go down in a game that does not matter at all it begs the question..... is the risk out weighing the reward for guys making huge dollars in Europe and the NBA. Put the pride aside and ask is jumping through the Boomers program hoops worth it?
We are moving into an Era of Boomers teams that made up of primarily guys who play in the NBA and Europe. Vastly different than years previous when almost the whole team came from the NBL. These guys now are making bigger pay checks and playing in longer seasons (almost triple the length of an old NBL season) at a much higher level of physicality than in the past.
Asking these guys to go to week long camps then go on 2 week long exhibition tours to prep for a series back home seems excessive....these guys are Pros....Patty Mills not being included in the Melbourne series bc he didn't want to go to Europe is crazy....He is the countries BEST scoring guard.
Boomers need to update their approach ans mind set towards our new young stars....this is not the good old days and we asking players to risk alot. It's like getting hurt volunteering and not being able to do your real job although the people you volunteer for make you feel like it's your job.....

NBA players who want to represent the USA go through various camps.

These guys risk injury leaving their house, at regular trainings, etc. The main difference is that injuries in non-professional play standout because they're very public.

We just have to get used to some players sitting out international series at their choice or that of their club. So be it.

Lemanis is already resting players in these Euro games. I doubt he's whipping guys at training who would be coming off fairly full seasons.

Team USA does not have a full time coach who dedicates 100% of his time to coaching team USA, therefore they conduct camps and tryouts also more to the point the USA could have 3 teams all good enough to medal so there is an actual choice of players.....We don't have that although from the production we put on you would think we do.
It's a little much I think to ask these guys to do all this at the end of the day these guys are Pros and shouldn't need 4 weeks to pick up an offense and learn team concepts. Resting guys to me would have been saying Mills Bogut Delly Exum don't do Europe we will have a short camp before NZ series we will see you there.....take a young team to Europe and continue the development process.

And if these players aren't playing and training with their National team they would still be training and scrimmaging away from their NBA club and could still get injured.

NBA execs may put big money into their players, but they can't wrap them up in bubble wrap and hide them from the world for six months of the year.

NBA players will play basketball in one form or another year- round. The upside to an NBA player playing for the national team is atleast they are playing in competitions where there are official rules, regulations and medical staff on hand. You might not get that if you decide to play some games at the local courts.

As for an NBA players commitment to the national team, it is up to them whether they want to take on the commitment. Sure, don't completely flog those guys in training, but I don't think a 4 game Euro trip is asking too much of these guys.

In Pattys situation, he should have always been allowed to come later on.

I think the issue is these nothing games for a warm up... They mean zero, and as a result the players go in half hearted. It seems like players get more injuries in these games than those that have some meaning for international play

So 1 of Martin, Gibson or greenwood will make the Olympics.

Title should be "risk vs reward for playing basketball at all or any sport in general"

Didn't PG13 snap his leg in a USA scrimmage last year. Injuries can happen at anytime in the off season (hi Boozer) it sucks when its a player you've endeared yourself too. Long term, he'll be fine.

Remember the NBA Lockout a couple of years back....there were countless NBA "stars" playing on gravel tracks with fans sprawled halfway across the courts during play. Gone are the days where players can blame their NBA franchise for not being in a position to participate....the modern excuse is injury or worse, fatigue!

yaddah yaddah - this comes up every time there's an injury at an international.

That's forgetting the countless, and far more proportional number of injuries sustained by the high-earners during (gasp) actual.NBA.games

Bogut, Mills, KD, PG, Kobe, Rose, Leonard, Howard, Wade ...

Shit happens where ever you play and what ever sport.

Injury can happen everywhere. I think the NBA needs to buy each player a big bubble to live in during the off season.

Plus how many times do you hear of players sustaining injuries just at practice, it's the nature of the beast.....it happens and usually at the worst time too

Pretty sure you'd have more to complain about if the team only came together a couple of days before a qualifying game or an Olympics etc. with 0 practice time together don't think they'd get very far

Dante will be fine.

The potential risk is for players at Dellys level. His contract was only sorted out a day or 2 before the European camp started. If he was unsigned and did that injury, it's likely he wouldn't have been signed and wouldn't get back to the nba.

Same with Motum. He had the partially guaranteed jazz deal on the table and took the Lithuania offer. If he did that injury before making a decision he would be back in the nbl after a years rehab and a lot lighter in the pocket.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11305215/adam-silver-says-nba-discuss-merits-stars-playing-international-tournaments

Cuban told ESPN.com on Saturday: "The [International Olympic Committee] is playing the NBA. The IOC is an organization that has been rife with corruption, to the point where a member was accused of trying to fix an Olympic event in Salt Lake. The IOC [pulls in] billions of dollars. They make a killing and make Tony Soprano look like a saint. The pros in multiple sports are smart enough to not play when they are eligible free agents. But teams take on huge financial risk so that the IOC committee members can line their pockets. The greatest trick ever played was the IOC convincing the world that the Olympics were about patriotism and national pride instead of money. The players and owners should get together and create our own World Cup of Basketball."

Then on Sunday, after Silver's statement, Cuban followed up with this tweet:

When considering FIBA/Olympic events ask who gets paid. Players=No. NBA=No FIBA/IOC=YES. Ask the people making money of us what they think

- Mark Cuban (@mcuban) August 4, 2014

I like the idea of making the Olypmics an under 23 event (like soccer). Australia are stronger at that age level and making the World Cup the biggest event with senior players.
