Ekene Ibekwe Released By United

"CTI Melbourne United today announced that it had mutually agreed to release import Ekene Ibekwe on compassionate terms.

Ibekwe and his partner are expecting their first child and after much discussion, Melbourne United have given him their full blessing to return to Europe to be with his partner through the pregnancy.

Melbourne United CEO Vince Crivelli gave his best wishes to Ibekwe.

"Ekene has been a valued part of our team since his arrival but the difficulty he is going through with being away from his partner during the most important time of their lives means it's better for both parties if we put family before basketball," Crivelli said.

“We have been working through this for the last few weeks, and I congratulate and thank Ekene for his professionalism and honesty as we dealt with it, along with his contribution to the playing group”.

Ekene Ibkewe thanked the Club for their understanding.

“I’ve enjoyed my time with Melbourne, and I will miss the guys that I’ve got to know while we’ve been together. However family does come first, and I couldn’t give my total commitment to the team when I needed to be supporting my partner.”

CTI Melbourne United are expected to make an announcement on a replacement in the next week."

Wow big blow for United, especially so late in the offseason/ close to the season start. Wonder who will replace him? Who do you guys think will replace him?
Maybe DQ, he's the only person I can think of.

That being said wish all the best for Ibekwe and his soon to be new born child!

Gotta be Ennis, no way he was mutually released based on a child birth. He is a professional athlete, shit happens, you wouldn't just mutually agree to quit any other job when your partner becomes pregnant. C'mon now, people aren't that stupid, call it what it really is. United obviously have some big things coming or they'd be absolutely furious at the late notice of a key import wanting out... guess it looks better on paper for his next gig.

Ibekwe has never hung around anywhere for long. Many very short stints- more so than your average import. I wonder if there's a reason?

Hakim Warrick- it's been a few years since NBA, he's 33 and the NBL is stronger now than ever, so I'm not seduced by his record. How did he go the past 2 years in China and Turkey? That's the important question

I don't really care if Melbourne United have replaced a rim protecting, inside target and quality rebounder with another Sam Young type (spend a career hardly touching the ball and then get here and try taking on all 5 opponents on a single possession) then they don't need him.

If this was legit then they should have tried for a Mickell Gladness or Mike Dunigan type but if he is legit and serious and Holt, Bubbles and Vinnie can handle less touches then United are going to be seriously difficult opponents.

It's potential news like this that makes me wanna scream... "Can we please have 48 minute games"

Exactly. Warrick won't make United any better.

Ibekewe was the perfect fit for that team.

United's situation (just as it was last year) could be best described as cleaning a car, except United only wash the outside and don't vac the inside.

The result is a very nice and flashy looking car from the outside but an absolute nightmare when you drill down to the interior.

United will once again have a bunch of guys who are scorers and want the ball - Goulding, Holt, Barlow, Blanchfield, Barlow, Kickert, Warrick.

But who's going to do the other little things..whose going to man up and get a vac and clean the inside of the car and do the dirty work.

Warrick is not similar to sam young at all. Young was a defensive specialist warrick has a rep of being a poor defender but was a very good scorer at nba level however not in a ball hog type of way he was the type of big who excelled playing off playmaker guards especially diving down the lane in pick and roll situations. Think a poor man's amare stoudemire. However athleticism was a big part of his game at 33 years old that may have deteriorated? Nbl is a relatively unathletic league so even if that is the case i still expect him to be a handy import but not mvp calibre or anything like that. So calm down u guys re writing your top 4

How do you think Journalism works? Journalists just watch over things and report when a story emerges. Sometimes a story comes from interviews and inside information, other times it comes from just watching the movements and talk of the townsfolk.

Good journalism comes from hopefully getting a scoop. Not writing an exclusive based on rumour, tweets and innuendo.
The journos I know seek out the truth and report on things they glean from their own sources that are close to the action.
The interwebie's we now see are a poor mans version. Most of them self promote on here.

I hate Andy Maher on S.E.N. Morning Glory, this bloke is an absolute knob and I feel sorry for Andrew Gaze at times for putting up with this idiot's ignorance of basketball in particular!

Gaze tried to mention this NBL announcement in this morning's show, Maher just gives him the nose in the air treatment and says to him, 'move on'.

To Andy Maher I would say, mate, there is more to sport than your little inbred game of AFL footy and the solo sport of golf.

Have a look around you knob-head and you might see that world games in team sport exist and basketball is one of them!

This kind of thing is all too common. I was watching an interview between Patty Mills and some sports journo on some news channel which escapes me. The guy spent about 60 seconds on the most banal basketball conversation imaginable, and then was like "so what do you think of Jarrad Hayne? and which footy game do you like this weekend?"

This was just after the TV deal was announced, and Patty, as ambassador, would have had some things of interest to say. Any journo worth his salt would have probed the issue - but no. "So what did you think of Richmonds game against ........" ... "Oh, I dont tend to get a chance to watch the footy over in the US so much."

And then there was the interview between Peter Switzer and Larry Kestleman on Switzer Daily. "So what went wrong with the NBL?" - A great way to start a positive conversation. Larry was on the backfoot for the rest of the interview. They either want to present basketball as a "basket-case" (their favourite go-to term) or they want to quickly gloss over it and move back on to football.

But I guess the NBL needs to earn the sporting world's respect.

Reply #550698 | Report this post

I think the NBL rightly has to earn its spot in the sporting hearts of all Aussies, like the soccer did a decade ago, now it gains plenty of traction in the local media.

Ignorance and just being plainly and out rightly rude like some cock of a journo that is Maher is just uncalled for and down right poor form by him.

Not to mention, he is disrespecting a sporting icon of this land in Gaze who has held the flag during an Olympic opening ceremony, no less, for pet's sake!

Maher is a disrespectful imbecile of a man and shouldn't be in SEN radio if he can't open his mind to other sports I reckon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
